The attitude to this American case absolutely disgusts me.

I think that the media and government intervention in her case is an invasion of privacy.

What is even more disgusting is that this apparently vegetated woman has been reduced to being a political football to be kicked around between Republicans and Democrats.

Shame on you all.

Flame away.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said, Swimmingpool. But, is it not everyone's right to give their opinion? I know there's a lot of threads on this board regarding the case but - they all approached the issue in a different manner.

Freedom of speech, you know.

Nothing about this board is protected by freedom of speech. Its a forum hosted on a private network, and as such we can say only what the mods want us to be able to say. There are not rights here, only privileges.

I hate when certain topics get chewed up by the world like that, become "issues" to be debated by "ists" who believe in "isms" while carrying cards and developing slogans. Blah. But it always happens, it's apparently a part of free speech (the concept, of people freely talking about whatever they're into, not the legal reality which is fuzzy at best online), frankly I didn't even know who Schiavo was until I saw this post and you mentioned vegetative and I remembered some picture from a few days ago in the news. But I hate when people get all... I dunno... gossippy. Celebrity gossip. Gossip.

I guess you are right. I never thought of it that way.

It is up to Shiavo's family and the court system to make the decision. The governments involvement is appaling and unessacary. If they take on one individual how are they to handle larger cases, or even more pressing matters at hand. I personally think it is an American diversian to draw attention away from healthcare, gay marriage, and war issues. George W. Bush and Congress, I'd like to tell you its a feeble attempt...

Exactly. That's why people get banned for doing things that they aren't supposed to.

Very likely. This is particularly pathetic when you consider that all the ruckus over gay marriage is itself a diversion to the really important issues.

You realize that by creating this thread you are feeding the very issue that you dispise so much, yes?

Just thought you should know.

As sad as I am to say this, it is a good thing that Terri Schaivo's case came up when it did. It gives the US another point to debate, and as you know, we Americans love doing that. So at the very least, tolerate the threads. They are the developement of a nation that is still pretty young.

The issues raised by this case are important ones and I for one intend to discuss it. If you don't like it, no one is going to make you read the threads. Get over it.

One of the things mods don't like to do is restrict the legitimate topics being discussed. The Schiavo case is very much in the forefront of US politics and religion right now, especially now that the federal government has taken an interest.

While I too would prefer to see fewer threads started on the subject, it's a legitimate issue that hits close to home in a whole bunch of different ways (not just life rights, but also the power of governments, judges, and medical people). So if people keep making topics with different approaches and responding with different angles and options, that's fine by me.
