Tonight marks Purim, where another miracle saved us....once again from genocide. This time it happened in Persia, but luckily since the Queen was Jewish, with a little Jewish kvetching and the miracle of G-d, the evil Haman died a slow and agonizing death....or just got hung, right now i'm too lazy to look at the actual point of this story.

So rather then talk about it's history...i shall explain what we do.

In short...we get drunk...being drunk is a mitzvah tonight...and if you don't know, a mitzvah means it's a good deed to do it. =)

We are supposed to get so drunk, we can't tell the difference between Haman and Mordechai (hero), but people in my area interpert it to being so drunk, you forget your in costume and thus terrorize the local kids.

Basically this holiday is Halloween for Adults. Wear a costume and get drunk. That's really about it...there's lots of food and dancing as well...but who cares. =)

So we can have a little party in this thread i guess. But unless your wearing a costume...you may not post. That is the law!

So without further adieu......come un, have fun shmooze and most importantly get drunk! Anyone sober will be kicked out. ;p

Sorry Keruvalia :D, nah i'm j/k, all can come in. =)

That may be the coolest religious holliday ever. Still not good enough to give up bacon cheeseburgers and crabcakes though.

Hey man ... I'm still as Jewish as anyone else and as Kosher as I wanna be. :D

Although instead of reading the Megilah, we're going to watch Malcolm X. ;)

Incidently, my oldest daughter was born on Purim, so it's her Jewish Birthday as well!

What's on your seudat purim?

It's still Purim tomorrow, too. Sundown to Sundown. The Jewish calendar is lunar - you know, from Creation ... "And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day." (Gen 1:5) Evening first, then morning. :)

Anyway, L'Chaim means "to life" in Hebrew.

??nosh??

It's Yiddish ... it means "a little something" specifically "to nibble on". A light snack, as it were.

actually it means snack.

Although it's generally used when talking about gorging massive quantities of Junk Food

I'm gonna eat so much nosh, that i'm gonna throw up!

I love Yiddish...such a fun language. =D

BTW, i hope your boss ain't Jewish, otherwise he might ask you where you've been and what the story is about. ;)

1. Say you were at a Synagouge, reading the Megillah.
2. tell him "In short, it's about some Persian guy attempting to kill the Jews...again"

Anyways yes, i'm back! =D, although i'm not drunk...i did eat lots of meat. That more then makes up for it...right?

Had some friends over, we watched Malcolm X and read the Megilah. We will read the Megilah again when they wake up. Yes, in keeping with tradition, I had a beer. However, Qur'an says no drunkenness and I was not drunk. :) (picking nits ... I'm such a Jew)

i'm quite jelous, Sanctaphrax, i really miss it myself, and won't be goint this summer :(

I was just wondering how all the Jews around here react to the last part of the megilla. Its essentially a celebration of a vengefull bloodbath, endosred by the king, in response to a planned massacre that never happened. I realize that this story is just that, a story, or a parable, but how is such an ending reconciled with the joyfull celebration that Purim is? This is one of my favorite holidays, but as I was reading megillah today, I was shocked to bits. Thoughts?
