Gay Marraige Ban Great for Gays

Can't find a link to this story, but some industrious gays are using bans to their advantage. Ohio, for example, has the toughest ban on gay marraige in the US. No problem for one lesbian. A few years ago, she had a baby through artificial insemiination, and shared that child with her partner. A few years later, they divorced. Now, the birth mother is challenging her ex partner in court over the other woman's right to joint custody. As she was never legally married, she argued, she is the only one entitled to custody for her child. She won.
I find it rather cute, myself: a gay marraige ban working for gays.

Well, working for one side, anyway. I still find it ridiculous that we have such anti-civil rights laws.

If Ohio has the toughest anti-gay legislation anywhere, how did the lesbians get married? I'm not clear on this part.

Legally, they didn't. However, they considered themselves married in a moral sense.

As in ironnnic. Something that makes one laugh about the irony as well. Some people are just too serious on the matter.

It all depends on how many slack-jawed, drooling rednecks show up to "Difend wuts raht" when the law is challenged.

Ein Deutscher']And how can one anti-gay-marriage law be tougher than another?
Because they vary state by state. Some bans just ban marraige. Some ban civil unions. Ohio tries to go as far as to even ban the intention of gay marraige (whatever that means).

Ohio's not a redneck state. It is a rustbelt state.

Well, there are different degrees of non-acceptance.

In Alabama, the legal age for sexual relations between a male and female is 14, but there is no legal age for sexual relations between two males or two females... meaning that homosexuality in general is "illegal", in a sense.

"Welcome to Bamalama. Grab a fiddle and do-si-do!" :p

I call Ohio the "South of the North". And in some cases, it's harder on civil rights than most Southern states are.

Certain areas are, of course. Cleveland is pretty liberal socially. As for the rest of the state, I've never been there. I can't say how it is. But I do know that most of the towns are recovering industrial towns, and blue-collar workers tend to be socially conservative.

It's "working" for one gay woman, it's not "working" for the other gay woman.

Thus, it's not "working for gays", it's "working" for one bitch who's bitter enough to not let the other parent see the child, by using oppressive laws against her.

Really, Mystic, you need to think before you write.

Some people do not find injustice and oppression funny or "cute."

It is sad that you do.

Yesterday a rebellion of over 5000 people rose up in our southern teritory and killed over 500 of our troops. This was in response to a large round up by our secret police who found that the assisan club was planing to kill our wise leader, RWW, (according to goverment regulations no one can print or say his real name in public.) so the secret polive rounded up 200 of them at a small farm outside of Brandik village and began to read them their rights next thing we knew the club members started beating up the guards so our snipers shot them all then the surviveing guards killed any survivors as is customary in Licknia after someone commits a crime. rebels are now attacking the fortified position and our elite snipers and combat units are attacking and killing them everywhere they are. LICKNIA ASKS THE WORLD TO SEND TROOPS TO PUT DOWN THIS REBELLION IMMEDATLY. (OUR REGION BANS ALL HALP CLAS WEAPONS ONLY WEAPONS THAT EXSIT IN THE REAL WORLD, TODAY) thanks

So, how am I incorrect? If you mean that this affects me, it doesn't. I don't live in Ohio, I don't know this woman, and I'm not gay. Besides, I don't think it is oppression so much as it is irony.

um, you do realize that BOTH people in that relationship were gay, right? so it makes no sense at all to claim this ban "works for gays." not to mention that crowing over how a gay marriage ban can contribute to the already traumatic experience of a divorce is pretty disgusting...think about the poor kid in question! if the kid's parents had been allowed to legally marry, this situation would have been resolved far more legally and justly, but instead the child gets to lose even more than a child normally would during a divorce.

frankly, i'm pretty disgusted if this is an example of what the "family values" crowd has to say.

I'm actually not a member of that "crowd". I am personally apathetic on the subject of gay marraige, or marraige in general. So trouble in marraige makes me laugh, because it always results in the funniest and stupidest legal battles. Gays add a new dimesion. If polygamy makes a comeback, that will be far more interesting.

It's ridiculous that denying civil rights is cloaked under "family values". If those who invoked this term actually cared about "family values" they would see that gay/lesbian parents can raise children equally as well as any straight couple.

I'd occasionally like to look inside someone else's head and see how their thought process works. Often, short references and small relations in a person's head can make fascinating leaps that cannot be reproduced without hours of work.

And sometimes, they just say something that makes absolutely no sense, and it's the only alternative to saying "what the fuck?"

Plus, it seemed that if there were more republicans in the area than democrats,or if they had a Kerry/Edwards sign the family values also didn't apply to them either....

Well, no. Just an opinionated person who believes that families are overrated. I, for example, grew up with a single mother. My father was absent, as he died shortly after I was born.
