I understand the way people in Iceland are named is different from anywhere else. Something to do with the last name of a childs father being the first name of their son or daughter, but with the added suffix of 'dotir' or something to that effect. Can you explain that?

Also, is it true that the entire populace (280k?) is supported by geothermal energy?

Yeah, it's true. Almost everyone's name ends with -son (son) or -dóttir (daughter). Occasionally you see people use family names (like they do in most other places), but they usually put them before the traditional ending (son or dóttir), those people are usually of danish descent.
I really don't know why it is like that, but I don't find it any better or worse than using family names. I think it's what people did in ancient Norway and we kept the custom as we did the language.

Iceland is entirely supported by geothermal energy for heating.
Because of this, the hot tapwater in the south of iceland smells a bit funny (a hint of sulphur), but you stop noticing after a while.

The electricity comes from dams and waterfalls.

Thats an incredible investment in environmental sustainability! In particular when you consider that most of Iceland's natural landscape was plucked bare of trees and such by Vikings. That is, if I'm remembering correctly - from what I understood, the country is almost entirely barren. Is that true as well?

What about taxes?

Taxes are high.
It's very hard to explain since I don't know the beurocracy terms in english, but income tax is 38,54% (but you get a few months where you don't have to pay taxes if you are starting on your first job or haven't worked for a long time...It's called "discount").
Also import taxes are pretty because of the distances.

I think corporation income taxes are around 18%.

Some people say tax-evasion is the national sport of Iceland as many people work "in the dark" (unregistered) if they are working on part-time jobs...etc.

The extended family has names, though nobody uses them. Usually people can tell you that they are from the "blood-line of so and so". The name of the larger family is usually associated with it's place of origin (often farms or tiny villages, some of which don't exist anymore) or the first member of the family to settle in Iceland, build a farm or settle in a certain area ...etc.
I know that I am of the blood-line of "járngerðarstaðir" and I know it used to be a farm somewhere in the south and it was founded by a woman named "Járngerður" . But it's pretty meaningless to me since it links me to half the population in some places.

In the BBC televsion series Dr. Who, it is made quite clear that in the 51st century, Iceland will become the dominant world power through conquest under the leadership of the war criminal Magnus Greel.

It is only after the deaths of Billions does the Phillipine Alliance, finally crush the fascist regime of Greel and his Icelandic cohorts.

What, if any, measures are the Icelanders of today taking to prevent this tragic future?

Historians disagree on this. There are records that say Iceland was full of forest "between mountain and beach", but many people doubt this. It was probably true for certain areas, but not for the whole land.
Most of iceland is tundra and the south is mostly lava fields, but there are some forests and quite many trees.
The forests we have are usually very young and therefore not tall but sometimes cover alot of land. The joke goes: "If you ever get lost in an Icelandic forest: Stand up".

back to iceland...
what is the food like?

The food is alot like european food. Iceland doesn't have much tradition when it comes to food. The harsh winters made it so that food was rather prepared so that it could be stored for a long time and preserved, rather than for taste. It also means that people ate every bit of the animal.
Once a year we all drink icelandic beer and a schnaps called "brennivín" and eat that stuff. Typically, it's stuff that has been "soured" in milk (which is a process I don't know enough about to describe in detail) such as whale blubber, seal-flippers, sheeps-testicles and other unidentifiable parts of the sheep. Also there are "burned" sheep-heads, smoked meat, many types of dried fish, rotted shark (which has a very sharp taste) and rotted stingray (rotted means that it's buried in sand for months for preservation).

Food unique to iceland and that is still eaten on a daily basis by most is rare, but we eat alot of skyr (which is similar to yoghurt but thicker), haddock (which is a fish that isn't commonly eaten in other countries) and alot of people eat dry fish for snacks.

What I personally like best about the food here is the availability and great selection of all kinds of fresh fish.

Most Icelanders follow the ancient tradition of deriving their last name from the first name of their father (patronymic system). If a man is called Leifur Eiríksson, his proper or given name is Leifur, and his patronymic is Eiríksson (the son of a man named Eiríkur). A woman called Margrét Jónsdóttir has the proper name Margrét and her patronymic is Jónsdóttir, i.e. the daughter of Jón. Women do not change their name after marriage. In a family of four, a couple with a boy and a girl, all four will therefore usually have different last names.

Icelanders address each other by their first name. The last name (patronymic) is never used alone. Icelanders say for example, "the President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson," but never "President Grímsson".

Why did the American fisheries in Washington all but destroy the salmon stocks that make a run around the tip of Vancouver Island? When our Minister of Fisheries cut back the commercial fishing in BC to properly rebuild fish stocks, the fish werent spread out by the fishing - creating a perfect opportunity for American fisheries to slaughter the fish as they rounded the tip of our island into American waters. We can't control other countries non-sustainable resource harvesting methods - not every one is as progressive as Canada sadly. They took advantage of a situation, just like the Albertans are doing with the oil and gas reserves to make you rich Jay, and yes, at the sake of the environment. We Canadians arent perfect either - so we cant point fingers when another country does something backwards. The fish were in international waters when they took them, it was a selfish stupid thing to have decimated the stocks like that - but it happens all the time, and in our own way, we contributed as well.

Thank you.

Like in other places, there are institutes, foundations...etc that study geology, and there is much to see, since we've had quite a few volcano eruptions recently (i witnessed the aftermath of the big one in vatnajökull glacier in 98, the sheer force of it all was overwhelming). Most people have seen the sights and been to some craters when they were in elementary school. But I don't really know if there is much general interest in geology though. The monuments and museums are mostly...well...crap. But the sites themselves are really something. If you ever get the chance, go to the national park of skaftafell, it is in my opinion the most beutiful place in iceland loceted directly beneath vatnajökull glacier. It is very close to the site of the last volcano eruption

Here are some pictures from the 1998 eruption and the floods that followed:

The eruption:

The flood hit alot of bridges and the sands are still littered with twisted metal today. You see the longest bridge in iceland being hit by the flood in this photo:

Actually we canucks are mainly at fault for the west coast salmon crash, because of all the disease the farmed salmon are causing. Whereas on the east coast the government of canada actually did a complete ban on major cod fishing, but foreign nations continued and then did wipe out the cod stock, not us.

As for oil, ever been up in that area in northern alberta? Its basically tundra without the wildlife where they are mining. If i wanted strip mining anywhere it would be up der...

No disagreement there, I think shes rad. I don't think her music was ever really 'mainstream'. Furthermore, since I gave my TV away (thats right, I no longer watch TV) I wouldn't have known anything about it even if she was on there (probably not even if I did have a TV since I never watch MTV anyway). I can't answer that. Nobody knows why the cod has gone away. But I do know that every effort to fish sensibly has been made in here. The quota system is based on estimates made by marine biologists. Some say that the estimates failed to take into account the rising temperetures of the ocean, which kills fish on a massive scale. Some blame imbalance created by fishing one species more than others (and the ban on whaling).

As for the hockey thing: I doubt it. Hockey is not a big sport in here and never has been.

Do you like Múm and Sigur Rós? I think they are brilliant, especially Múm.

No way, Bjork is great!

Nothingness? Her new album Medúlla is excellent and she sang at the Olympics 2004 opening ceremony. Maybe you haven't seen her on MTV because:

1. MTV is all crappy reality TV now.
2. Her new music is not mainstream-sounding enough.

She is definitely not a has-been.

Are you saying that because it's death metal (that is what he's doing right?), or because it's bad death metal?

What's his band called?

I agree. Múm is one of my favorite bands.

But...
Her son's name is Sindri and his band is "dáðadrengir" (I don't know how to translate it, but it's something like "the glory boys") and it's far from death metal. It's a combination of rap-music and electronic bleep. Not that I have anything against that type of music. It's just that their take on it is truly awful. But that's just my opinion, there are plenty of people who seem to like it

The fish stocks on the west coast were decimated to dangerously low levels long before the fish farms (which came from companies started in the east) made a presence here. Furthermore, the reason the Canadian government had to put a complete ban on cod fishing, was a result of mismanagment by Canadian and European fisheries.

The population in the east was also at a dangerously low level before the ban was put in place. This example was the reason the BC minister of fisheries put a temporary ban on fishing here - he didnt want to see us get into the same situation, where the fish population was suceptible to comple destruction.

We were a large part of the original problem in the east, and the Europeans finished it off. We were small part of the original problem in the west, and the Americans dealt us a deathly blow - then, in an ill-fated attempt to reconstruct (after that blow) we invited fish farms over as a 'sustainable alternative'... it didn't work and now things are worse, but beleive me - they were in a bad state of affair long before the fish farms arrived.

As far as strip mining, its not good anywhere. The only purpose it serves is to put money in the pockets of man at the expense of the planet. Alberta has some seriously dangerous environmental policy - not a progressive province at all in that sense.

That hockey thing was from a bad movie.

No the fishing boats were mainly spanish + japs but some icelandic boats were in the mix. Basically most of that fishery is in canuck waters but a small portion juts out into international water and that is where the damage was done.

Does iceland still whale fish?

Whats the capital of Iceland? Reykjavík
How many licks does it take to get to the center of the tootsie pop? Don't know, we don't get those over here.
What is Iceland favorite holiday? Bank Holiday. Or independance day: The 17th of June
Do you celebrate St. Patrick day? No
How many letters are in this post? Loads
If you pee on an electric fence will you get shocked? Yes
What is 42? It is the answer, but we must calculate the question.
When will the world end? When Ragnarök begins...
Whats your sign? cancer? capicorn? Virgo
When do you sleep when it is never night? Between midnight and 8AM
How do you feel about Finland? They're awfully quiet.
Whats the origin of OK? I don't know.
Who is Iceland's patron saint? I don't think we have one
Do you watch TV? Yes
Whats your favorite show? I don't know one
Say the Icelandic Alphabet? A Á B (C) D Ð E É F G H I Í J K L M N O Ó P (Q) R S T U Ú V (W) X Y Ý (Z) Þ Æ Ö
The letters in the brackets are not found in any words, but are sometimes found in names. Z was removed from the icelandic alphabet in 1974 because it's pronounciation and use was identical to the letter S.
Whats the capital of Assyria? I think it's Nineveh
What is Iceland's capital? Again...Reykjavík
Does Iceland have a Nessie? Yes, we call it "lagarfljótsormur" (the worm of lagarfljót river)
Whats your favorite geyser? Grýta, because I like the image of it on the books of matches

There is no commercial whaling. It has been illegal since 1986. A few whales (i think six whales) were killed in 2003 for scientific purposes and it sparked massive international protests and a media frenzy. Although whales in the north atlantic are no longer endangered I don't think allowing commercial whaling would be a smart move for Iceland as it would damage it's image. Most people abroad think we kill whales commercially on a massive scale up here, because of greenpeace's massive propaganda campaign in the 80's.
Greenpeace is hated by the general public. Greenpeace has lately been trying to do something about the image they have here (icelanders think of them as the anti-christ), and last year greenpeace members sent thousands of letters to Icelanders trying to explain how they are not the extremists they used to be (they commited acts of terrorism in the 80's, even sank boats in the harbours)...etc. I received one from a german teenager, I never wrote back.

Wasn't this incident something about a photographer getting a little too close to her son or something?
I can't say I don't understand why she did it...Though there are more polite ways to get people to back off.

Nah, I don't know about that - I think that was her excuse after. But really she was walking out of the terminal, into a small crowd of reporters looking quite shy and demure one minute... the next she was on top of the reporter in a frenzy of flying hair and nail scratching cat fighter craziness. It was pretty wild looking. The reality of the situation, was that she was tired and bitter from being on tour with little or no sleep and heaps of stress - she snapped.
