Actually know a girl with a eating disorder, she comes from a really screwed up household.
She cant keep a job down, she looks fucked up naked, like old, her skin is saggy, its really weird. Her teeth are sorta going rotten.
The thing is she would be pretty if not for the puking and the crash diets and the purging.
IMO though, if she didnt have a eating disorder she would have other problems, the girl is weird, really weird.
In any event, your opinions on eating disorders?
Think its BS?
Think its caused by media?
Personally it really weirds me out as I could personally give a flying shit what someone else thinks when they look at me. Besides, I am big and handsome
I think it's caused by the media. I could never turn down food, I don't know what's wrong with these people.

India and other countries have almost no eating disorders. However, the Americanized parts do. It's mostly our media and unrealistic expectations of beauty.

Modesty is for losers. I'm the most beautiful woman in the world!

prove it.... ;)
I dunno...I know some people who have eating disorders and they say that if they didnt do that, they might do something else like cutting or drugs. Its sad whatever the cause. Girls(or boys) who are extremely beautiful, yet never see themselves that way in the mirror. sadness

The media influenced eating disorders are just a symptom of the underlying issues. Many girls with eating disorders have been molested. Some have organic brain disorders.

My best friend had an eating disorder for several years, and probably still struggles with issues of body image and self-esteem. But she was, and is a brilliant, high-achieving, beautiful girl from a comparitivley normal white middle-class family. Often girls that are very inteligent perfectionists feel the need to have this control, with trajic results.

In any event, your opinions on eating disorders?
I think they're mental afflictions caused by any number of conflicting social factors and the afflicted need serious psychiatric attention.

I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the media and the urealistic expectations of beauty. So many young girls have fallen into the eating disorder trap - just to look like the stars. It's really sad.
Really?! Are you single?
Single but not available.

I hear the current research theme in eating disorder aetiology is the loss of control in the patient's life...like, if you feel disempoweed in your life, pushed inot things you might not want, like studies and career paths, your coping mechanism might be to attempt to control your appearance/weight by any means possible. Thus, binging, purging, laxatives, starvation become options for you to achieve greater control of your body's physical need for food.
Pictures of skinny chicks might inspire the dietary change, but I think it's a little blinkered to attribute the cause of eating disorders to them.

She should go for surgery. I heard there's some really good techniques, where they put something in the lining of your stomach, and you don't get hungry often.
COuld be a psychological problem.. Or like me, just farking lazy.

I think this makes a lot of sense. I have known two girls who died from eating disorders. It's a terrible disease. :(

As I said, I don't think this is the only cause, but I really think they don't help. The increase in eating disorders in boys might be a sign of that - boys are targeted almost as much as girls by the beauty industries now. :(

The media certainly has a significant influence. A study was done in Fiji, I can't remember when, in a village with no western media, where larger women are considered more sexy. However, as soon as a TV was introduced, several cases of anorexia popped up. Coincidence? I think not.
