Sugar Shock

Have you ever paid any attention to how much sugar you eat? Sugar, the amazing commodity, has some how sneaked its way into nearly everything you eat. Seriously, it’s incredible! Here’s a partial list of added sweeteners:

• Corn Syrup
• Dextrose
• Disaccharides
• Evaporated Cane Juice
• Fructooligosaccharides
• Glycerides
• Glycerine
• High-fructose corn syrup
• Malted Barley
• Maltodextrin
• Maltose
• Monoglycerides
• Monosaccharides
• Raisin Concentrate
• Rice Syrup solids
• Sorbitol (a sugar alcohol)
• Sucanat (evaporated sugar cane juice)
• Sucrose
• Sugar
• White grape juice concentrate

Check out food labels you will be amazed. Sugars make an appearance in the most unlikely things and in quantities that are absolutely ridiculous. For example, (in most catsups) in a tablespoon of catsup there is a teaspoon of sugar. Commercially made fries are dipped into a dextrose solution before frying. In light of the recent threads in which health and diet have been a concern, I encourage you to respond. I’m especially interested in posts made by those who can’t eat sugars, or have to watch their diet closely.

I'm not worried about it.

Import Belgian fries. They're the only kind worth eating anyway.

It predisposes you to lots of cardiovascular diseases. I don't know, I would be a little concerned.

Bah, I eat what tastes good. I'm not gonna eat cardboard just so I can live to be 300...

I eat a moderately-heavy amount of sugar each day, but bear in mind that I also lift weights and exercise. I also jump around a lot (the pogo really gives your legs one hell of a workout!).

Obviously I *would* exercise, but I'm too unfit and would probably die if I tried.

I'm not obese or anything (9 stone, woo!) but I have no stamina (stop giggling in the back there) and no upper body strength, so about all the exercise I can do is walk, which I do do when I need to get somewhere.

Please explain to us non-Europeans what "9 stone" is.

It's not the sugar that I eat that's the problem. It's all the sugar I drink. I start each day out with a couple cups of heavily sweetened tea, then drink about a six-pack of coke a day.

ONLY a six-pack? Get out of the house and buy more! Drink, drink, drink!

9 stone is... urm... not that much really, don't understand pounds or kilos though, sorry.

I loved saying monosaccharides in biology. Polymerase, too. :)

My diet basically consists of sugar (from Coke Cola and occasionally chocolate chip cookies and doughnuts), caffeine (Coke Cola and coffee) and starch (potato cakes, potato chips).

I'm going to be so totally buggered when my metabolism dies.

I dunno, I might like a slower metabolism. I have a raging one that requires me to eat virtually all-day long.

MOderate I would think. Probably more than doctors 'acceptable' level.

But I stay off sweet drinks, sweets, and sweet food. But by consuming normal fruits and normal stuff, should be quite abit somehow in the process.

I don't know exactly how much sugar I consume, so I simply chose "moderate"
