What should replace the M16/M4 family?

The US army is condidering replacing the M16/M4 family. The XM-8 (the HK-36) is the main contender. Should it be? If not, what should be, and why?

Might as well suggest a BB gun. "Stun" guns ain't going to do the job. (I assume you were making a joke, but sometimes it's hard to tell...)

Not anymore. The XM-8 was removed from the list of possibilities. They're now looking towards a joint project between H&K and Fabrique Nationale, I believe.

Well, aside from the reliablity and weight (especially ammunition) issues, there's always going to be the "it's a Russian weapon" problem...

AK-47 is too outdated - We would have to use a more modern variation on it, then it wouldn't be half bad.
And AK's have reliability issues? Whhhhhaaattt?!

Technically, it's German. The Russians stole the design after WW2- The German version was the StG-44 (http://198.144.2.125/MG42/FULL/STG-44%201.jpg).
So you could probably get away with it on a technicality ;)

Hmm.. . Proof? Haven't seen anything that's said the XM-8 was excluded. Especially funny when you say an HK/FD desigh's being considered (the XM-8 is an HK, afterall. One of the complaints is that it's a foreign design. In which case I'd expect a domestic design rater than anothert HK...)

and It is no longer built only in Russia...Its also build in China and probably some other countries.
If they used an AK, it probably would be part of the AK-10x series. I believe its the AK-101 which uses 5.56x45mm, which would make it viable to switch to it. But thats if they switched to an ak series.
If they wanted an instantaneous switch, they should probably go for the Famas. It accepts M16 magazines, its bullpup, and its produced by an allied country who would probably be willing to share the design for self-production. America would probably want to make some small modifications to the gun, specifically either putting standard rails on the carry-handle, or a red-dot scope on all of them, like the M-8 would have.
If they are willing to wait for their weapon, an indigenous bullpup would be best. Probably something around the length of an M4a1, ability to mount the M203, multiple rails, etc etc.

that too...
If anything, our boys should adopt this...
http://home1.stofanet.dk/darkness/images/fn/f2000.gif
The F2000, something the guys over at Fabrique Nationale have been cooking up. It's small, ergonomic, has an advanced FCS, compatible with a grenade launcher and uses the NATO standard 5.56mm round. Here are the components.

That, and it has all the quality and innovation associated with Fabrique Nationale.

While the Avtomat Kalisnakov family was clearly influanced by the StG44, the AK47 is clearly not a copy the same weapon. There are clear differences in the workings and ammunition.

Yes. Mostly due to corrosive primers and excess residue. (admitedly that's not really a problem with the rifle itself....)

Well, of course it's an improvement. The influence is pretty obvious, though.
(Not sure what ammunition the StG-44 uses, but yes, the magazine is different from the AK.)

Yep. Word taken. ;)
I have seen suggestions (especially for the USMC for various reasons) for a the next generation rifle to be a 7.62 x 39mm weapon to utilize "battlefield supply".
Yes I want to look cool...but not if it costs million$$...

and I don't think it would be that expensive. So it's a win-win!

Well there was the AK-74 which was basically a 47 rechambered to fire a 5.52mm round, theres also varients such as the ak-100 series which are cool, black and have telescopic sights

Not exactly.
The StG44 used 7.92x33 mm ammunition as opposed to the standard 7.92x57 mm ammunition used in the K98k.
Mikhail Kalashnikov has consistently (and believably looking at the final design) denied basing his design on the StG44. He hasn't (AFAIK) denied anyb influance.

OH NOES!!
Anyway, time for me to head back to the hotel on the Underground. London's public transportation system kicks serious ass.
And Cockfosters is an awesome name for a stop.
Bye everyone! See you on the Piccadilly Circus/King's Cross station line!
