Holden is a f***ing IDIOT!

Okay, I'm watching Chasing Amy again (Great movie) and I just can't help but feel that Holden is a fucking idiot! I mean, seriously, she did some things almost ten years ago that really have no bearing on his current relationship and he acts of if she did it now, while dating him, and thus betrayed him. This was before she'd even met him and he's acting as if it had been going on behind his back the entire time he'd known her.

This was, in my opinion, a pretty damn good relationship. They're in a similar career, they love being with each other, and they're the kinda couple who you could imagine saying "I get lost in your eyes....". This was real. This was love. But he just ruins it because he can't deal with the past.

I mean I'm not saying any man would be able to take this information in perfect stride, but a person with any intelligence would realise that what she did then is not what she is now. That she hasn't done anything against you. That what the two of you have is something that most people in the world hunger for for their entire lives. Talk to her about it, yes, but don't leave her over it or even treat her any differently. She's the same person she was before you found out.

Holden is a fucking idiot.

EDIT: Oh, and his idea for a three-way at the end was just moronic.

It's just a movie. And not a very good one at that.

It's a double standard that men are frequently guilty of. A lot of men get extremely jealous when they find out about their partner's prior sexual experiences, expecting every girl they date to be virginal and pure, while at the same time seeing nothing wrong with multiple sexual partners in their own past. It's foolish to expect a girl to have never had sex before, and it's ridiculous to get worked up over something a girl did in her sexual history. But a lot of guys are like that, in my experience. And that movie plays it out.

I'd prefer my gfs to have a good sexual history, even preferably bigger than mine. He was suck a dick wank... but I like the movie. And the girl was a hottie ;)

Oh, and I never want to have sex with a virgin...

Not me. When I was single I always prefered a woman with a varied history. Sure it's nice that she'll have learned some tricks already, but you can always teach those to a newcomer, so that's not a big deal. If you can get a virgin their then you have no idea where you stand, if you can lay it down for a European bisexual dominatrix then you really know what you're doing.

seriously though, I hate Holden Caulfield with a passion, absolutly despised his character in the book.

I mean what the hell. "I want to catch kids as they fall of the cliff hidden by the grain while playing in the field." What is he? Some kind of child molester?

I don't think he can truly be considered a child molester because of his age,b ut he was a moron and a hippocrit.

I like the book but hated him. I think it might be because it is the only book I have read where I hated the main character so much.

I love the confusion on this thread. Either way, I can participate!

Holden in "Chasing Amy" was a bit of an overreacting git. He took his own prejudices, mixed them with a healthy dose of ignorance, and added in a pinch of lusty foolishness.

The whole d*mn movie highlights the main character's many prejudices, so it comes as no surprise that the ending would be highlighting one more of them. He WAS told by his gf that she had not had sex with a man before...I believe. She did lie to him, but mostly because she thought it made him happy to think that he had been her "first" of sorts. Thus he was ignorant of the truth.

The pinch of "I'm having troubles with ALL my friends, why not sleep with everyone!" was where I hit a disconnect. The whole movie was highlighting what happens when you let lust become totally disconected from human emotion; you make mistakes in affairs of the heart. All those ready to learn from other's mistakes got to the end of the movie and were expecting him to make an intelligent desicion.

Then he offers to have three some with two people who are worried about their relationships with HIM and never had much going between each other. It was maddness! The man came to the exact wrong conclusion. The movie ends on a better note, but that prime cut of grade A idiocy just left me blinking.

As for catcher in the rye, I disagree with you guys. The BOOK is amazingly well written, if you understand that the book is written from the perspective of a man in the process of having a nervous breakdown. All of the steps are there, and the reader is given an example of the slow degeneration of the mind when confronted by such problems.

From the start of the book onward he goes through all of the stages of dislocation, alienation, struggles to fit in, wanting to work with children so he can avoid the problems of adults, wishing to live some faraway land, wishing to disappear entirely. Then, at the very end. He saves himselve from the brink; thanks in part to his love of children and specifically his little sister.

The book itself is brilliant, because it tackles a difficult subject from the inside. Holden is not a "hero" he's more of a lost soul, seeking inner salvation.

He's not a child moslester, he sees childhood as life without cares nor worries, yet he understands that there are problems in the world that could harm children. Thus the example of a Catcher in the Rye: he wants to protect other children from danger because he loves his own childhood, so free of cares and worries.

Its part of setting his character; he really is a good person at heart. But his mind is troubled, he's unsteady and in trouble. Look at how many people he visits, searching for "something", some answer or object that will make life better for him.

The book really is hard to read without getting angry at the character's foolish behavior, because the subject it really is dealing with is so increadibly difficult that its hard to talk about at all. Salinger's take on the subject is considered masterful.

Like I said, I loved the book. It is proudly displayed next to the other classics I own. I just did not like the character. He just bugged me too much.

If you've gone through that and you know what it's like to have a period in life where you're honestly convinced that no-one (including yourself) would honestly care whether you live or die, and you just want to believe someone (like the little sister) is still pure and still loves you... Well, it helps you to like yourself and lets you know that you're not alone in the world. We all have different ways to cope with life. Some may not like his methods, but, hell, I'm sure yours tend to piss us off, too, and they probably do others and the world a lot more harm.
