So why does the UN seem intent on downplaying Darfur?

The WHO has stated that only about 70,000 have been killed in Darfur. Now we know why the number seems so low. They only counted those who died violently withing the refugee camps. Those who died when their villages were attacked weren't counted, neither were those who died while fleeing to the refugee camps.

New figures indicate that as many as 300 thousand have been killed. www.4ni.co.uk/nationalnews.asp?id=39007

Is the UN covering up the true scale of the attrocities in order to protect French, Russian, and Chinese business interests?

No, they're covering up the true scale of the atrocities to hide their blazing incompetence. Just like Rwanda, they don't want the world to know just how many people the UN might have been able to save if they had done something in the beginning.

Right-o. They're trying to hide the fact that "Never again" actually means "If we can get around to it, you know, in between the scandals and covering up our corruption."

Are you serioulsy expecting an amalgam of hundreds of nation, all with their own little interest (which are frequently at odds with one another) to be of one mind in a conflict?

Or are you under the delusion that the UN is some kind of government that has ministers and not the meeting place for nations that it actually is?

I know it's an amalgam of hundreds of nations each with their own interests. Maybe I'm just ideological enough to think that some business interests can be set aside to prevent a genocide.

I just checked the CIA World Factbook. Sudan has just recently begun (within past 6yrs) exporting profitable quantities of oil. Perhaps they do not want this revenue cut off... wonder which nations are buying it?

Rwanda is a bad choice to use. The US had a hand in that as well.

China and France are. Russia's just selling Sudan the weapons they use to kill the people in Darfur.

And I share that sentiment but you have to petition your own government to do something about it. Claiming that the UN is doing nothing is blaming a shell that it's not moving because the snail in is not moving it.

I'll make you a deal... Write to your congressman/deputy/representative about it and I'll do the same.

Business as usual. The UN's problem is that there is absolutely no penalties or means of enforcement for corruption, which is endemic. Furthermore, the highest echelons are all corrupt together, so top down reform is impossible.

The secretary general is formally chosen by the General Assembly. But the secretary general must first be nominated by the Security Council and win the consent of all five of its permanent members (Russia, China, France).

Thus, it is impossible to reform the UN because the corrupt totally control how it's organized.

The US and allies can take unilateral action. Coalition of the willing and all that. Let's just destroy all of Sudan's military hardware with airstrikes and ship some small arms off to the people in the refugee camps. Even things up a bit.

Even if you gave the refugees arms, it wouldn't even things up.

Then you would leave the place in civil war.

If you're going to go in, go in and clean house, and set the furniture up straight. Otherwise, it will go on forever.
