What music and movies did you grow up on as a little kid?

I was growing up in the days of Lion King and Aladdin, both of which are brilliant!

I used to fart on about how kids movies weren't the same these days until I saw Shrek and The Incredibles. Both very funny, with multiple levels built in (A good kids movie is one the parents can watch without being bored stiff!)

What movies did you love as a child? TV shows? Music?

It should be illegal to kick as much ass the Incredibles does.

I grew up with same movies you did. :)

For TV? I grew up on Seinfeld, Frasier, and Friends.

Movies? Hard to say... I've seen so many, but my most memorable ones are Aladdin, True Lies, and the rereleased Star Wars Trilogy.

Music? Well, that's another tough one. I heard the Sex Pistols back in 1991, some Ramones back in 1992 and 1994, Green Day that same year (Dookie), and a lot of miscellaneous stuff in between then and now. I didn't start really listening to music up until 2001.

Oh, as for music, I definetely grew up with classic rock, my dad used to blare it all the time. I still love the old stuff, but now I'm into punkish-alternative rock and some rap, too. Country ain't bad, either.

The radio stations suck in Alabama, so up until about 8 years old, I only listened to my parent's stuff...

Which was 80's metal, hard rock, etc. and R&B, blues, jazz... My favorite songs (which I HAD to play before I could go to sleep at night) were "No Respect", "All You Need Is Rock 'N' Roll", etc. I knew an 80s rock band or artist for every letter of the alphabet BEFORE I knew the alphabet song! :p

At 8 and 9 I bought into the fads, you know, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, all that crap. Not Britney Spears, though. I never could stand her, even in my pop phase.

Of course, I have heard "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd played so many friggin' times I am immensely predjudiced against country music of any sort.

As far as TV goes, I grew up on Barney, Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, Arthur, (I even entered a contest where I wrote an episode for the series. I wasn't selected, but it was pretty cool anyway.) Power Rangers, Pappy Land... oh, the list goes on and on. Mostly Edutainment, tho.

Movies? Every disney classic 'xept maybe Fantasia, Barney, Power Rangers, Magic School Bus... you get the idea.

As I got a little older I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dark Angel, and La Femme Nikita with my family all together. Go, me!

And "Southern Rock" is mostly country, which is crap.

Which of course is mostly opinion ;)

Older country is crap, the new country, which is more pop-ish, is decent.

And Sweet Home Alabama kicked ass the first 1000 times I heard it. Now it gets annoying.

Well, for me, it stopped kicking ass 10, 12 years ago.

And Southern rock, in my opinion, is country. It's county rock. COUNTRY!

I totally agree that country is crap, possibly even more craptastic than bubblegum pop.

I didn't listen to music as a kid, just what my family listened to. I guess John Denver reminds me of some of the happiest moments of my childhood.

As far as movies go I watched unusual ones for a kid. In elementary school my favorite movies were:

Patton
Zulu
The Longest Day
Tora Tora Tora
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
1776
South Pacific
A Bridge Too Far

In Junior High:

Apocalypse Now
Cross of Iron
The Wild Bunch
Blade Runner
Star Trek The Wrath of Kahn

I watched Cross of Iron when I was in the 6th grade. My father rented it not knowing its content. Loads of violence and an oral rape followed by bitten off penis scene. I remember clearly that as soon as the film ended he looked at me and said, " I probably shouldn't have let you watch that movie." I was enthraled by the film and wouldn't shut up about it at school for a week.

Great thread idea...

Movies-I stood in line with my parents at the Arden Fair domes which are no longer there to watch Star Wars in the theater at the age of six. I didn't know why where there or what all the fuss was until the movie started. I fell in love and haven't fallen out since.

Outside of that the movies I remember are:Sword and the Sorceress for being the movie that my friends mom didn't realize little kids shouldn't see-mmmm, naked people.

Porky's for the forbiden fruit. Stupid ass movie, really...

Barbarian Queen-practically a porno that the video store down the street would let me rent because they didn't know...Hey man, it was puberty...

Megaforce-it was like a live action G.I. Joe, so that was cool.

Gymkata-the Skill of Gymnastics, the Kill of Karate....in 1984 two things ruled, gymnastics and ninja movies. Some genius combined the two.

American Ninja- My first introduction into the fantasy that without you remembering at one point in your life you where trained to be a badass and you just need the situation to come up where you 'reflex' into your badass skills. Sure beats having to do all that work now...

Iron Eagle-We had three airforce bases around us, which seemed excessive (and yet, when they shut down one everyone freaked...) so as a kid things like the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels seemed cool. Again, the instant badass fantasy, that I could just be plopped into something and be the best with some nudging from Lous Gosset Jr....

Six Pack w/Kenny Rogers. It was about kids and racing, I was a kid who raced.

Beat Street, Breakin', Rappin', Krush Groove-I think, since I'm being long winded I'll make seperate posts for music and TV, but when music comes around that'll make a lot of sense.

Highlander- Dude, they're fighting with swords, but its right now!!! Sword fighting in a parking garage, how cool is that??? To a kid, extra cool.

Rescuers(sp?)-Only Disney movie I saw. Not even sure it is a Disney movie...

Secret of N.I.M.H., The Last Unicorn, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings-those where my animated fare. On T.V. I loved Rikki Tikki Tavi

Seven Minutes in Heaven, Labyrinth gave me a Jennifer Connely 'thing,' then Requiem for a Dream made it all dirty......

Car Wash- I loved that movie. Watching it again I wonder what I liked because I cound't have understood most of the jokes.

Blazing Saddles- Same story really-though it doesn't take much to 'get' a fart joke.

Young Frankenstien- Again...

Flash Gordon-FLASH! AAA-AAAAAaaaaah! He'll save everyoneofus!!!

Xanadau- hehehehehehehehehehehehe. I don't know why. But it'd be disengious for me to deny having watched that several times. I won't defend it, but there it is...

That's more than enough really, but I could go on and on...(as you probably can tell....)

E.T.

Disney-Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and the rest of the gang-Very old film, It was from the WWII era I think or around that time and also their old shows, very funny.

A-Team

Colombo

Etc.

I was born 1984 and those films and shows were old then, just goes to show the lifespan of a good film.

Okay, so music.

When I was a kid I was, like most kids, subject to the collections of my parents and what my 'cool' uncle would give me. From that period I remember a few things:

The Hobbit- Don't know how I got that record but I listen the hell out of it.

Sesame Disco- Look, I loved the Muppets....

Unidentified Steely Dan single- Don't know what it was, but I had it, so I listened to it.

Jesus Christ Superstar- What's the Buzz was pretty funky to me. I actually had a friend whose parents told him he was forbiden to listen to that album at my house...

Meet the Beatles- Moms.

Some variety album, minstrals or something or other. Sketches that I had convinced myself where funny. I think that somewhere on there was Take Five by the Dave Bruebeck Quartet and I was hypnotised by it. A-Train as well.

1700 Peter, Paul, and Mary...dad....

Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Brazil '66...also dads

Herbie Mann dads again. Dad was into folk and latin jazz. And he grew up in Willits, part of the 'Emerald Triangle'...I think he smoked pot but just won't tell us...

ZeBop Santana...cool uncle
[edit]d'oh, forgot other cool uncle selections-Judas Priest Screaming for Vengence, Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon,[/edit

Six Pack Soundtrack Kenny Rogers....see my movie list...

Pac-Man Fever- I had it. What?

I also remember liking a song called Cottonmouth and the song Convoy...which set up a little revolution...

At a friends in the middle of the night barely recieving a signal from a Bay Area college radio station we where introduced to rap. Dug it.

Whodini- Five Minutes of Funk, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash (who I finally saw live a few years ago), Egyptian Lover, Africa Bambatta, Herbie Hancock (huh? Rock-it, you knew that...), DST (Herbie's DJ), Jonsun Crew, Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, can't remember the guys who did that "wiki wiki wiki" song, Fat Boys...I could go on but I'm gonna get enough crap for that anyway...

Right around the time that N.W.A. came out I discovered jazz, didn't look back. I still respect it, just don't listen to it much. Or at all.

Not to say my early jazz listening was all that great.

Pat Metheny- Last Train Home

Chuck Mangione- Feels So Good

Spyro Gyra- These guys killed it. I went to a concert and it sounded pretty much like the albums, even in that early understanding, I felt that that wasn't jazz. Especially after I saw Frank Foster with the 'Count Basie' Orchestra (Count had long been dead, I don't know how legit that claim could really be) and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band...which I still listen to to this day.

I don't have time to do a complete list right now, so I''ll post a couple teasers... (some of these only the Canadian crowd will know or appreciate, but hey! I loves em just the same!)

My favorite movie of all time, The Fox and the Hound - without question. Hell, I still have the sheets, pillow cases and matching blanket in my closet!
Don't judge me!!

TV shows I couldnt live without: Fraggle Rock, The Racoons, Smurfs, A-Team, Magnum PI (I met Tom Selleck last summer at a party! Coolest most down to earth guy ever!!), Beachcombers, MacGyver

Music I loved and still find myself loving: Social Distortion (Mike Ness was my hero!), Bad Religion, Steve Earle and the Dukes, NOFX, Merle Haggard, Sublime (at the start of the nineties, before most people had even heard of them), Quiet Riot, BOC, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister (hey, back in the day this was some cooool shit) and so on, and so on

I will try and post a more definitive list later... this thread ROCKS!!! :)

Cartoons: My Little Pony (the 'and friends' series, back when there were still bad guys and evil characters. None of that bullshitty 'Tales' bullshit. If I wanted pathetic teenage drama I'd have dropped by my local highschool).
Count Duckula (love. So much love. Just started trying to get ahold of all the old episodes now. If only they'd bring them out on DVD... come on, 80s revival! Don't fail me now!)
The Wuzzles (I only remember two episodes, but they were still amusingly silly)
Gummy Bears
Inspector Gadget (I pity anyone who didn't grow up with Gadget... Claw's white kitty was just the best)
The Smurfs

TV: The Simpsons
Keeping Up Appearances
Fawlty Towers (own in on DVD, know by heart. Will slap anyone who hasn't seen it. Best ever.
Mother and Son (yay! Non-sucky Australian comedy!)

So, I really should go to bed, but TV:

My T.V. viewing was formed mostly by a lack of local cable for quite some time. A friend had HBO where I watched Thunderbirds, which I thought ruled.

Mostly it was reruns where I was allowed control of the T.V., so I watched syndicated sitcoms from 'just before my time,' like,

One Day at a Time- Snider, you sly dog you....

The one about the guy who drew a comic strip with a cow puppet...

Mary Tyler Moore Show- I think Mary Tyler Moore is hot...which fed me watching...

The Dick Van Dyke Show She's hot, dammit...

Andy Griffith You should all watch Face in the Crowd...really, do it. I'll wait....

Good Times and What's Happenin'

Sanford and Son- "It's the big one, I'm comin' to join ya!"

The (Bob) (Newhart) Show- in all its itterations....

The Carol Burnett Show- I liked Tim Conway. I couldn't tell you why, I just did.

Hee Haw...shutup...I mentioned the 'no cable,' right?

That Barbara Mandrell thing with Syd and Marty Kroft puppets-for that matter,

Just about anything Syd & Marty Kroft did-Land of the Lost (ruled-Sleestacks are scary, man), H.R. Puffenstuff (thats my 'gateway' drug...), Dr. Shrinker (Jim Nabors...grew up a racing fan so I knew him as the 'guy who sang that Indiana song before the 500...), Elctro Woman and Dyno Girl, Shazam!!, that one where the crappy dune buggy turned into a flying dune buggy which is probably why I want a dune buggy so bad..., Segmund & the Sea Monster, and The Bugaloos-I had a thing for the girl bugaloo...

I also dug The Monkees, Partridge Family, and Batman. I even remember the massively ill-concieved live action Justice League...so bad...

Cartoons where-
Robotech, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man, Voltron
Some less than glorious 'toons from when Saturday morning ruled-
Dungeons & Dragons, Rubic the Amazing Cube (I swear I didn't make that up...), Pac-Man (did I mention that I had the fever?), Mr. T, Hammerman, Superfriends, Spiderman and his Amazing Friends, Snorks- the cheap Smurf rip off underwater...Fish Police for the second and a half it was on...some things I can't remember because it's late.

Later TV was dominated by Early Eighties Action-
A-Team, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, Manimal, Ottoman, Street Hawk or something like that, Knight Rider on a motorcycle, Air Wolf, Blue Thunder, Riptide, Magnum P.I., Houston, Hawaii Five-Oh (in reruns), really anything that was based around a vehicle, which there was a lot to choose from...Buck Rogers, Battlestar Gallactica, V, Beauty and the Beast...look, everyone was watching that-I don't know why...

I think after admiting you watched Beauty and the Beast you should stop for a moment and think about what I'd be if I'd spent that time doing anything else....sniffle.....

If I chose the right one it might make them question their sanity...

As a little kid I wasn't into music, but I liked movies. Mostly horror movies like Friday the 13th, Exorcist, Poltergeist, etc. Also liked Star Wars.

Robotech, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man, Voltron

How can you post a list of this caliber without adding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the greatest TV show of all time, ever (not that new space age crap with crazy super-powered turtles))?

I didn't mind when I was little, but once I got a bit older it started to get on my nerves a bit.

One of my friends was a certified "Jesus Freak". He always tried to convert me, and he did it so much that I finally had to say some "choice" words to him. It wasn't just once or twice every month... It was an hour EVERY TIME HE CAME OVER TO MY HOUSE!!!

It bothered the hell out of me, and as we got older, he realised that what he was doing was ridiculous, and he turned down his religion. It had ruined his childhood, and he wasn't too happy about it.

What movies did you love as a child? TV shows? Music?

I can remember "The Yellow Submarine", listening to Jimi Hendrix(though he was gone by '70), Gilligan's Island.

Want to make that shame even worse? I was a Ninja Turtle. I was paid to go to birthday parties and picnics and other nonsense as anyone of the Ninja Turtles (and other characters, but really-mostly the Turtles). I couldn't tell you how that skipped out, except maybe that by the time that came really popular I was already old enough to do it as a job. Thats' the excuse I'll go with.

Weeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllll......................
10 and earlier
Music: TONS of Country. Country rocks, in the sort of way that only a non-rock genre can rock.

TV: I was raised on Fox. Watched Emergency 911, Sportscenter, and CNN while I ate my cereal in the morning. Pokemon and Digimon on Saturdays. Transformers were ranked pretty high up there too.

Movies: Star Wars, Transformers, the whole Land Before Time series, both American Tail movies (Fievel is the awesomest Russian mouse that ever lived), and the Great Mouse Detective.

When I was little there was this show called Emergency about fire paramedics. I liked it becuase I had the truck they used as a Hot Wheel. Or I had the Hot Wheel because I liked that show. When you're a kid 'cause and effect' can get turned around a little....

Ooooh! And S.W.A.T., had a Hot Wheel of that, too. It was the time when T.V. was riddled with shows about public sevices jobs. A-aparantly. And Hot Wheels...

OMG! I used to watch MacGyver too!!!! My mum used to think Richard Dean Andersen is hot, and now we watch him on Stargate!!!

I, too, dug the hell out of MacGyver. It might be what made me think there was nothing wrong with a mullet (a hair style so offensive my own hair went on strike, "If that's what you're going to do with hair, you get none...." sniffle)

It was liking watching Mr. Wizard, but with bad guys...
