10,500 prisoners. This is a good thing. However it comes with another problem.

When the US leaves the Iraqi government may let many of these people go free. Many may have joined because they were caught in propaganda to oppose the US and as another thread has stated, they may be looking for an "exit strategy" in order to go home.

The burden on the legal system will be great and the fact that these men may be needed back home by their communities in order to rebuild and support their families, it may persuade the Iraqi government (when -and if - it forms) to let them go if their communities ask so. I believe that there is precedent in letting former militants to go home without prosecution once a conflict has ended, oddly enough to keep the peace.

The question is obvious: Good thing or bad thing? Will any of them join Al-Queda and if so, how many?

It'd be a good thing if they could somehow only release the ones who would go back to their families and work to rebuild Iraq.
It'd be a bad thing otherwise
