what would aliens think of our planet?

Pure Metal

i think they'd think we're all crazy, and that we all obey the magic red and green lights at junctions ;)

that, and i think they'd be astonished at the number of War memorials there are in Europe (& the world) - practically every town/city has one for each World War. its an indication of something pretty major happening and aliens would probably find it pretty interesting.

whadda you think?

Slim pickings, methinks.

They'll probably assume dogs are in charge...

Nah, sorry - they'd probably say Cats were in charge rather than dogs :fluffle:

they would think we are lead by dogs and that cats are our masters.

we walk our dogs, and we clean up their crap.

we let cats have free rule over our homes, and clean their crap.

then they would also see us as hiddious bodies of skin and hair, after all aliens are 7 foot tall, have smooth skin, and 2 heads, much more advanced then we are.

then their are those aliens that have big heads, like easter island. hmm, maybe everyone in the universe are just freaks, and no one wants to admit it.

Not all of them are more advanced than us. :) Some are backwords, some just begginning, some are thousands of years ahead of us. Easter Island was carved by people, btw.

They'd watch us destroying the planet we live on...we don't have the technology to move everyone onto a new planet. We're busy fighting eachother. Basically, we're easy targets.

One of four things would happen:

They'd laugh their asses off at us.

They'd start sobbing uncontrollably.

They'd look the plaent over, sigh and leave.

They'd look over the planet, grin and launch an invasion for labor.

A better question is what they'd think of us trashing our solar system. Earth orbit is full of garbage, most US and Russian. The moon has a bunch of US equipment on it. The solar system has all kinds of US stuff flying around. And then there's the extra-system probes, waiting to get shot at by Klingons or turned into galaxy crossing conciousness', bent on eliminating all life on Earth.

You know, if our Sci-Fi is any indication of what's out there... I dunno if I WANT to meet an alien.

And then there's what they think about our TV. From the first TV signal of Hitler opening the Olympics up to modern signals. I can only imagine what the hell they think is wrong with us when they descramble Playboy TV...

They would think a growing subsect of the human species are born with their hands attached to their ears, with small shiny things that play polyphonic versions of today's hit music and classics in between this attachment.

Or they could be like in Turtledove's WorldWar series...

Really, really, really slow developing aliens that have really old intelligence on Earth and think that we still use Crusades technology, so they show up with late twentieth-century style technology... in 1943. Needless to say, they were quite suprised.

They'd probably go around putting masks on, taking drunks and hicks into their spaceships, giving them an anal probe, telling them something like they have been chosen to represent Earth and then letting them go just to see what they do and laugh their heads off at them.

whadda you think?

You mean a culture advanced enough to come visit us wouldn't understand the concept of ordering a traffic system reduce traffic accidents? Or indeed that they likely would have even more war memorials scattered throughout their cities? What with likely a much longer history.

Basically, I don't think we can speculate much on the matter because it would depend on how the Alien culture developed and even how their thought process works. In Humanity concepts and thought process can vary from language to language, imagine what kind of difference would exist when you start trying to compare two intelligent species from different planets.

To the question, "what would they think of our planet?", theyd see it as a rocky nickle/iron spheroid, weighing about 5e24 kg, completing one orbit of its parent star every 365.25 rotations at a distance of 149,600,000 km.
75% of the landmass is covered in water, and it has a fairly thick atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen, oxygen and argon, with a slowly increasing percentage of carbon-dioxide.

It would be like us watching a planet (to save costs) and seeing primitive people in a beautiful farm. Then we'd get all worried that they might develop technology 4000% faster than us, because we look at a transmission a month later and see a shopping mall.
