Well he played in virtually every position on the pitch in competative games, including 3 games as goalkeeper (keeping 3 clean sheets too) and was a very sportsman like competitor, both on and off the pitch, Plus being one of the best strikers of all time helped too...that and having more skill than God.

While his skill as a fotball player mde him the best ever, his financial dealings off the pitch leave a lot to be desired in terms of spotsmanship. Don't believe the hype, look at the record instead. (It does help if you can read Portuguese though.) What I found in English was this (http://www.rediff.com/sports/2001/dec/20pele.htm)

Given Pelé's reputation here in Brazil, for the Folha de São Paulo to publish anything even mildly critical of him, it would have to have solid proof. His financial dealings have been shown to be less than scrupulous. But, this is a thread about the best fotballer.

I'm giving mine to Maradona for his passion. Not to say that Pele was lacking in this category - but you can't even compare the emotional involvment Maradona had on the field. This guy was playing with 100% heart - there was nothing left of him when he came off, he left it all on the grass.

No, I can't say. Each of these had their own special qualities (and bad qualities as well, unfortunately) but they were all absolute legends, well as much of a legend as one can be from playing a completely pointless sport (which I love, however)...

Cruyff, Pele or Maradona... all different, all brilliant.

Didn't FIFA vote Zidane... That's a shame. I mean He's great, but does he really
stand out like Pele, Maradona or Cruyff? Well Pele is considered to be best by
many. They might be right, very close anyway... I'm so young that I remember
only Maradona. But what I've heard and seen Cruyff really bumbed football to
new level! He was something new creating a player who really didn't have
a position. (He was just attackin player). Like in football today! He didn't
do it by himself (ofcourse) but he was the 'frontman'.

And what i've seen his matches (Classics) He was brilliant!

Definitely Maradona.

Seeing clips of some of the old games, I think Maradona would only be the one that can stand the test of time.

No doubt Pele and others were groundbreaking for their time, and have greatly improved the football world.. But if you probably bring them to todays standards, they'll still be good but not on par with some of the geniuses of today like Zidane Ronaldinho and others. The quality and training kids have nowadays are phenomenal.

My vast knowledge of the futbol has come to let me say, there are three amazing players that deserve the title.
Pele
Kelmes (El Matador) Argentina.

And considering the fact that I have just come back from a trip to Buenos Aires, where I visited the Boca Juniors stadium, as well as the national team training facility. I would have to say Maradona. The man is considered a god in his country. Really, you have no idea, every five minutes, a Maradona clip appears on television.

But I have a question for the rest of you, who is the best current player?
I had a debate with some friends over dinner when I was in Argentina. Personally, I'm caught between Edgar Davids - Netherlands (based on the fact of his amazing ball control), Henry - France (enough said), Ronaldino (with the ~), Ronaldo, and Crespo. SO what's your opinion?

Ronaldinho (with an h not a ~, he's Brazilian not Spanish) is probably the most overrated footballer currently playing.
He has high levels of skill on the ball, but his vision of the game is non existent at the moment. He is too concerned in showing off his talent to do the simple things correctly. His work rate is almost non existent (when did you last hear of him defending?), and the only time he is worth anything is at a dead ball situation close to the opponents penalty area. (The easy bit in other words)

Comparing players across eras is difficult, but you can let the statistics indicate some things. As a pure goal scorer, ther has never been anyone even close to Pele.

anybody see that goal he scored against England where he stole the ball when Banks threw it up to kick it?

the guy had absolutely insane pace and balance....when he was sober. its a great shame he wrecked his career, but he was obscenely talented

(and my dad played with him once when he was a kid growing up near him)

Can you name one club or national team that he couldnt walk straight into the first team of?
Football needs a creative players as well as the players of high work rate, especially when only playing one striker, as Barcelona do.

Right now: Chelsea. ;)

There is no reason why greative players can not also have a high work rate is there? To not have one, and to be given the title best player in the world, is my problemn. He is good, but overrated. Kaká is much better (same level of skills, and a work rate that is measurable)

I reckon he would fit into the Chelsea team, in the place of Cole or Duff, seeing as they play the same formation as Barcelona.

Kaka is hardly a hard working player, he's just stronger, so can tackle when he bothers, and his level of skills is much lower in terms of creativity and vision, although he is a better finisher.

Seeing as nearly all of the candidates for best ever players are strikers and attacking midfielders, it doesn't appear that work rate is important, it just comes down to fitness which can be changed, whereas skill is born. eg Shaun Derry.

He would not fit politically in Chelsea at the moment, would he? I also consider both Duff and Cole to be better players overall then the long haired gaúcho.

I have just watched both of Brazil's world cup qualifiers. (Poor performances by Brazil in both by the way.) This placed Kaká and Ronaldinho on the field together. It was noticable that in both games neither Ronaldinho nor Ronaldo would move at anything faster than a slow stroll whenever a team mate had the ball.
When the opposition had the ball, the non dynamic (almost static) duo would get even slower.
Kaká, Robinho (who came on as a substitute), and the non stop wing backs Cafu and R Carlos were the only players that could be seen to be doing any work in the midfield. Emerson was more a defender in the set up. Kaká is at least as skillful as Ronaldinho, and it is not a matter of strength, but a matter of willingness to work, that makes the difference. And he did make the difference scoring the only legal goal that Brazil scored in the last six hours of playing time. (Emerson's goal against Uruguay was from an offside position.)
There are also at least two players in Barca's team that are, in my opinion better than Ronaldinho.: Eto'o and Deco.

Im pretty sure that Maradona couldn't give a shit about what FIFA thought - he knows he's a genius, and so do the people of his country. I heard it stated here that he is seen as a god, and I read an article stating the same in Sports Illustrated a few years back. Even all these years later, no one can take from Maradona what he brought to his people and his country. He is a living legend - regardless of his vices.

And you officially suck. Two things, Maradona isn't dead, hell, i think not. He just had an operation, and reports are that he is doing great. And secondly, really, how can you hate a person that scored the goal of the century over Britain in the 1986, wait maybe it was 82 but still, in Mexico? Plus, I went to La Boca (the stadium where he played) they show all these goals hes made, wow, that guy is most definitly futbol legend.
