I declare my boycott of FOX News and CNN

Sorry, but as I'm staying up and doing work, I decided to have a listen-in on the news.
As I'm flipping past CNN and FOX I realize that they've totally de-humanized the Terri Schaivo story - their 24 hour coverage has resulted in the most outrageous treatment of the story, trying to find *some* new angle as to fill every nook and cranny of their 24-hour broadcast.
As an aspiring journalist, it sickens me. Damn corporate* media, making my potential occupation one of the most distrusted jobs in America
Join me in boycotting these mockeries of journalism!
*(no, I don't hate corporations - I just really need to use some sort of insult right now to alleviate my sickened feeling)

Good for you, then. And, like you, I don't hate *all* corporations, though I must admit that there are many bad ones.

Good work. I suggest switching to an unbiased news source, such as democracynow or indymedia.

The only way to affect a change in how news is reported is not to watch it. Ratings go down they will change. Way to start a revolt. Hope it works out.

Unless you are one of the 5,000 or so households in the US who is participating in the Nielsen statistical sampling system, you arent affecting ratings.

remember: news is a business.
just like any other business, their number one priority is to make money.
they make money when people watch their show (higher ratings means they can charge more for advertising)

Don't be so sure. I personally have done neilson twice. Purposely wrote down that I watched public broadcasting channel. Also listed odd ball channels and shows. They probably thought I was nuts.

And the reason why I haven't watch Fox News in awhile. I'm tired of hearing about Shaivo.
Indymedia has a slight liberal bias. Plus, what FNC and CNN are doing is nothing compared to Willian Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer's papers. Look up "yellow journalism" and you'll see that the news back then were more tabloids than facts.

Thats not how they get the official ratings. They get the official ratings by installing monitoring devices on your TV and VCR (maybe DVD now too?). If you were contacted by them and they did not install anything, then the research you took part in was not for use on the official TV ratings.

I would classify the news on CNN and Fox as "Yellow Journalism."
1. The latest on Terri's Feeding Tube! (a nurse touched it  )
2. Michael Jackson accuses his accusers of raping him!
3. All terra, all teh time!*
4. Why Bush's Social Security plans are GOOD for you!*
*Mostly confined to Fox. CNN is also guilty of this, but not to the same extent.

This is how they did it in the 80s too. However, they do compare their participating sample to samples they get from surveys to make sure their current sample really is representative. So, by choosing things that very few people watch, all you did was lead them to believe that the participants they currently have are not that representative and they need to have more participants from you region since you have vastly different viewing habits (assuming your answers werent buried by a ton of more common answers).

Very possibly so. I don't know much about them other than they do put cash in there envelopes. "For your troubles" Wasn't much really. Thought it was funny.

That would actually be a great job. I could destroy a few dozen TV's a day. It could really be very satisfying to throw something large and heavy, especially if you could do it on a couple of channels. I'd love to be able to throw my big marble ashtray at Chris Matthews a few times a day.

Back on topic: It also shows how lazy the networks have become. They can't be bothered going out and trying to find news, so when something like this lands in their lap, they beat it to death until the next 'big' thing comes along.
When was the last time you saw true investigative reporting on CNN or FOX and not this reactive 'news' casting that they do?

CNN- ratings hawks
Fox- biased, really biased
MSNBC- don't know what the hell they're doing
FSTV- the leftist version of Fox
Comedy Central- truthful and only has 30 minutes of news a day
All of the above including ABC, NBC, and CBS are two-sided (only think in terms of Democrat and Republican), Comedy Central to some extent, but hey its Comedy central.

Jayson Blair? Who was fired, along with the editor?
The Times learned its lesson from that minor hack -
as bill keller best put it: "Dont hire sociopathic liars."
And as for a conscience problem(?) - they may not have reported on the leadup to the iraq invasion as well as they ought to have, but they did put out a mea culpa.

I hate it when "news" channels cover anything related to celebrities. It really sickens me.
Also, when they find some random kidnapping victim to turn into a national story overnight. Notice that all of their kidnapping victims are white? Usually rich? What about the countless minorities who suffer kidnappings and other crimes?
Oversimplification of complex issues like the economy and foreign policy.
Reinforcement of the dualist political system (democrat/republican)
Ignoring positive important stories (i.e. elections in Afghanistan) in favor of something negative, gorey, scandalous, unimportant, or something else I complained about already.
Being far too influential in the elections.
Relentlessly pursuing family members of victims of some sort, just to get the emotional ratings perk of having people break down on national TV.
PUNDITS WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT AND JUST WANT TO GET VIEWERS BY SENSATIONALIZING EVERYTHING!!!
