I'm moving to Amsterdam!

Well, not anytime soon... after my degree, but someday i will live there ;)

My parents and I just went on a trip to see family in Germany and stopped off in the lovely city of Amsterdam, and that place instantly felt like home to me :)
It's a beautiful, clean, quiet and environmentally-friendly city (from what I saw); its laid-back and relaxed but has a can-do attitude; the people aren't afraid to express themselves and do what they like - they're at home with themselves and seemingly aren't total slaves to the pressures of fashion or 'style' (like Paris/the people in Paris seems to be). The architecture is stunning and the canals are tranquil. The people seem friendly, and weed is legal. Sounds like heaven to me :)

So, come one, come all to Amsterdam! It rocks!

Now, somebody teach me a little Dutch! :D

Well, lotta nice things you mentioned, but I know the real reason you wanna move to Amsterdam:

Coffee Shops!

and I ain't talking Starbucks here... they sell pot there, totally legal.
;)
Anyways, from what I've heard, its a nice city, most of my friends have been there :D
Yeah, have you ever been to Dresden in Germany? This is a beautiful city.

Nothing wrong with Rotterdam!

Seems all the good music scenes come from there (if you're into that sort of thing)

It is with a view to make it illegal once the have blocked the main points of sale.

But simply having a Dutch passport does not allow me to read Dutch (mores the pity), so we'll have to wait for a Dutch person to come online and tell us about 'Harry Potter's" plans for drug laws.

Well I read it in the paper nearly two years ago (I think), and the article gave the impression that they were taking a slowly slowly approach to it, so a new government maybe formed before they can finish the scheme.

We do have a law saying it is illegal to posses drugs. Soft and harddrugs. But in some low quantaties they dont arrest and prosecute u for it. So it is in some way allowd to have some softdrugs. (5 gramms of weet, (some places different i belief)
A coffie shop may have a bit more. (like 50 gramms) they need way more ofcource and have way more but nobody acts. But they could if there was to much trouble with the shop.
But it is still illigal to grow weet. (atleast if it isnt for ur own use) 3 plants or so for ur own use is not acted against.
So how do coffie shops get there weet? Well the front door (selling to the public) is legal, but the backdoor (buying for the person who grows it) is illegal.
The police knows this but doesnt act against the illigal backdoor buying but does act against the plantations.
Its all really complicated.
We dutch love to make laws and then brake them over and over again and tolerate it.

I mean, I expect poor smilie usage from many of the jokers here. An overabundance of gun-totin' smilies. Poor use of the head-banging smilie. You know, that sort of thing.

my biggest memory of the netherlands is the bikes - bikes are everywhere, you would think therefore (being so fond of bikes) that everyone would have some top of the range racing bike, but no! the majority of bikes (from what I saw) seemed to be at least 10 or 15 years old. Literally hundreds of them would line the railings on the sides of the canals and paths and none of them would have locks!

apart from this (I love cycling and would therefore not do great in a city where a top of the range bike is 10 years old) amsterdam is one of my favourite cities. Others include London, because I live there and know it well, and orleans is France

You really must have looked over something. Because bikes all have locks here. If your bike doesnt have a lock it will get stolen in about 2 hours. And sold for 10euro's.
In amsterdam there are stolen between 80000 and 250000 bikes a year. (Nobody knows) because when a bike a stolen a lot of ppl dont go to the police. A lot a ppl just buy a new bike for 10 euro's.

Anyway. Other people's misery doesn't make me feel better, so I'm gonna cheer YOU up (http://www.baggerunited.nl/band/foto/albums/5/DSC00199.JPG) :fluffle:

Nope, that's Afrikaans (second official language in South Africa).

Which is based on Dutch (the VOC or Dutch East Indies Company got around) ;) As reflected in many other famous Afrikaans words. "Boer" for instance is Dutch for "farmer". Afrikaans is Dutch for "language spoken in Afrika".
In some ways Afrikaans is even "more Dutch" than Dutch due to there being less "pollution" from other languages.
