Best strategy and/or role play game???

Since I'm stuck here for several more weeks with this damned cast on my leg, I figure I'll scrounge up a couple bucks and buy me a good game to play. I've played Alpha Centauri, Diablo, Age of Empires: the Conquerors, Sim Earth, etc., and what I really like are science fiction strategy games. Alpha Centauri was pretty good. I don't much care for real-world war games, although I might be open to something really up to date.

Help me out here, folks. I'm being slowly bored to death ( except for NS General, of course! ). :D

None better.

Some dice, some paper, some friends (real ones, not pixels), some Mountain Dew, a Ramones mix-tape, a three day weekend, and you've obtained Nirvana.

Masters of Orion is pretty good... Spaceward Ho is a fun little game. Everquest and City of Heroes is also a good choice.
Evil Genus... I've heard good things about.

If you want a good sci-fi strategy game give Nexus: The Jupiter Incidient a try. Really big space ships pounding each other into snail snot.

its much more fun with cream soda, or at least when i play. also, and friends arent required, but real people are. makes it more fun if you dont have problems with killing them.

and if Sci Fi is what you want, theres Paranoia... (the computer is your friend, the computer is crazy, the computer wants you to be happy... this will drive you crazy.) Cyberpunk... (think BladeRunner) and various others like Warhammer, Bloodbowl, Gamma World...

Cream soda? What are you talking about? I think it's somewhere in the rulebook itself that you have to drink Mountain Dew.

eh... lemme try and think of good sci-fi RTS games.

okies, this is what I have so far. Most available on budget, but still incredibly high quality.

Earth 2150: mecha, tanks, plasma, and utter fantasticness. This game rules.

Homeworld 1: Very similar to homeworld 2, but just a little bit less so in each way.

Homeworld 2: The best, in my opinion, space based strategy there is. Scale is a little lacking, but nothing major. Several mods sort that problem out at the expense of masses of processor power.

Ground control: Aside from one or two weapons (lightning tanks?) this game is actually pretty real-word, but with a sci-fi backdrop. At least what I played of it. A very good mix of both, in my opinion.

Imperium Galactica 2: Classic galactic conquest RTS game, features ground combat and space combat. Isn't all that sophisticated beyond that. Hundreds of technologies, a lot of "rushing".

Haegemonia: Imperium galactica done better. Very constrictive unit cap, butit plays better for it. Seeing 8 capships just pummel each other in this is... wonderful!

Total annihilation: Really really old, but the best game ever. Especially the krogoth, but you need to download a few expansion packs for that thing. Top down sci-fi greatness.

need any more?

I use to play AD&D many years ago and loved it, but I don't have the books anymore ( and besides, they've changed radically ), I don't have many offline friends besides my family and they're all busy and don't care for AD&D at ALL, I hate Mountain Dew, I'm not familiar with the Ramones, I'm pretty much stuck here at home now, and cost is problematic. Sigh. :(

Hey, Jordaxia have you tried Nexus: The Jupiter Incident?

The first mission. I would have been more impressed if I was able to relax with it and learn the controls. For some reason, playtesting a game at a friends and buying and playing it yourself are entirely different. I didn't even like ROME the first time I got a shot of it at a friends. Thankfully I learned differently when I bought it regardless.

The version I played was many years ago and had no conflict, just trying to get your species to the "flying cities" stage. Fun a few times, but then just kinda "yawn." :(

RTS: Starcraft
TBS: Civilization(any are good, but Civ 3 was best imo)
Alpha centauri gave me some good fun as well.

Roleplay? Well, there are plenty of good ones. Go through the classics, like chrono trigger and the final fantasy's. Lufia's, Lunars, and the Suikoden series are all good. Its hard to go wrong with rpg's for the most part.

I agree with the Morrowind part, it's the best game in the world! I'm looking forward to Oblivion! Have you tried Anarchy Online? Then you won't feel so alone, and it's completely free! ;) (Send me a message if you do, then we can meet!)

C&C Tiberian Sun is a wonderful RTS. What's so special about it is that almost everyone who plays it either hate it with a passion or really love it. Myself I think it's one of the best games I have played.

About RPGs:

Baldur's Gate I & II are great, not to mention long. Many hours of great gaming there.
Nox is a nice RPG that seems to be pretty unknown. It starts rather unusual; the main character is at home watching TV when a weird portal suddenly appears and he (and his TV) is sucked into a mideval parallel dimension. Then

My favourite RPG is SW: Knights of the Old Republic, although having said that I don't actually like any others. I hate dungeons and dragons rubbish; magical nonsense and the like just ticks me off for some reason. Ironically, I'm a big fan of sci-fi, which is basically magical nonsense with maths thrown in. I also hate maths. So really there's no reason for me to like sci-fi either, but I do. Anyway.

My favourite strategy game is Rise of Nations, with its expansion pack if you can. That is, IMO, the best strategy game out there at the moment. Homeworld is a very good sci-fi strategy game. Empire Earth's expansion pack has a space element to it, but frankly, it's crap. Best sticking with the standard land-based Empire Earth.

Well, I know you said you didn't like real world war games but, ASL (Advanced Squad Leader) is the best!!! Once you slog through the hundred page, small print, 8 by 11 rulebook you enter a world of squad level combat simulation unparalled!!
The Finns are the best, constant leader generation, high break values and good firepower.

ASL is great. For individual soldier combat simulation, the Phoenix Command Combat System (and all of its extensions). Too bad it's out of print...

I and a friend used to play all the time, my greatest accomplishment against him was a string of four victories using the Italians against the Russian twice and Gremans twice. Three times attacking and once defending with Italians and still winning!!
Oh I gloated my friend, GLOATED!!!! We get so few moments of pure triumph in life.
