I need to define the word "praeterībant" for my homework, but I can't find out what it means. All I know is that it is a verb. Can someone good at Latin help me out?

is it an english word or a latin word?

I've got the OED and i'd be happy to look it up in the former case.

The mark over the i tells me 'latin' though i'll admit.

It's in latin, and I need to know what it means in English.

It means "they were disregarding" or "they were neglecting" It's imperfect past. (denoted by the ba)

The stem is praeterire which means to disregard.

It's the verb for 'passing by'... so that makes it something like 'they pass by', but I could be wrong on the tense.

Tenses I never was much good on... and its been a frightening 20 years or so since I last studied latin, so I'll forgive myself that one. I will say it didn't look particularly like the present tense to me, but I reckoned the OP would at least be able to work out the tense themself.
