I'm Coming out of the Closet

The South Islands

I have a confession to make. Many of you will hate me for this, but I have to get it off my chest. I know this makes me a horrible and immoral person, but I must speak my mind. If you must know my crime against humanity, read on.

I'm a Conservative. I would have voted For George W. Bush. I supported the War in Iraq. I am of the Right Wing. I do not support the Left Wing. I hate Communism and Socialism. I like Capitalism.

I do not believe in Universal Government health care.

I do not believe in leagalizing Drugs.

I am a Christian.

I do not like the ACLU, the Indy Media, or Democracynow.net.

I like President George W. Bush.

I do not support unregulated Abortion.

I know I am a terrible person. Only my blood can repay my terrible sin.

I do not believe in leagalizing Drugs.

I am a Christian.

I do not support unregulated Abortion.

I too am a devout Christian and a Republican, and I share many of you Moral values.

However, I stop at my Right's and don't attempt to Legislate my Morality on the masses. Why do you feel it is ok to do such things?

You have the Right to live your life in any way you see fit, as long as you infringe on no one else's Rights. Why do you feel you do have some Right to tell people what they can do when it affects you in no direct way and doesn't infringe on your Right's one iota?

I have stated I confront those on the same side of the Political spectrum as I do, but overstep the "bounds" in which our Society has allowed us to "live with" one another. So I am just practicing what I preach here...

So might you please explain how you feel you have a Right to do more than just be an example for others to live by?

Gaar

I never said that I would force anything on anyone. Just because I do not believe in, for example, Abortion, doesnt mean that I would try to force my believes on anyone or any group of people.

Who am I to try to force my views on the world on someone else?

But they aren't seperate. Christianity teaches above all else that people have a duty to their fellow men. Capitalism teaches above all else that people are naturally self-interested, and have a duty only to themselves. Those aren't reconcilable doctrines.

Most sects of Christianity teaches, above all else, to love God and Jesus. My Church does. All else is secondary, in my personal opinion. do not believe I have a duty or an obligation to help people. This is MY christianity. MY personal opinion.

Actually, Capitalism espouses that, by considering the welfare of others we get them to consider our own...

Which does not oppose Christian beliefs in the least.

Why would you think it would?

Your obviously not understanding one of the major points of capitalism. That you are free to do with your resources as you please. If that means being nice and giving money to charity, then you can do that. After all, what donating to charity does for some is buys them a warm feeling on the inside.

I understand it well enough to question why if I'm acting purely out of rational self-interest I would bother to spend my money on charity. To be charitable more or less by definition implies that I'm not thinking either rationally or about what is purely in my self-interest.

Moreover, if you read The Wealth of Nations, Smith is quite clear that charity actually screws up the natural balance that the Invisible Hand is trying to create.

You are grossly mistaken on many counts. Above all else Christians have a duty to God above all else. Every Sunday school student knows that. The Church also teaches responsibility, self sufficiency and faith in God to provide. Not faith in government or charity, but only in God. The Church does teach sharing and charity, but also teaches that compulsory sharing/charity is immoral (Thou shalt not steal). These overlap, coincidentaly, many of the cornerstones of capitalism. The finest point of capitalism is the fact that it is impossible to accomplish success for yourself without it also benefitting the whole community.

It was a nice try, but you stumbled over your ignorance of Christian beliefs, then fell into the hole that should have been filled with your understanding of capitalism.

After further studies at Oxford, Smith returned to Glasgow in 1751, appointed as a professor of logic. A year later, he became chair of moral philosophy. In 1759, he published The Theory of Moral Sentiments.

In this work, Adam Smith explored a question that concerned many of the Scottish philosophers, including his former professor Hutcheson: if men were driven by selfish passions, why are they able to form (and act upon) moral judgements? Adam Smith believed, that every person had an "inner man", an "impartial spectator" that approved or condemned every human action whether performed by the self or others.

The finest point of capitalism is the fact that it is impossible to accomplish success for yourself without it also benefitting the whole community.

It was a nice try, but you stumbled over your ignorance of Christian beliefs, then fell into the hole that should have been filled with your understanding of capitalism.

I refer you to the Parable of the Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke. An expert of the law asks Jesus how to gain salvation. Jesus' reply is to ask the expert what the law stipulates. The expert answers by saying "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul.", which is quoted out of Leviticus if I'm not mistaken (although I could be, as I sometimes get my Levitican Law mixed up with my Deuteronomical Law), and secondly to treat others as you would your neighbor (which is quoted out of Deuteronomy IIRC). Jesus answers that the expert is correct. When the expert then asks how to define "neighbor", Jesus responds by giving a parable.

A man is beaten and left for dead by robbers on the road to Damascus. He is passed first by a Levite, then by a priest, who both for various reasons refuse to help the man (the priests, for example, are forbidden to touch dead flesh in Leviticus because it makes them ritually impure), before being helped by a Samaritan to the next town and put up in an inn to recover on the Samaritan's dime. Jesus asks the expert who the neighbor of that man was. The expert replies that the Samaritan was, to which Jesus replies that the expert is not far from the Kingdom of Heaven.

Now, this might seem trite, except for the fact that according to 2 Chronicles (Ch. 20, IIRC), the Samaritans are people who were moved into Judah and Israel during the Babylonian Captivity and then indoctrinated in some (but not all) of the beliefs of the Jewish faith. They were not Jews, and while they shared some of the same beliefs, the differences were enough that the Jews of the day despised them as heretics. Ah, but according to Jesus, the standard definition of piety, which the Levite and priest would have met, were not worth a hill of beans when it came to fulfilling God's commandments, and the insinuation is that they had more love for piety than they did for God. What then can we conclude? To me, the only logical conclusion is that you demonstrate your love for God by being socially just to other people. To say that "you have a duty to God above all else" is both truistic and trivial.

Perhaps your religious studies weren't as heavily influenced in the Social Gospel Doctrine as mine were.

What's your point? I was arguing that you should be able to do what you want in the privacy of your own home if it doesnt harm anyone. You're probably right about the harmful affects of alcohol but i dont see how that matters.

I believe I was helping to support you assertions, just as the post I replied to was helping to support mine earlier...
