Ah, looks like someone put links out on that kind of thing already. I just read Wikipedia's take on Buddhism...not bad. I'm by no means an expert, but I've studied the faith and they seem to have their facts in order.

Ok. Basic Belifes:
(I don't know if you already know this or not.)

The fundamental belife is known as the "4 Noble Truths". These are
Dukkha: suffering, unsatisfactoriness, discontent, stress;
The cause of dukkha: the cause of this dissatisfaction is craving (tanha) for sensuality, for states of becoming, and states of no becoming;
The cessation of dukkha: the relinquishment of that craving;
The path of practice leading to the cessation of dukkha: the Noble Eightfold Path of right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

Right speech, right action, & right livelihood come under the aggregate of virtue. Right effort, right mindfulness, & right concentration come under the aggregate of concentration. Right view & right resolve come under the aggregate of discernment.

Or (to put it into somewhat oversimplified crass terms):
Life sucks, cause you can't get everything you want. If you can learn to: be nice to people, be aware of what's going on around you, and understand it all; then you'll stop wanting, and life will be cool.

**laughs** Oh, that's good. Probably the best explination of Buddhism I've heard in a while. Simple and to the point. You get a cookie from me as well.

Thats pretty much what I have picked up in the last 10mins, life will end, so forget what is wrong as it isnt permanent, and get on with living causing as little depravity as possible

Don't really know that much about the redhats and yellowhats. Doug-sensei hasn't ever mentioned it, and my own studies tend towards the practical.

AFAIK, homosexuality isn't wrong action, for lay people. I do know some who frown on it.

According to Buddhanet, the Buddha never gave a teaching either way on homosexality, and the Vinaya prohibits it for monks and nuns (but they're supposed to be celibate in the first place).

More or less. Live in the right now, because that's all there is. And more enlightened is always good. :D

From my understanding, in certain areas, such as south east asia, homosexuality is frowned upon, but that is more of a cultural thing than a religious one.

EDIT: And i am late as usual! :D

Buddhism connect has a wonderful emailout maybe once a week - they cover aspects of practicing Buddhism pretty comprehensively. D T Suzuki may also be worth investigating if Zen is your thing, especially his wisdom about that moment of enlightenment.

I'm very interested in the philosophy of Buddhism, and have been investigating it as a spiritual option for a few years now, so I would be happy to discuss ideas any time. :D

I've always been curious about Buddism. If I were to ever join a religion (unlikely), Buddism would probably be the one for me!

Well, I've considered myself to be Buddhist since I was 16. I practice in the Vajrayana/Tibetan tradition, although not regularly.
I attend KTC on Sundays every now and again for morning tea and Tara meditation with the monks. It's very relaxing, and helps me to keep focused.

I try to take a weekend retreat at least once every year.

I thought about taking vows when I was 23 or so, but have decided to do the worldly thing. I'll still consider it if I'm old and still without kids.

Besides, it's still nice to say I'm atheist, and mean it.:)

Cool. Good to see another around.
If you don't mind my asking is Tara your Yidam?
(Personally, I haven't gotten around to a yidam yet.)

My teacher lives about 3 hours away, so I don't make group meditation sessions as often as I would like. I do try to make retreats once a year.
