My favorite? Classic Punk Rock. The real stuff. The Sex Pistols, to be precise (though the Ramones aren't far behind!).

''I can remember going to those concerts and seeing all those hippies being far out and together, maaaaan, despising me because I was about twenty tears younger than they were and having short hair. That's when I saw through their bullshit. A lot of punks are like that as well, which makes me really sick.'' - John Lydon

I like Metallica and Judas Priest. The next day I'm listening to Pavorotti or the soundtracks to Braveheart or The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Then Type O Negative. then Metallica played on a cello or with a symphony orchestra.

Genre-I'm going to say 20th Century in a broader sense then it's applied to 'classical' (there, I put it quotes so we all know that Classical can only refer to one period but we can also understand it to encompass compositional/legitimate/whatever else you want to call it....dammit...). In the sense I'm applying (provided anyone is still with me here) is atonal, dissonate, modal etc. music (not always composed in the 20th Century) that fits in both 'classical' (steady...), Jazz, whatever...

Artist-Difficult. Kronos Quartet is pretty reliable in 'classical' (easy...), Eric Dolphy in jazz (with Ornette Coleman, World Saxophone Quartet, Pharoah Sanders, on and on...) Soul Coughing in rock, I guess...

Outside of that-Cherry Poppin' Daddies...leave me alone....

One other genre thats pretty awsome is avant-garde, with artists like Glen Branca. This guy invented a thing called a mallet guitar, a guitar wired up to xylophones. He also staged a thing called symphony for 100 guitars in times square, 100 guitars all restrung to the same gauge and all strings tuned to C i think. The sound is incredable.
