Not feeling great

Neo-Anarchists
30-03-2005, 11:36
I had a terrible dream last night.
In it, I met a girl, and we became fast friends over the space of a week. We grew even closer as the dream went on, and we were beginning to fall in love. Then I learned that she had a terminal disease, the same one that had killed her father. She held a fundraiser to raise money for research, and I helped her.
The next day, she was hospitalized. She died that same day, and I was the only one that saw.
I had to comfort her mother and convince her that whatever had happened to her girl was better than staying in her frail, sick body in this world, but I didn't know if I even believed it myself.

Yes, the dream was oddly long at a month, but I tend to dream like that.

The other thing that disturbed me is that I'm having trouble telling what's real and what's dream. It's like I suddenly have a month's worth of extra memories dumped in my head, instead of remembering a dream.
So I've spent most of the morning hugging my pillow and crying. Yay for not having coping mechanisms.
:(

So that, if anybody was curious, is why I'm not feeling too great this morning.

Yikes, that's terrible... Poor Neo... :(

I know it's dreadful, but you'll get over it eventually. I had a fairly similar nightmare once that left me in a really bad state when I woke up, but I got over it. Just hang on. Eventually it'll fade, it'll no longer seem like memories, only like a bad dream.

Man. I don't think I've ever heard anyone getting so involved in a dream before. I certainly haven't, though most of my dreams involve blowing stuff up and running around. I watch too many action movies.

I think dreams which are particularly vivid and moving are often compriesd of a hotch-potch of memories, sometimes even repressed memories. Repressed memories are interesting because you honestly won't recall that they ever happened until some incident triggered you to recover them. I'm not saying that the incidents in the dream actually happened, but rather the emotions and experience of loss/grief/love that you experienced in the dream were mixed up, and cast over the fictional incident in your dream. Just because the events in the dream didn't happen, doesn't mean that the actual incidents in your life which triggered the emotions are any less valid.

An example is of a dream I had of a conversation between me and a person who let me down in my real life when I was a child. The events in my real life triggered feelings for me, of guilt and anger which were very real. The conversation in the dream was pretty much this person telling me that it was my fault that she failed to take responsibility for my welfare. While I know in my waking rational consciousness that it was she who acted in a negligent way, the reality of those feelings of guilt and anger at myself are still very real, and must be acknowledged as such.

What I mean to say is don't feel silly for being so moved over a dream. Those feelings are just as valid as any feelings that arise over non-dream incidents. And sometimes hugging your pillow and crying is the best way to deal with it.

No, when I woke up, it seemed like that was real. Like it had actually happened to me over the past month. I'm still having trouble remembering some real events from the actual past month, it's like the memories got pushed out of the way.

I suppose I should tell my psychiatrist about that...
Seriously? Yeah, that would be a good idea. You should also write down your dreams as soon as you wake up (if you don't already). That's what I do; I frequently forget my dreams not too long after waking up, so I always try to write them down.

I think dreams which are particularly vivid and moving are often compriesd of.... <snip>
I agree with Boodicka. This could be a reflection (however distorted) of past events. I also agree with the statement that the emotions invoked can be just as intense as actual experiences.

From time-to-rare-time, I will have an intense dream where I wake up crying or scared witless. One time, I dreamt that a giant spider was crawling above the couch where I was sleeping, and I shot at it with a semi-automatic pistol, emptying an entire clip. I woke up soon afterwards.

You'll be fine, Neo-Anarchists, I know you will. :)
