Linux!

Mac sucks, they crash too, at least I can crash them quickly. Their hardware is not really breathtaking, and you barely get any good games (and if? they're pretty expensive, about the same as US originals around here).

Sides... try running a server on Mac.

Macs are far more reliable, my one has only crashed once in 6 months - my old microsoft computer crashed once a week. so do my parent's computers. I'm actually in love with my computer!! I need an ipod, but the price is the thing that's stopping me buying one.

No. Microsoft is the reason so many people own a computer. Also, they make some fantastic peripheral hardware, and produce one of the best games series ever (Age of Empires). They also have some majorly great in-house developers, but sadly, they don't work on Windows, rather their other products such as Office etc.

The pendulum effect at work in a free economy, I'm afraid. Monopolies become complacent, and now Apple is reaping the benefits of a complacent foe. As for Mr. Gates, assuming that what you said is true, he's a very smart man and probably just uses whichever model is superior.

I personally will spend 3 times more on something that will work more often, for longer and better - hence my IMac - the fact that it looks cool is merely a side effect - I don't care about that - if i did, i would be wearing combats, baseball caps, and everything that says Nike/Addidas etc - as it is, I avoid those things. Windows XP has given me only one problem, and that was when an anti-virus program gave me the BSoD. I found that a bit ironic, but when the firewall wasn't installed, it was fine. Windows 2000 is about as good, but I find WinXP more usable.

Win98/ME, especially ME (short for Monkey Excrement) should be shot into the sun.

I don't find Microsoft to be evil. They make good products and make them widely available. I haven't seen anything Bill Gates has done that would make him or the company seem bad. I currently have a Dell PC with XP SP1 and it works very well. There are a few problems, but I attribute them to me being irresponsible.

However today I was looking around Apple's site and a few things impressed me. I have no experience owning Apple computers or iPods but they interest me. I heard the iPod basically beats all other competition as far as how well it works, but I don't know what truth there is to that. I do plan on getting an MP3 player soon though. I also looked at the Dell DJ and I'm wondering what's better.

The G5 PowerMacs seem to be really good. The thing that really caught my eye was the new Mini Mac that has just been introduced. It has a decent computer in a simple, small, and relatively cheap package. The only thing that worries me is some of the products seem expensive and incompatible. Again, all my thoughts on Apple are speculative so I don't know if it really is as good as it seems.

The iPod does beat competition. i bought my 20GB one Wednesday, and it works splendidly. It is fast, and gives you much control. Transfering music is easy and finding the songs on your iPod is easy as well.

Yes. They are the fastest home computers available, I believe.

They are people who do not know how to properly use a computer.Or, they are people:

1. Often running buggy programs that, thanks to the many vulnerabilities in Windows, manage to mess up Windows badly enough to cause a crash.
2. Who happens to be using hardware with crappy Windows drivers.
3. Whose Windows installation has grown too "old" and is dying - a Windows installation is pretty much guaranteed to die within half a year, as long as you install new programs, games and drivers once in a while and use them daily.

No operating system is perfect, but it's not too surprising that Windows is sometimes called "the biggest beta test in history". Sure, you can keep it in a fairly good state for quite a while if you use it very carefully, but the point is that a good OS should be able to withstand tough usage without slowly degenerating until the point of not being able to run at all.

Micro$oft is a terrible company. Not only are they convicted monopolists but they also stifle innovation and produce an inferior product.

I thought Microsoft had finally released a good version of Windows with XP. I recently installed it so I could play some games. I installed Windows, went directly to the windowsupdate website and installed all available critical updates. I used a link from their site to download ad-aware. When I ran it, I found that my computer was already infected with multiple spyware programs, despite having just installed a fresh copy of Windows and not even going to any websites but Microsoft's (and the site it linked to for ad-aware). The spyware kept coming back despite ad-awares attempts at removing it. So, I am without Windows now until they send me a service pack 2 cd, at which time I will install Windows again but this time without being plugged into the internet until after I have installed service pack 2. To top it off, Windows was unable to detect my sound card properly, so I am left without any sound even if I find some way of removing the spyware.

I have come to the conclusion that Windows continues to be total crap. It is the worst operating system in the market and continues to exist only because of the monopoly Micro$oft has been able to maintain.

On the bright side, their incompetence keeps IT security analysts like myself employed.

I have a theory that it's the amount of IT personnel in companies that keeps the sheer volume of Windows machines around. I mean, really, if you were an IT guy (no offence to you, Hippies, I'm just musing here) would you put yourself out of a job by recommending they change to a new OS? One that works? Depends on the size of the company. In a small company, no. You need things to go wrong so you can fix them. In a large company, yes, because the people who design a system are an entirely different group of people from the ones who have to fix it. The group that designs it wants to look good by having it work flawlessly.

Security analysis does not end at the OS

Besides depending on your user base it may be impractical to change to an unfamiliar OS to the users.

Actuall many things ad-aware finds are not threats. Most are just cookies (as you probly know cookies are needed when you update to keep track of what updates you currently have and what you selected). So the "threats" you have are for the most part harmless. Other ones you got could be from adds on ad-aware's ad banners (sort of ironic but does happen).

Well, I'm not sure if the site was serious or just a bit of a rant, but here's my response to it:

Some people like to be able to have different songs available to them at different times of the day. Most people don't like to have to carry around dozens of CDs with them. They are an annoyance. The iPod doesn't "max out" at 10,000 songs; you can change them at any time, so, as with the Discman, the capacity for material is pretty much endless.

Basically, instead of wandering around with a (slightly bulkier) Discman and 200 CDs, you could carry an iPod. Or any other Hard-Drive Music Player. And listen to whatever song you want, whenever you want, without any fuss.

But hey, everyone's entitled to an opinion.

My response to the site is....."WHAT THE HELL??? IT'S SUCH AN UTTER PIECE OF CRAP!!"

And ding ding ding!!! Troon has just won a prize!!!!! Msn me on vengero @ hotmail . com to find out what! (lol). You are so right - and my other comment about the site is that, most other mp3 players are so crap quality (trust me i've had a few) and don't store much on them. Ipods are just much better quality and they're guarenteed to work with macs and pc's whereas most mp3 players only work with pc's....i could go on.
