Self-imposed ignorance and Imax films

Drunk commies reborn
24-03-2005, 20:02
So an Imax film about volcanos that mentions evolution when it discusses the flora and fauna that live around deep sea volcano openings is being banned by Imax theaters in Texas, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The reason given is that it may offend the creationists in the area.

Apparently creationists get so angry at the mention of evolution that they will boycott any educational film that mentions it even in passing. We're doomed as a nation.

Willful ignorance is sort of an unbeatable foe. I mean, have you ever gotten into an argument with a flat earther?

If they wanna sue the profs in Florida, fuck 'em. They don't like science in Texas and Georgia? Fuck 'em. Let 'em stew in their own stupid sauce. Let 'em turn their public schools into moron factories. Let 'em screen "Dude, Where's My Car" at the Imax. Just so long as none of this stuff goes federal, I can't really see a problem.

You'll just have to build a home cinema then and invite friends and family for banned screenings!! :D

A clockwork Orance has only been shown in the UK since Kubrick(sp?) died. it wasnt that great a film but the hype because it was banned made it something special here. I'll bet americans dont have the same view of it as the british do.

Banning something can sometimes be a good thing.

Well, they'll become colonies quick enough. The folks who love movies about volcanoes more than they hate evolution are apparently in the minority. They can either get on the evolution-hating bandwagon, or they can move. I'm sure the profs at FSU, once they get tired of getting sued, can find homes at other universities around the country. Improves my job choices ... but think of all the people that WANT to learn that get caught under the trap of them ... all the other peoples in thoes schools and such

By college, I don't care. By that age, students are growed-up enough to make their own dumb decisions. If they sign up for the Ezekiel Jeremiah Jones Institute of Theological Technology, they get what they deserve.

For younger kids, I don't care. If their parents are willing to go to great lengths to ban Imax flicks or put ID in science classes, there are countless other ways in which they're going to fuck up their kids. The kids will sink or swim on their own. Parents who don't sign on for this agenda need to recognize they're fighting the tide. They can move, find alternative schooling, or drive across state lines to watch volcano movies.

They havent banned anything, they are simply choosing not to carry that film. They are a business and businesses are in it to make money. A film that is expected not to sell very well will be passed up in favor of a movie that will. If you wanna complain about movies that Imax theaters chose not to carry, why not complain about Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: the Imax experience and Spiderman 2: the Imax experience. I care much more about the fact that so few Imax theaters carried those films than I do about a documentary on volcanos.

Depends on where the theatres are located, I suppose. Metropolitan areas tend to be a bit low on creationists, per capita, no matter where you are in the United States.

I'll grant that the term 'banned' is mis-applied, and that's frustrating when that happens. That happens a lot, when some group makes a voluntary choice based on what they anticipate might happen we often react as if what they anticipated had actually happened and say 'banned' when that is not actually the case.

That being said-this is still very reminiscent of early film codes that lead to the Hayes Commission that brought us couples sleeping in seperate beds, etc. Each state, led largely by the Catholic Decency League (or some such arrangement of those words) started censoring films that where to be shown. There had been a ruling that films where not protected speech. To restore that status they started a volunteer censorship that was the Hayes code and later evolved into the rating system we have now (after people became irratated that movies like The Bicycle Thief wouldn't be shown because a kid pees on a wall...)

Now, we've skipped a phase because film is regarded as protected speech. However, we've moved right into the self-censorship. The idea that in those areas creationists have such sway that they will drastically effect the movies success. That is disturbing. (Are creationists really part of the film documentary crowd? That seems a little jumpy to me...)

Now to be rude and demeaning-Why in the hell are we giving this much creedence to the flat-earthers? They want to believe a sky wizard waved a hand and "poof" there was earth, fine. (I've never seen them settle on which order of creation is correct, Gen Ch. 1 or 2, I mean, if they're going to be literalists....) If they want to believe that fairies flit about every morning and open the flowers, fantastic. The rest of us would like to get on with our damn lives with out having to believe that meat left out will create rats etc. Good Gravy-there is no part of the evolution theory that precludes the process from being set-up by the sky wizard (but thats a seperate non-science issue, don't conflate the two) if you really need him her them it then it's not my place to take that from you. BUT-damn. I'll just stop...

Fundamentalist. Now there's a vague term. I'm a fundamentalist when it comes to Jesus. But I'm not going to toss science out.

The usual division I make is that religion is a good guide for my spiritual needs, and my personal life. And science is not good for spiritual needs, and no help at all with my personal life. It's good for other things.

No, it isnt reminiscent of anything. Nobody has censored anything, they simply chose not to carry that particular movie because they dont feel its one that would appeal to their target audience. Thats all there is to it. Its a case of the most important principle of marketing being put into action, know your audience. They know what appeals to their audience and what doesnt and they make choices based on that, it would be stupid to do otherwise. There are plenty of Imax movies available and they didnt choose that one because other ones will sell better. Thats not a case of censorship, its a case of marketing. There is no similarity to any case of censorship. This was a simple every day marketing decision. Every time they are gonna change movies they choose from a list and there are movies that do not get selected. Frankly, I care more about the good movies that dont get selected (Star Wars episode 2, Matrix: reloaded, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Spider Man 2, and Apollo 13 are all available on Imax format) than I do about a documentary on volcanos.
