Do you think another tsumani is eminent, after the 8.2 earthquake near Sumara? What action might be taken by the US if another tsumani occurs??

I recently heard it on the BBC news. They said it was 8.7

It's already been verified that there isn't going to be a tsunami.

Let's just hope the conspiracy-theorists who claim the government is testing seismic weapons technology aren't going to start ranting.

8.7?? i heard 8.2 but either way if another tsunami occurs the devastation is going to devestate the already devestated...and that which was rebuilt after the first.

Conspiracy-theorists and seismic weapons?? thats funny but doubtful, why use that when we have nuclear weapons, but ya know another gun in the case doesnt hurt

UU scientists issue Indonesia earthquake warning
The stresses in the earth's crust which have resulted from the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake have significantly increased the risk of another large earthquake in the already-devastated Indonesian island of Sumatra, according to new research findings by scientists from the University of Ulster's School of Environmental Sciences.

According to their calculations, published in this week's edition of leading scientific journal Nature, the Christmas 2004 earthquake which generated the massive tsunami which hit Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka and killed 300,000 people, has significantly increased the stress on two other fault zones in the area - one of them running directly under the city of Banda Aceh which was so badly effected by the Boxing day event - the other under the sea off the west coast of Sumatra.

The latter could generate another tsunami.

The University of Ulster team, led by Professor John McCloskey of the School of Environmental Sciences, analysed data from the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake to look at its impact on other faults in the area. The analysis process is described in the Notes For Editors below.

The analysis found two zones showing significantly increased levels of stress - one in the Sunda trench, a 50km-long underwater zone off the northern tip of Sumatra, and the other in the Sumatra fault, which runs for 300km along the centre of the island of Sumatra, ending under the city of Banda Aceh.

"Our results show a stress increase of up to 5 bars in the Sunda trench next to the rupture zone, and a strong positive loading of 9 bars for 300km of the Sumatra fault," said Professor McCloskey.

These levels of seismic stress indicate significantly increased risk of an earthquake, said Professor McCloskey. Previous work on the earthquakes on the Sunda trench show that it has produced large (up to M8.5) earthquakes and two in 1833 and 1861 produced fatal tsunamis.

If there was one huge earthquake with a Tsunami, I don't think I would stick around long enough to witness another one. If I survived the first one I would be on the first flight to North Dakota (I picked ND. because nothing ever really happens there.)

It's not seismic weaponry, it's the stolen spacecrafts landing. It's only obvious.

Um, do you realize how broke they all are?
Let me put it this way, if you loose more people in a natural disaster than you were even aware that you had, you don't exactly have the most developed country in the world.
"sucks that they choose to live"
Its not really a choice, they either continue to live where they were born or swim for it. Only to drown at sea or get eaten by dingos upon reaching Oz (Australia for the Yanks). This isn't cuba, which has a well developed country not that far away, this is the third world, accusing them of 'choosing to live there' is the same as accusing the starving children in Africa of being to lazy to buy a kids meal.

The real question is why does anyone live in Florida? You get hit with at least one major hurricane a year. And North Carolina's no better. Its like the idiots who keep loosing their trailers in Tornados, you have a truck, your house has a hitch and wheels, hook it up and MOVE!

Because seismic weapons are a way to make it appear natural. Plus, seismic weapons can level an entire country, but the place isn't permanently uninhabitable, like with nukes. I'm no conspiracy-theorist, but seismic-weaponry, if it exists, would totally kick ass (in an evil, Karl Rove kind of way).

Least its a better use of money than that stupid Star Wars program. 'Oh we'll use GPS' um... me and 3 of my friends own little GPS devices, we can stand next to each other and the stupid things think we're meters apart, and that the shortest of the bunch is on the top of a small cliff. Your trying to use this system to shoot down relatively small objects moving at several times the speed of sound? Makes about as much sense as the duck and cover of the olden days. Don't worry kiddies, the nukes won't hurt ya, just hide under your desk in the fetal position.

There is a volcano close to US and with its next eruption it would implode, creatng waves off miles high, destroying the East-coast of both America's and east coast Africa. Can't really remember where I read it.

Anyhow nature can eliminate us anytime, anywhere. Sooner or later another tsunami, earthquake, etc... is going to hit us.

What I wonder about is, with all the espionage thingies US and all have in space, how come nobody saw the first tsunami coming in? I mean, an energy-wave that big can't be that hard to trace, can it?
And in response to the guy with the GPS-devices: there's a big difference between your public GPS-toys and the GPS that US army has. The latter has a much higher precision. Which US army does not wish to share with everybody. Which is why Europe decided to start its own GSP-program. Which pissed US. Which I like. Vote Bush again succers, you're fucking everybody with it, but yourself most of all.

USually the lands near volcano's are very rich in minerals. Good for planting.

Anyway, most of them are too poor even to move to somewhere else. Hence We get lots of illegal immigrants problem.

Considering that calendars may or may not be entirely accurate. ;)

But there is nothing strange about this earthquake, in that they actually expected another large quake on that same fault after the first one and had predicted this one would occur.

Now they are projecting yet another quake in the near future to the south of yesterday / today's quake. They've described the quakes as being "triggering earthquakes" where the energy that is released is stored in other parts of the fault.

As for the lack of the formation of tsunami, I like the description my morning paper had about slip faults vs. thrust faults. The Boxing Day 2004 Quake was a thrust fault, and a large amount of water was displaced. The Easter Monday 2005 Quake *may* have been a slip fault, meaning no water was really displaced near the epicenter ... hence no wave action.
