War of the Worlds Remake

War of the World's remake by Steven Spielberg which stars Tom Cruise is coming out June 29. I just got finished watching the trailers, very promising. I wonder if it will live up the the fifties(I think?) version of it, and ofcoarse the radio broadcast that freaked America out in the thirties. If the aliens are like a plant or something weird like it's kind of imposing, that could ruin it easily though. They just have to have unstopable ships like HG wells!

The original movie wasn't the work of HG Wells either, and I haven't watched it. The book was good, though. What I like about the book is that Wells seems to sympathize somewhat with the Martians in the introduction. The Martians aren't pointy-nosed villains: they're desperate refugees in search of a home, and we were unfortunate enough to be in the way.

I am looking forward to it... the 50s version was lots of fun, best alien ships ever and great sound effects

I'm going to enjoy seeing humans pathetically trying to resist the Martains, and then being crushed liked ants under ridiculously superior firepower, technology and skill.

*SPOILER ZONE*

H.G. Wells was a master of the sci-fi genre, and only he had the guts to say that people are crap and it takes a bunch of microscopic viruses and diseases to stop the alien menace.

Boring! The old War of the worlds created a nation wide panic. People really thought the end was near.

Instead of making some shitty Tom Cruise movie why don't we just have all the radio stations broadcast warnings that Al Quaeda terrorists have smuggled a nuclear device into New York and is threatening to nuke the city? That would be fun.

If people are spoiled by that... then I pity the literary world... I learnt long ago that on the internet, an anarchic collective of hundreds of millions of human beings, there is no such thing as "standard knowledge".

Cool idea. Maybe you could film a model plane crashing into the whitehouse and broadcast it on CNN?

I didnt see the origional or read the book.

but i do have what i think is the soundtrack to it or the musical version of it or something, its like the story of it told in a bunch of songs.

Anyway, watched the trailers, aaaaand, it looks pretty bad, im thinking its gonna be a mix between I,robot and Day after Tomorrow. A ruined classic and a crap movie made famous by special effects.

Or we could crash a real plane into the whitehouse. Sure old Bush (convientently at his ranch in crawford at the time) would pretend to be mad, but after we arrange for some patriotic multinational corporations generously contribute several hundred million dollars for the building of a brand new 80 story Mega-Whitehouse complete with a 300 ft tall Ronald Reagan collossus out back, he'd be cool with it. Plus we'd probably give him 30 percent of all popcorn revenues.

...

On second thought, I think we should divert that plane to Crawford, Texas...

The War of the Worlds was supposed to be some kind of political commentary, wasn't it? I don't recall. I thought there was a message of some sort, though.

Yes, the original movie is a political commentary. Just substitute Martian with Soviet, and you get the idea. :mp5:

Out of curiosity, are there any fans of "Point Pleasant" here? There is a petition to save the show. Go to:

We need 10,000 signatures, but only have 998.

I think the real missed opportunity here was that War Of The Worlds should have been filmed as a period piece contemporary to H.G. Wells. A forgotten war...almost a history of a war we'd somehow forgotten. Something more akin to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow...

Now THAT woulda been fun. And for heaven's sakes, they were TRIPODS, not spaceships. Honestly.

in the novel, the radio play and the Moody Blues/Richard Burton edition from the 70s (which I love) they were tripods. The Hollywood movie had them fly around in basically what we would call gunships, vagually flying saucerish but more menancing looking.

Who knows what Speilberg will bring but it could be fun. I saw online that another version was in the works with the Martians in tripods but I haven't seen any buzz so I think that project (which I believe was Japanese but I could be wrong) may have either died out, or is taking a long time to develop.

HG Wells wasn't trying for political commentary in that novel, but its amazing how that novel forcast correctly all of the horrors of war in the 20th century (massive refugee flight, gas warfare, cities being destroyed)

It should have been based in late 19th early 20th Century Britain (specifically London) like the original.

I don't see how it could possibly live up to the 30's radio version. Just because now everyone knows about it. You can only fool ppl once with the same trick.

If you want that, read Book II of 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen', by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neil. You really should read Book I, just so you can understand Book II properly. And don't be put off by the film, which was shit.

I've heard that its better than the film (couldn't be much worse), I just don't see the point of changing the scene of the film. Din't work well in the 50's, don't see it'll work well now (though I hope I'm wrong!)

Do yourself a favour and get hold of a copy. In Book II, they fight the Martians - tripods, death rays, 1899 Victorian England, the lot. Great graphic novel.

As long as they don't actually "win" against the Martians.

I go into new films and games, especially remakes or sequels of good films and games, with a certain sense of pessimism. That way, if it turns out to be crap (and unfortunately, they usually do -- hell, I can't remember the last film to come out of Hollywood that will likely be remembered as a classic in the future), I'm not particularly disappointed. But if they turn out to be great, I'm very surprised. So I will say that this movie will likely be crap, but I hope it's not. I remember seeing the original when I was young, although the effects and the acting gave me a hell of a laugh, it was good so far as old movies go.

Save it?! It only just started! Jeeze, if it needs saving already it can't be all that good.

God yes! I've been waiting months for that!
Now that would be a great TV series!

Speaking of Alan Moore, I was checking out Amazon to see what new America's Best comics I could get (mainly SMAX, cause I didn't manage to get it when it can out as individual issues) and noticed the Marvelman (or Miracleman if you're in the States) collected books. They want $140 for Book I, $450 for Book II and $650 for Book III!
What pisses me off most of all is that I had the original issues, up to number 12 (cost about $2 each at the time). I then stopped buying them, because the shop missed 2 issues. I thought I would wait til I got those issues before buying issue 15 onwards. Never got them, so never bought the last few issues. :headbang:
Sometimes I think if I could go back and tell my young self anything (well this and don't eat so much chocolate fatty), it would be that when you buy those comics (like X-Men issues 108 up to 300, the original Punisher series, original Wolverine series, Swamp Thing when Alan Moore took over, I had Spiderman from about issue 80 to 300, Daredevil when Frank Miller was writing it, Batman Killing joke novel by Alan Moore - first printing, Watchmen series, 2000AD issue 2 t0 1000, etc etc etc), DON'T FUCKING READ THEM!! Put them in plastic bags and store them in a Bank. They'll be worth a fortune!

Of course the main reason they're worth a fortune is because every other kid was like me and read them til they fell apart.
