Religious Extremists!

On the way back from Karting today, we found the motorway blocked, and police cars everywhere. We decided to drive on, and drove to the next entrance instead, where it was open. The amount of police cars had us believing the worst (i.e suicide bombing).
The real cause? Settlers tried, and in some cases succeeded, to block major junctions all over Israel today, including Gelilot (by the biggest cinema in Israel) and Poleg (big big mall). They placed tires across the roads, and just generally tried to cause havoc. I have no idea what they're playing at, as this is definitely not gaining them any sympathy from the Israeli public. I lost any respect I may have had for them today, and I assume many other people feel the same way.

Oooh ... tires across the road. We used to do that sort of thing in High School as pranks. I'd say mostly harmless as tires don't make good explosives.

Did you pick one of the main roads in the state? Set fire to the tires and stand there, refusing to move? Cause the entire area police to be called in to remove you?
Also, they blocked this motorway during rush hour.

Wait, and the settlers did this? I thought they were winning. What have they got to protest?

Good point. Reclaiming public space, or blocking traffic to make a point is used by many groups, not just extremists.

Nowhere in the article does it state that these people were religious extremists. It mentions that they were "anti-disengagement" and that the protest was "right-wing".
Do you have contrary information, Sanctaphrax?

What better time to get attention. Did they harm anyone? It's a standard action to get attention and publicity.

RPP, first of all the only ones against pulling out are the religious, because Israel needs to be whole, including YSA etc.... and also, Galgalatz, or Army Radio, confirmed it was settlers.
Sinuhue, they live in a democracy, you can't just get together and block the second biggest road in Israel. You need permission to hold a protest. Besides, if it helps mold your opinion at all, these people also slash army cars for fun, the cars of the same people who are the only reason the settlers are still alive and not swamped by angry arabs from the village next door.

Oh and read the article again, on the first line. "Police on Tuesday evening detained 66 settlers" settlers=religious extremists.

The great thing about a democracy is that sometimes not having a permit is still okay. You can be fined, but you still have the right to protest. By the way, plenty of dictatorships have 'permits for protest' too.

I think the point most people here are making is that this isn't a religious extremist action per se, and it's a hell of a lot better than killing people.

These people do plenty of that as well, need I remind you of Igal Amir? (Killed Itzhak Rabin)
In my opinion, blocking off a main motorway during rush hour and causing the entire regional police force to be called out, when frankly they probably have much more important things to do, is wrong. There was absolute chaos on the roads because of these people. I agree protests can be non-permitted. Take for example Fathers 4 Justice, the guys who dress up as superheroes. Full credit to them, they protest, and after a while, they leave of their own accord. I just can't see the settlers doing that.

Take it from someone who lives here, these people are a crowd of idiots, rather than idiots in a crowd.

LOL. I take your word for it!

Settlers, they're the guys that say "I don't care if this 10 metre square of rocky desert is the only thing you own, I'm going to build a house on it anyway, and put armed guards all around it" aren't they?
Who'd've thought they'd turn out to be into totally fucking up your day just to make a point?

Yes, YOU have Right's just as I HAVE...
One of MY Rights is the ability to move about Freely in Public without interference...
So please explain where YOU believe you have some Right to interfere in that Right, just because YOU want to protest something?
There are idiots in every crowd. I think the point most people here are making is that this isn't a religious extremist action per se, and it's a hell of a lot better than killing people.
So it's ok to "Break the Law", in your mind, as long as no one DIES?!?!
So YOU recognize MY Right to LIVE, but none of the rest?
Because I will surely back you in YOUR Right to protest, as long as that Protest does not infringe on SOMEONE ELSE'S Right's.

Gaar

Good points there Urantia!
I'll admit to being biased against these people, as I believe they are now the obstacle to peace, along with Hamas, Al Aqsa and co, but still, doing stuff like this should get them arrested. Frankly, I hope they get a nice year in jail, preferably an arab jail. Within a year the disengagement will be complete, and the arab terrorists will be fighting it out with the settlers inside a jail.
