357 Magnum refers to a cartridge. It is rimmed, so it is usually found in revolvers chambered for it. However, there are at least two semiautomatic pistols chambered for 357 Magnum - the Coonan Arms (now out of production) and the Desert Eagle (also available in other chamberings).

Revolvers can be chambered for other cartridges, as can semiautomatic pistols.

In case this is a touch too technical for you 2nd Russia;

The .357 Magnum is referring to a specific kind of bullet. It has special properties that require guns that are capable of using it.

I think it was first popularized by the "Dirty Harry" films...

No, the 357 is much older - the first of the "magnum" handgun cartridges. The "Dirty Harry" films use the 44 Magnum.

Magnums have longer cartridges, containing more powder, which means bigger boom, higher muzzle velocity, and much more powerful.

Beyond that, there are also magnum rifles, and they are so named due to above described bullet properties.

Magnums where originally developed by big game hunters who discovered that ordinary bullets just didn't kill a lot of big animals. Since back then you only had one shot, if it didn't kill you where fucked. To make sure their one shot counted they started to over load their shells with more powder, thus arose the Magnum. Of course back then you had almost a good a chance for your gun to explode as to kill anything. Today's are specially designed shells fired from specially designed guns as others here have explained.

Thanks for the answers, guys. God i love the internet. I always wondered why the desert eagle was considered such a powerful pistol.
