In general I think Christians, but at the same time I know that some say/do some really unhelpful things, so I understand why. I just think alot of the time they're all lumped into one category and picked on as a whole, when in reality it's only a small percentage of them (or people pretending to be them) who do/say these things.

All too many people on here have this totally warped idea of what constitutes a "Christian." I think it comes from seeing too many televangelists and far right-wing loose screws. The average Christian is a kind, compassionate person of faith who wishes only the very best for every human life. I know many, many Christians who are like that. Some of them are in my own family.

An honest Christian does his/her best to truly understand the basics of their faith, accepts that science has proven the theory of evolution, realizes that Genesis is an allegory, and would give you the shirt off their back if they thought you needed it. They are among the very best people in the entire human race, and it pains me to see them come on here and try to defend their faith when it's attacked by those of little knowledge and vision.

I don't mean to bash them unfairly. I have experienced their good and their bad...and some of them deserve what they get. I'll reiterate that I know some good Christians though. But the "bad" is what turned me away from religion altogether.

I must agree with you. The vast majority of Christians are decent, upstanding people who are just trying doing their part in the world. Unfortunately, it is human nature to ignore the good things and instead focus on the negetive; militants, fearmongers and bigots, claiming that they are the messangers of God.

People need to understand that these people represent extremism, not true religion, and the mainstream has already denounced them.

Ya know, I made this thread cause I was really curious what people thought but I knew, I knew deep down in my being that in the end it would just be another debate between one group (Christians) and the another group (non). Yet, I was still compelled to do it. Why is that I wonder? As much as I avoid those debates, I still had to do it.
I won't even say who I believe is the most picked on because of the heaps of scorn that would be thrown upon me. Yes, a coward sometimes, but a coward who fesses up.

Well, although I no longer consider myself to be a "Christian" in the usual sense of the term, I have seen far too many people who truly struggle to understand their faith and practice it as best they can to be other than sympathetic. So where do I fall in these two groups?

Being as everyone and everything is fair game for criticism, I have to say that everyone is unfairly picked on, to an extent. OK, so some of it is true and this (forum) is the place to point that out, but many times people are just basing their criticisms on misinformation. I think that is unfair, it's your job to know what you're talking about before you say anything.

I know this is poorly worded; I hope some of you will get the gist of it. :D

ROFL! I had trouble with that too. Although the origins are unclear, most of those in the know believe that it came from several repetitions of a typo:

"owned" ( as in "I did such a good job of refuting you that I own you!" ) became "pwned" ( the "p" is right next to the "o" on the keyboard ) and it stuck. :)

I have little use for "organized religion." It tends to become the justification for its own existence, complete with heirarchies, expensive buildings, rules and regulations, and all the other paraphenalia of most large organizations. True belief resides in the human heart and mind and changes individual behavior.

You're right. I'm a bit pissy, today. I should not have made a comment about his children, even though he pulled them into this. I regret that.

Let's hope for your children you've done it better than I expect. Let's hope so for all children, everywhere.
Children, and their protection and development into responsible, thinking adults, is pretty much what I'm all about now. If you can persuade yourself to trust me just a bit, trust me when I say that all five of mine are kind, responsible, and wise adults now. I can't take all of the credit obviously ( my ex is a beautiful human being, and a [ gasp ] Christian! ), but they periodically come back and thank me for having been their father. :)

It must be really sad to be so cynical at such an early age.

It must be really sad to think your age is of importance, especially since it doesn't help you in mislabeling cynicism.

And just think ...my ancestry is primarily Swedish! Tsk! ;)

Just goes to show that pedigree is not all that important.

At the very least, dying is going to be the ultimate trip, eh? Speculate all we want on what the "other side" might be like, or whether there really is one or not, but sooner or later we'll all find out. The trick is to view dying as just another step in life. My personal inclination is to lean a bit toward reincarnation, or at least some sort of continuing existence. It seems to be a law of the universe that nothing ever really goes away, so what about all of the memories, expeirences, personality, etc. that make up who we are? Does that just "go away?"

Tell you what ... since I'll probably find out before most of you on here, once I "get there" ( if there is a "there" ) I'll send back a sitrep. ( Sitrep = Situation Report, a military term ). Fair? :D

In general I think Christians, but at the same time I know that some say/do some really unhelpful things, so I understand why. I just think alot of the time they're all lumped into one category and picked on as a whole, when in reality it's only a small percentage of them (or people pretending to be them) who do/say these things.

The problem is that the ones who get the criticism are the ones who get all the press. There was pretty much only one Baptist denomination that was in favor of the war in Iraq, yet the news feed would have you believe that the consensus among the religous elite of all Christian branches was "yea war."

If they manage to shut all the other branches out of the limelight then it's only fair that they're the only ones who get the rotten fruit thrown at them.
