My suggestion is "The Big Kahuna". It stars Kevin Spacey and Danny Devito as a couple of industrial lubricant salesmen sent to a convention in Witchita Kansas along with a new employee to win a major client, the big kahuna, for their company. The film deals with issues of friendship, religion, honesty and character. It's a fine movie if you want a serious moral drama with some witty, funny dialog.

"Mars Needs Women" (campy B movie from the 1960s)

"The Hunger" (Susan Sarendon and David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve as vampires)

"Boys of Company C" (really good Vietnam war movie, with some humor)

"Double Indemnity" (classic Film Noir, with Fred McMurray as the bad guy)

"Get Crazy" (oh the early 1980s were fun)(with Lou Reed, Malcom Mcdowell, some good music, lots of sex, drugs and rock and roll)(really funny too)

"Killer Klowns from Outer Space" (with John Vernon of Animal House fame)(too silly to describe, but its pretty amusing though)

To Die (Not to Die) Don't remember the country (Spain?), but an interesting exploration of cause/effect. Sans the technomusic of Run Lola, Run.

Nobody-Personal documentary that you have to watch all the way through. Sherman's March same deal.

Salesman-Isn't really 'obscure' as it is a landmark verte documentary, but if some of the others qualify, then this does. And its a must see (follows door to door bible salesmen in the sixties.)

Begotten.....hehe...okay, so I had a friend who would try and get people who came over to put Icy/Hot on thier arms to see how they would react. Thats about how I view that movie. I just want to see how people react.

Pumpkin-It'll seem stupider and stupider as you go until you realise thats the joke. I now love this movie. Christina Ricci.

Smoke-Again, not totally obscure, but a favorite. Five lives with a tobacco shop at the hub. Written by Paul Auster and directed by Wayne Wang.

Moonrunners--Haha! Good luck. It's the insperation for Dukes of Hazzard-it even has an Uncle Jesse and a hot cousin. Except in this they actually run 'shine. And the cars are for crap. Same guy made both, he himself was a moonrunner in a Chrysler 300E he called 'Trigger' after Lee's horse. I managed to see it on cable, haven't found it on video.

I've seen a disturbing number of those, some I wouldn't consider obscure, though. Open City is practically film text standard, things like that.

It's a great film, so cheap, cheesy & hilarious. Think of Jesus as a Bruce Lee type fighting machine.

My choices are:

Le Circle Rouge: Great French noir gangster movie from the 60s.

Malcolm: A Melbourne film that's set around the city's trams.

Simon Magus For some reason this is impossible to get your hands on (as far as I know), it was on Channel 4 in the wee hours of the morning a few years ago. A British made film about a Jewish village on the point of implosion in 19th Century (could be 18th) Germany. The protagonist (the Simon of the title) is the community scape goat.

Nine Lives of Tomas Catz A German/Brit film, very surreal film about the end of the world. Very funny.

Old Boy Not really obscure, but a recently released Korean film about a man who is locked up for 15 years without being told why and his wife is brutally murdered. He is released on top of a building and given a mobile phone and a wallet of cash and told he has five days to find out why he was locked up.

Cleo from 5 to 7 or some variation thereof. It's the two hour wait to find out if she has cancer or not. I thought that was compelling.

Another that sounded compelling that I didn't get to see was My Life Without Me, remeniscent of My Life with Batman...forgot his name...Mr. Mom....that guy...anyway-woman makes a video of instructions for those she loves after she is gone, including setting her husband up with someone new.

Again, if you're a certain kind of movie goer, this ain't obscure, but since for some sick reason I keep running into people who've never heard of Bullitt...the world we live in today, I'm tellin' ya...anyway...

Vanishing Point--a surrealist car chase movie. No, really. It really is a seminal car chase flick. That and The Driver with Ryan O'Neal who I consider a total bastard for a real stupid reason.

Neither of these are obscure, as you mention - they're just old. Fantastic movies both of them though. Bullit (prior to Ronin) was the only movie to ever have car chases that were 'true' by actually having both cars driving at speed while filming every scene.

If we can mention documentary films, I'd like to include 'One Mans Wilderness - Dick Proneke'(sp?). An amazing documentary filmed by a man who moves into the Alaskan wildreness at the age of fifty with little more than some hand powered tools and a bit of know how, then eeks out an existience on the barest of self provided sustinence and essentials. He lived there for around forty years documenting everything he could - truly an amazing story. If you get the chance - do watch it!

I'm not sure whether the reference to obscure is really refering to content, public/local awareness or production - but I'll list a couple independant or not well known films that really get me.

As far as feature independant films, I know that last years film of unrequited substance for me was 'I heart huckabees'. I'm an existentiallist, so this one really grabbed me. I can't say enough about the sheer brilliance of this film. Its not really that obscure, as it did recive widespread accolade for its talent and its offerings, but it's one of those movies that was never at the front and center of attention - so it deserves a mention if any do.

If its awareness, Ill have to say Jules and Jim. Though the awarness of this film may only be slighted at this time by the fact that it is a rather old movie. Im not sure how well known it was at the time of its release due to the fact that it was made many years prior to me being alive to have known!

Another recent film that rocked me, was 'Cidade de Deus' or 'City of God'. A feature length film based on a true story about the roots of gangs in Brazil. I won't say anything about it, since its really the type of movie you just have to watch to appreciate - but I say without hesitation that anyone with even the slightest inkling of interest in gang movies should be looking for this one right now.

I do really want to see Amelie though, and hope I get the chance soon. If everything I've read and been told is true it ought to be an amazing adventure in storytelling.

God, Koyaanisqasti is old. I saw it about twenty years ago. Dreams isn't really obscure, but I can probably count the number of people I know that saw Koyaanisqasti on one hand.

several of my friends and myself went and saw it, and the sequel .... Philip Glass did the soundtrack for both Koyaanisqasti and Powaqatsi

What a bunch of crap people have been recommending.

Here is one that isnt crap:
Happiness (by Todd Solondtz)

Its the most disturbingly funny movie Ive ever watched. It pushes you to the edge and just before you fall off, it makes you laugh and pulls you back again. Its basicaly a collage of stories about individual members of a family each searching for happiness in their own unique way.

I don't know that Reefer Madness (http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=feature_films&collectionid=reefer_madness1938) can qualify as obscure, but it's one of the few movies you can link to that people can watch legally. Just click on the name in my text.

Additionally-the original The Fast and the Furious (http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=feature_films&collectionid=fast_and_the_furious). Has no resemblance to Point Break...

When they asked for a obscure movie they meant one that most people haven't seen or never heard of. It truely amazes me how most people fail to realize that most of the movies they've named have been heard of. Here are two truely obscure films. "Let's Kill Uncle" and "2000 Maniacs"

Unfortunately - since I started watching Bollywood cinema, I have relocated to the least Bollywood-friendly part of the universe... that being rural Georgia.

So, I haven't seen "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" yet. :(

Obviously, I will have to see it eventually, as I think Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee are amazing. :)

"Labyrinth" is a classic - It has to be one of the greatest movies ever made... kid film, or otherwise. :)

I think the most obscure plot in a movie prize goes to The Brave Staring and directed by J Depp who is I might add one of the finest American actors of all time. This movie however only lives up to it's title by virtue of the fact that brave is what you have to be to watch it. I saw it at a friends house on holiday in Stockholm (starved for English language TV) went to rental thought OOH! Mr Depp got to be good. It was so bad we could not watch it on fast forward. :gundge: :headbang:

Monty Walsh:
Lee Marvin, Jack Palance. It is a beautiful western about the ending of the cowboy heyday. It shows the effect this has on three different men and the women they love. Also has a great opening song by Mama Cass.
