Your favorite city.

Well, I was gonna post this earlier (5:35 AM), but I got too tired... Anyway, post your favorite cities and why you like them. My current fave is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~jhess1/images/pittsburgh/pittsburgh2.jpg

Pittsburgh is a truly beautiful city by any standard, with three rivers (Monongahela, Allegheny, Ohio), many hills, hundreds of bridges, many parks, and a very nice downtown area. Whether it's the food, the people, or just the atmosphere in general, Pitt is one hell of a town.

Potaria, what a gorgeous picture. Pittsburgh is, indeed, a truly, truly beautiful city - and it happens to be my favorite, too. It's such a melting pot of peoples and cultures...just fabulous! Another thing, it's a friendly city...someone always smiling and saying "hello."

Thanks for posting it.

Pittsburgh is a little known gem, in my opinion - I really liked it myself. Luckily, I have family living there, so hope to take advantage of them again in the future :p

I loved the tack of Las Vegas but overall San Francisco is probably the nicest city I've been to in the States - everyone was so laid-back and friendly there.

But still my favourite city is good old Belfast - I've lived here all my life and love the place :)

I would have to say Anchorage, Alaska.

Anchorage is a very beautiful and active city. It has mountain ranges surrounding it, wildlife at every corner. Any where you go you can see the mountains or lakes and the scenery. I love it, it's completely beautiful. If you picture Anchorage as a village, you're wrong. We have tall buildings also, alot of roads and houses, many stores and restraunts. Anchorage is the melting pot of Alaska. There is people from every race here, even in the smallest of buildings there is people who are interesting and from different backgrounds. It's completely awesome.

DC is lovely, I must say!

But Europe... I love Paris! I have never been to Prague, however.

DC is lovely, so long as you're in the Northwest or around the Mall. Go into Southeast or even parts of Northeast, and things get ugly. One of my friend's apartments was in NE. If he wanted to, he could walk three blocks and get all the ho's, smack and illegal firearms he could afford. (Never did, of course, but you couldn't really walk by that corner without being propositioned).

And I've never been to Paris. :) Vienna would be in 3rd.

I have to say, that within the US, Portland, Oregon is my favorite. :). But in Europe (and this is my true favorite, and will always be), my favorite is Stockholm. Adequately named "Venice of the North", there is a truly beautiful place. Not only that, there is plenty of history to be found there.

Europe: Rome

Notable European cities I've spent requisite amounts of time in (to form a somewhat "informed" opinion) are Prague, Paris, and Rome.

I actually loved Modena, but it's not really a "city"... we spent the brunt of our two-week Italian visit in Modena with friends.

There are many cities to which I've never been that I would love to mention... but since it would incorporate unfair bias, I'll simply say that at this point where I'm living right now has been the best. Vancouver, BC is an amazing city - rich with variety as well as things to see and do. Seattle is a close second.

Give me three years, my debt will be gone, and I'll be traveling the world if things go as I wish... then I'll have some more opinion on the matter! ;)

Yayy, Pitt! Use to live just 30 miles or so North of Pittsburgh, back before they cleaned it up. I can remember when the Ohio River was poison and if you left your car outside overnight it would be covered with black aerosols. Pittsburgh is a great example of what a determined populace can do to upgrade their environment.

bah why are people stating a u.s and a Europe one, you only get one favorite city if anything, and bah nothing in America could ever compare to anything in europe, well maybe some of the nicer American cities like San Francisco or Boston to eastern Europe, i don’t know Bratislava, actually that has a castle so no.

Edinburgh, if you don’t agree you.

a. Haven’t been there
b. are wrong, please kill yourself now you don’t deserve another breath of the same air I’m breathing, and do it by droping into a volcano so no one has to waste time burying you.

then maybe Barcelona and Paris, I’m told Prague is lovely though, even after 50 years of communist redecorating. (i.e shell everything then put concrete in its place)

Considering its size compared to other cities of its importance on a global scale (it being rather small) its a very rich city in culture. The scenery is second to none in my opinion and you just can't find a better location. There aren't many things I don't find myself loving about this city. :)

Hell, we don't have that many mosquitos in Austin. We sent them to Houston. And we don't have the humidity either. Plus- I HATE COLD!! It snows every winter up here, and it sucks. Give me the heat. I was born in Houston, and have never lived any further north than San Fran. Don't want to either. That's why I want the Neo-cons out so badly. I don't want to have to move to Canada. :p

The environment wouldn't be much worse if Pitt still had the steel mills, with all the upgrades in technology since the 1970's. There's no doubt in my mind that it would still have far less pollution than Houston.

But other than that, maybe Atlanta, Georgia, I drove through it this summer, huge city to a small time Okie like myself, and to see Turner Field as Braves fan was cool.

In the US I love Cambria. It is an over priced, snobby lefty coastal town but damn the location is beautiful and they have interesting buildings and overpriced shops selling crap you don't need like potpourri.

In Japan I love Kobe. Squeezed between the sea and mountains, you can walk across the city in about forty minutes. From the mountain side the panorama down to the sea is beautiful. Kobe beef baby!! It is not as good as Matsuzaka beef but hell the degree of variation between them is hardly noticable.

In Turkey I loved Cappadocia. Carved cave buildings including restaurants, shops and your own damn house! Need I say more?

Or is 'tal vez' in Spanish

I like French

Je adore should be J'adore.

yes, yes it should.

I only really ever say 'adore' in french when it is "je t'adore" though I ought to have noticed the contraction anyhow.

My french is self-taught so its not perfect just yet.

I'd have to say that Tokyo is my favorite city, followed closely by Stockholm, despite the fact that those two cities are nothing alike. I like Tokyo because I like cities with a lot of energy (like NY or Hong Kong), and Tokyo seems to have the most energy to me. It isn't really a very beautiful city, but it is very vibrant, and I always have lots of fun there. I love Stockholm for all the opposite reasons--it is the most beautiful city I have ever seen, and it is very historic and fairly clean. So, I want to live in Tokyo while I'm young, but I could easily see myself moving to Stockholm once I get older.

I have to add San Diego to my favorite city list. I have never seen a more beautiful place, especially when on the beaches - and the sky was glorious, every day. I felt like I was in Paradise. Cape Cod (Martha's Vineyard) would be my next pick. Oh. I guess I have too many favorites.

Its nice but what about the nuke plant right on the edge of it? :(

Really? That's what it is?

My problem is that you, for some reason, had to put him down for liking Portland. I don't like it, either, but notice that I didn't act like an asshole about it.

Tokyo is definitely a place I wanna visit when I get older. It's not just the largest city in the world (33,000,000+!), it's the most vibrant, as you said.

Kobe is a place I have to go at least once.

In Turkey I loved Cappadocia. Carved cave buildings including restaurants, shops and your own damn house! Need I say more?
More of a region, surely? But with a couple of underground cities and a whole town carved into a single rock. Amazing place, I agree.

Montreal and Toronto are close to my heart for different reasons.

Paris was fun, although I found the French a bit to smug there and snobbish (I don't have an accent, you do! And yes, I do use old French words), but Besançon was friendly.

Port-au-Prince was an amazing revelation for a spoiled North American like me, despite the violence. It was my first international trip anywhere.

If I had to move, Canmore, Alberta, at the foot of the Rockies.

Montreal and Toronto I'll give you for sure...

Paris, I can only Imagine is wonderful... and if you liked Besançon you should really read Le Rouge et Le Noir, by Stenshal (one of my favorite books!)...

Port-au-Prince looks beautiful, though perhaps a little bit too much turmoil for me...

Canmore though... really? Im surprised to see that mentioned! Its in one of the most beautiful areas of the Rockies without a doubt... and the sense of grandeur would floor most people... but I just couldnt ever see myself in such a place! Hmm, I have to give it to you... an interesting choice! :)

I love architecture and the tow cities in the us that have the best architecture are Chicago and Seattle. I like seattle better because of how pristene an environment it has but I also love the placement of Chicago. in my book its a tie. The best city outside the US has to be Berlin. Germany is the most progressive country in Europe and they have such a great culture. i would love to spend a couple of years there if I ever got the chance again

It's the glass-blowers' shop that blew me away. I'd go there just to learn the craft, surrounded by those majestic mountains... I'm going back this summer.

As for Port-au-Prince, I was a guest of an employee of CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency), something like 15 years ago. Altough we had an armed guard at the door, and we got set upon by a crowd of people doing what we think was a voodoo ceremony in the middle of the night, the trip was amazing, the people were friendly. The only thing that sometimes got on my nerves was the overprotectiveness of my five male companions...

Whether it's the food, the people, or just the atmosphere in general, Pitt is one hell of a town.
you forgot to mention the bad things about it.
1-the eternally grey sky (unless its night)
2-you can't walk anywhere if you're a smoker because of all the hills
3-we have 2 seasons (football and road construction)
4-the people (i generally find that they hate me)
5-no clubs for bands to play ay (its either sell out an ampitheatre or play in a dive bar)
6-the mullet is in fashion here

my pick for fave city goes to salem, massachusetts. i just love that place. :)

Going through Pitt on my way to New York, the sky was much clearer than it is here in Houston. It certainly wasn't grey!

I don't smoke, and I love hills :D.

I love Football, and Pitt certainly doesn't have as much road construction as Houston. No city has as much road construction as Houston! It's sickening!!

They may hate you, but they seemed nice to me.

If I decided to start a band, I'm sure I'd manage.

I support the OP's choice of Pittsburgh- It holds Mike, has good Italian food, it's a defensible position (with all the rivers & mountains and stuff), and (except during the winter) has weather I agree with.

LA comes in second- Korean Barbeque manages to beat out being the city who holds the only man who's held my attention more than a few months, but it's $20-28/plate, and (even in certain parts of winter), it's unbearably hot. Also, Long Beach has a radio station that seems to play 50% Sublime.

Worst- El Paso- There is NOTHING. It's walking distance from Juarez, Mexico, but that's kinda a shithole, too. It's four hours from anywhere you could call civilization, and UTEP throws almost nonexistant parties.
