That and nothing more. Just a simple thread with no debate, to wish all those who celebrate a very happy Easter with friends and family.:D As a pagan, I don't quite hold to the theological celebration, but I still travel about with friends and family-at times, it's quite a nice thing to draw together and eat some delicious food!

“Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised...” —Luke 24:5-6

A very happy and blessed Easter to all.

http://www.holidays.net/easter/story.htm

Easter is a time of springtime festivals. In Christian countries Easter is celebrated as the religious holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God. But the celebrations of Easter have many customs and legends that are pagan in origin and have nothing to do with Christianity...

Honestly, all Christian holidays are the most boring Church services ever. It's always the same old story everyyear.

Where did the name, 'Easter' come from, anyway?

I admit, it's catchier than 'I'm Glad You're Alive Again Day'. But I'd like to know the origin of the name.

Someone said in another post something about a Pagan goddess named Eostre. Ithink it was thegoddess of Spring?!

also, special thanks to whoever it was that decided the candy should be passed out by a cute cuddly bunny rather than by Jesus...not to bash anybody's religion, but i would rather get candy from a rabbit than from a many-punctured zombie :). i think the kids respond better to a bunny than to a bleeding walking undead guy.

It is interesting to note that Jesus was the only person to come back from the dead that people didn't run screaming from. :)

I don't know if you're being sarcastic but it would. Easter is just as much a Pagan holiday as it is a Christian holiday.

no joke. i mean, i'm really not trying to blaspheme or whatever, but how are we supposed to tell kids not to take candy from strangers if we encourage them to take candy from zombies?

Oh, it wasn't sarcasm. It wouldn't be the first pagan holiday that got christianized.

Honestly though, bunnies laying eggs are no less weird. A bit less grisly, but just as weird.

Why do all the really interesting holidays need imaginary figures to distribute the goodies?

Easter, eh? So that's what all those obnoxious decorations at the grocery store were all about. I guess I should go color a rabbit egg or club a baby seal or something festive like that.

Meh. Maybe I'll just watch TV.

Indeed, but the importance does not fade. Also, depending on the aspects and manner in which it is explored, it can be very interesting.

Technically, Ostara/Eostre's day was the 21rst, the Equinox. But that wasn't a sunday lol. *dances around singing Lord of the Dance- both versions* go Jesus! go Persephone! Go Lord and Lady! Go Eostre!

Being agnostic I don't religiously celebrate Easter. However I celebrate it with my family with coloring eggs the night before and hunting them Easter morning with my sisters (nobody's too old, my sisters 21 and she does it still), then making egg food meal thingys, and eating ham! Plus the chocolate.

That reminds me, I was conducting a survey around Christmas time at my school asking, 'What is the true purpose/meaning of Christmas?'

Over 80% of people said stuff like 'To give/be generous/be kind/etc.'

People have been corrupted by the commercialization of Christian holidays.

Eastre was a fertility goddess whose symbol was one of the most fertile of animals, the rabbit. That's why there's an Easter bunny.

Easter isn't just for Christians any more either. I'm a pretty hardcore Atheist but Easter is so secularized and capitalist now that even I can celebrate it. Plus, its a great excuse to get candy! :D

Though Easter hasn't had the same reconnection to secular humanism, I still don't think it was really corrupted so much as chocolate coated. Literally. :D

Eggs USED to be a seasonal delicacy, because birds (and chickens are birds) need the extended sunlight in order to produce them -- for springtime, a time of rebirth. (Egg farmers keep their birds in light nearly constantly to make them lay year round)

It was indeed Eostre as earlier mentioned, and the story goes something like this:

The creatures of the forest were all trying to find a way to celebrate the return of spring, and to pay tribute to Eostre. The rabbit wondered what he could possibly give her because he was small, meek, and not too strong. He happened upon some eggs -- extremely desirable as a delicacy -- and decided to give them to Eostre rather than eat them himself (a bit of a sacrifice there). He colored them to echo Eostre's spring colors -- yellows, and blues and reds, like the flowers budding. When Eostre saw them, she liked the gift so much that the rabbit became Eostre's Bunny.... and he now delivers colored eggs to people celebrating the Equinox.

A Happy Easter to the NS Christians!

Happy Good Friday to all the NS Anti-Christians out there!

Yeah, I know the whole "crucifixion thing" didn't work out as planned... but come on, who coulda seen that resurrection deal coming?

And yes, I'm still pissed about baby Moses getting clean away in that makeshift floating basket. If it hadn't been for those meddling Jews!

Oh well.... it's only 7 months till Halloween...

The only reason I wrote about Eostre and the rabbit is because people asked about how the egg and rabbit and Easter were tied into the Christian celebration.

At least it's more on topic than the snide remarks being made about Christianity in a thread meant simply to spread good wishes to toehr practitioners, but hey.

Yep, happy day-after-Easter-eat-some-leftovers to all!

Whomever posted about the Easter/Eostre/bunny/egg connection was right on. In addition, Wiccans and Pagans (like me) these days call the Equinox celebration "Ostara". Yet another version of the same word.

And for technicallity, the Equinox was on the 20th this year, at least in North America. In a few years it will start occuring on the 19th even!
