Art Buying

A few weeks ago, I went on a cruise. They had an art gallery with an auctioneer. I decided that I wanted to go to one. Bad idea.
As it turns out, I bought three art peices. They weren't that expensive, but now I know that I must stay away from art auctions. Now, I know a lot of NSers are out there, and some have probably bought art. Do you find it that addicting as well?

There are art auctions on like every carnival cruise, so you aren't gonna get any rare art.

I've bought art, but never at an auction. And I personally know the artists I buy from. But I agree, once you get started, it's hard to stop.

A.) It wasn't Carnival.
B.) I know what I am buying. It was all lithographs. But my friend was able to get an original on there for a price that was so low, it was theft.

So I see you are trying a bit of surrealism in your landscapes. Very nice. I especially like the coloring and the good use of line. If image #1 was your first piece, then I can see how your style evolved. You do have talent.

I am a fan of both surrealism and vivid colour; Salvador Dali is who I would attribute most of my inspiration... However I've also paid homage to Jackson Pollock and other abstract painters, and dabbled with watercolour landscaping.

I've never really bought any art but i've sold other people's art.
Well, i suppose i technically 'buy' it from the artist to sell, but that all depends on how you phrase it.

Dali is one of my favorites. Pollock is one I find very hard to understand, or like. But if one of his "paintings" rakes up a few million dollars, someone must like it.

Now, just outta curiousity, has anyone ever heard of Slava Brodinsky? I have a lithograph of one of his pieces. Quite lovely. He's a Russian emigre that moved to Israel.
Anyhow, I hear that he is one of the artists to watch. Perhaps he won't be as big as Picasso or Dali, but maybe he can be like Peter Max. Comments?

I'm sorry Eichen, but that painting was given to a friend as a going away present when she moved to Halifax.

Perhaps you can ask to make serographs.

Sheeyit! I really thought that was a sweet composition to brighten up my home office (where I spend most of my day.)
Hope your friend appreciates! :fluffle:

yeah i love those cruise art auctions. they are fun and the prices are pretty good. i let the husband go to one while i was playing a poker tournament. by the time i finished 3rd he had spent $600!
may i respectfully suggest that if you like original art but dont have alot of space, that you consider miniature art. my sister just happens to paint tiny paintings 3x5 inches and smaller. check out "kokoshep" on artbyus.com.

I think it would be best if you both TG'd me, Eichen with what you'd like to pay and l'artiste with how I can contact the proud current owner of the piece.

I like, but it's too angry for an office (I believe colors rub off on me when I'm in a room for hours. As an artist yourself, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.)
I like your Pop/Graphic work much more than the more realist pieces.
But my tastes swing favorably in that direction, so don't listen to me. :)

Thank you, I totally understand a painting really needs to fit a room's particular mood.
Unfortunately for me I'm currently surrounded by 9 paintings, all with conflicting moods :p

I'm not entirely sure what a serograph is exactly... I've always had a preference for original artwork, so I've never given that much thought.
Care to explain?

Actually, my friend's original was quite big. It wasn't exactly expensive, either. It cost only $100. He'll probably appraise it twenty years from now, and, well, let's just say it may be worth a lot more.

Given my entire lack of taste/interest in art, auctions are never really an issue. I have to worry about buying too much in the way of music, movies, and books.

I know a bit on it.
The artist paints on a silk screen, and lets the paint permeate through. It's labor-intensive, but it allows for production that is more valuable (and more authentic) than lithographs, which are nice for business, but I find them a little fake. Serographs at least have authenticity.
