The reason is the law doesnt care about feelings. When you marry, your legal custody gets trasfered to your spouse (lets say for instance that you have had a falling out with your parents) since your spose is closest to you. Otherwise, people's parents whom they had not spoken to for years would be making life or death decisions for them. Even if she never wanted it, her husband could still remove the tube, unless she had a living will.

Feelings nothing. It is a long established legal standard that the spouse of a married person receives power of attorney. It was his decision to make legally, even though I dont agree with it morally, and the parents had no claim at all.

so the husband has claim to her life? does this mean that my life partner would be able to pull the plug on me if i dont leave a living will?

That's why you don't get married. Humans were never meant to be in such stifling relationships. Humans are meant to be free, being with whom they wish whenever. When marriages don't work, which is 70% of the time, all that's left is pain, sorrow and deprivation. In this case, deprivation of life.

Having said that, don't even DARE look at my country.
