What are people's opinions on how well represented non-western cultures are represented within Western music, literature, film etc.?
Just one of my favourite facts to show how culturally centrist Britain unfortunately is: the genre 'world music' accounts for 93% of all music made, and 70% of all music recorded, within the world but only 2% of British music retail. Pourquoi?
Certainly great strides have been made within slightly more impersonal media forms, e.g. literature- authors such as Arundhati Roy, Zorah Agdashvili, Monica Ali, Kazuo Ishiguro at various times joining the ranks of popular authors within the west- but I still sometimes feel that western consumers are still unable, or unwilling, to appreciate media from other cultures that is more definitely 'other', e.g. in music and film the lack of success of artists and directors who record in languages other than English, or using non-western musical idioms, instruments or dramatic themes. What is everyone's opinions?
