Something serious has to be done to prevent this sort of thing. Perhaps the UN should only rely on troops from civilized countries as peacekeepers. Maybe Europe and the US could come to an agreement to dedicate a small percentage of their troops as peacekeepers so as to reduce the UN's reliance on scumbags like those jordanians mentioned in the article.

BTW, have any of the Jordanians been imprisoned for their crimes?

Even if that is all entirely true, they'er not half as bad as American soldiers who catch people in a crossfire. *nods* There, now Ein Deutscher doesn't need to say it.

im sure for every 1 bad peacekeeper, there are numerous excellent ones

shouldnt let the actions of a few ruin your view of the entire peacekeeping organisation...that would be the same as allowing the actions of those in Abu Graibh become your view of the whole US army

but still, something should be done about it

Ah...but this appears to be an on going theme with UN Peacekeepers. Have you forgotten about Africa so soon. And it wasn't Jordanian Peacekeepers there.

Placing underwear on terrorists heads and humiliating them is quite a big step away from Sexual Abuse of children, women and animals. Along with the cover up.

Add in the Oil-for-Food scandal and the UN keeps looking more and more ineffective and crooked.

and im sure Abu Graibh isnt the only incident of abuse in the US army

look, all im saying is that the actions of a few shouldnt taint the image of what is, in general, a good body which does many good things throughout the world

That has got to be one of the more stupid statements. Don't compare American soldiers with crappy UN soldiers there is none. As far as the crossfire. Battles are not clean and neat. I believe the US military goes out of it's way to prevent civilian deaths. Why wouldn't we.

The UN and the US need to stop their squabling because its not helping the third world. You can't let the UN do it because they can be ineffective, you can't let the US do it because they may only want do it their way. There I stated the problems for both sides.

Ok. I feel I have to contribute something more that just spam. 5 of my relatives have served as UN peacekeepers - from Sinai peninsula to Lebanon to Macedonia. I don't remember anyone of them saying anything about raping or killing people while in there. African missions just seem to be too difficult for European nations to send their troops to... as seems East-Timor. It's sad that these countries get the worst of the peacekeepers when west can't send any.

Anyone who breaks the law, especially in such a serious case like this, should be punished under the law and not be able to have their transgressions covered up. However this should not detract from the wonderful job the the UN has actually done in East Timor. Now if only the Australian government would close the Timor gap and stop stealing East Timor's oil... :(

I assume all your relatives are in the Finnish peacekeeping forces? The units tend to stay together according to country of origin. I haven't heard of any incidents that involve the finnish peacekeeping forces, although I could be wrong.

The aussies found the jordanians doing this, and stopped them.

Not contained in the report are subsequent claims of an armed stand-off between Australian soldiers and the Jordanians after a digger blew the whistle on the abuse.

No. I think I'm gone back to spamming. I'd have to actually read the story linked in the initial post to be able to comment... and I just can't be arsed to. sorry.
