Two were killed at a large fire in a popular art market in Moscow. With the large crowds there, thank God more weren't hurt.

Now I know that this may be a cheap shot, but I don't care. This fire was handled the same way as other crises are handled in Russia: ignore a potential problem, and when it flairs up, ignore it until it is a threat. Part of this can be blamed oon the government at all levels, and this is just another reason why Russia needs huge structural reforms.

Any idea how many people died in accidents around the world yesterday? Me neither, but a lot more than two. What is the obsession with the ex USSR?

Rest assured, people do care. I think this brings up two important issues.

1. The Moscow police and fire departments need to work on their reaction time. Putin also needs to get his head out of his ass, and work towards this goal.

2. You mentioned how no one cares? That is a sad statistic I am afraid. People generally do not look upon an international issue unless it involves more than a few people dead. Sucks I know.

So, no one cares?on this forum? if it cannot be blamed on the Dems or the Reps, or Bush or on Homosexuals, or on Christians, or greedy Americans... nope, no one would care.

sad tho... I remember a story a while back, told by a figure skating pair. they had an accident. the girl was sliced up bad and the Russian pair skaters told them to go to the hospital and that they'll meet them there. At the Hospital, the place was such a mess that he seriously thought that she was going to die here.... when a couple minutes later, the Russian pair came in with their PERSONAL Physician and Nurses... and they brought their stuff which was US hospital quality.

sad when even their people won't trust the state and government. Fortunatly it was a long time ago and I hope conditions have chaned for the better.

Because Russia is still in transition from a communist dictatorship to a free market democracy. I'm doing my best to ensure that the former dies, as there is too much of it lingering in the ex USSR.

Actually, there seems to be a disproportionate number of fires in the former USSR as compared to, say western Europe. The number of fatalities is also on average higher. I figure it has to do with the shoddy building construction of the USSR's housing. Fire deaths are sad and angering especially when they can be easily prevented.

The USSR did have miserable construction standards. But the inefficiency of fire departments in Russia is pitiful, and there is no attempt to even install fire hydrants. What made me post this, however, was that it reminded me of Russia's fire in that TV tower a few years back. That was an embarrassment, and the Russians were woefully unprepared for it. Ironically enough, it happened after another tradgedy, the sinking of the Kursk submarine. The even worse part about that was that it was brand new. It tells one a lot about Russian engineering these days.
