Anything would be fine, so long as it's not pure Gold. I don't wanna have a green finger from wearing it all the time.

platinum + a sapphire, ruby or emerald.

I do not believe in the value of Diamonds and will simply refuse to give one as an engagement ring to any woman I wished to marry. What is the symbol and point in giving someone that special to you something that you feel is essentially worthless?

Honestly, I don't care. And my partner wouldn't wear a ring, so I think we'll have to try something different. The question is what?

Any suggestions?

A plain silver band would be all I'd go for. Perhaps something meaningful inscribed on the inside. I'd rather have something that means something than an expensive and bulky engagement ring.

Overall I don't care much for wedding/engagement rings.

I got my fiancee a 1/2 carat engagement ring with sapphires on each side, and each sapphire has a small diamond on the edge of it in the shape of a triangle. It's in white gold, and it cost me three times as much as my car did. This is coming from someone who didn't want to get married two years ago.

My brother's a total materialist. Whenever he gets $20, he buys a new game. It's almost sickening, the way he wastes money...

I'm materialistic, but not nearly as much as he is. I actually know what saving money means.

I'd go silver, maybe an inscription, probably a ruby or an emerald definately not a diamond, al it is is carbon, it looks kinda cool but seriously the value is so inflated on those things, any single diamond mine produces weekly roughly more diamonds than are sold in all jewlery stores world wide in a year. theres a place in middle america (forget where xactly but I want to say south dakota) that you can go and find them scatterd over the ground you can go, pay a few bucks and walk around picking up diamonds, you can use whatever you want to find them provided its not electrically or gas powered (excluding things like flashlights and lanterns electric and otherwise)

Give your mate a 50 cent ring. If your mate truly loves you, your mate will accept it. If your mate does not accept then the marriage would be doomed anyway but don't forget, after a week of being married give your mate a nice looking ring.

For the type of ring. I go for color, not by how much money it costs, because the ones that cost more look so damn boring.

24k isn't pure gold. 48k is. The reason we use 24k is because pure gold bends a lot easier, so we combine it with nickel. Anyway, all a girl really cares about in an engagement ring is the rock. Pick out a nice simple gold band, then spend your entire life savings on a stone to put on top of it.

If I could have any enagement ring I wanted, I'd get a pink sapphire cabochon ring. The one I want is by Rosalina and is accented by diamonds and is in quartz. It's huge and gaudy. Just perfect!! The one I'm thinking about looks like the pink sapphire on the necklace in the center:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/oksana1781/sapphire.jpg

It looks like that but with a ring attached. It's ridiculously expenisve, $6,700. If I have to practical though, like Spaam asked, I'd have to say that I don't like daimonds and most gold. I also don't like most rings out there.

I couldn't agree more.
When I got 'engaged', there was no question of having a ring and my wedding ring only cost £10 (about $17.50 in exchange I think?)

I am now divorced and living with another, we don't intend to get married.
Shortly after we first met he bought me a ring that I liked, it is a twisted/hammered ring of silver, bronze and copper. deffinately not expencive, but different and given to me from the heart.
I now wear (on my wedding ring finger), a silver copy of the one ring, only it has written in elvish "One love to keep them all etc, instead of one ring. My partner and my daughter gave me that, saying that I was the one who kept the family together and was the 'one love who bound us'.
Again not an expencive ring, but one that will have to be cut off my finger for me not to wear it.

Think what I'm saying in a very long winded way, is it not what the ring is, but the reason it was given, nothing will ever replacethat ring, no matter how much it cost or how flashy it is...........

My partner chose me a silver ring with a light brushed matte effect, one tiny diamond and one large topaz, square cut, set into the ring.
Our wedding rings are titanium, matched bevels around the edges, his is 8mm mine is 5mm. Very unusual and extremely hard-wearing. ;)

I think the one common theme on this thread is that everyone has a very different opinion - and so will your partner!!

My partner wanted to propose with a Cheezel (a cheese ring snack if "Cheezel" is only the Aussie brand name) so that I could pick my own ring later. But Cheezels are inclined to rot if kept for many years. So he made a jewellery box out of the Cheezel box and then proposed with a VERY cheap silver ring. Once I accepted we chose my ring together but the Cheezel box and silver ring will always be cherished even if the ugly thing won't be worn!!

For the record, we chose a 0.85ct diamond with 14 tiny diamonds set in the band - 7 on each side. The tiny diamonds are basically free after paying for the bigger one! My wedding band has tiny diamonds that line up with my engagement ring.

And size isn't everything. My only rule when we started shopping was that I didn't want a massive solitaire with a plain gold band.

And never, never, never tattoo someone else's name on your body!

I've been married for a month so divorce seems impossible now but the facts are that more marriages end in divorce than not (at least in Oz).

A friend has a husband who is about to pay $3000 to remove a tattoo that cost $30 because it has his ex's name on it.

My dad used to sell the stuff, and he said that it's pure, 24k Gold that leaves green on your skin.

The green stuff is oxidation (aka rust). Copper and otehr imputities in the ring react with chemicals secreted by your skin creating an oxide which is green in color. Pure gold doesn't reach with anything. However, not even 24k gold is totally pure.

For an enguagement ring, something custom made is great. It is much more thoughtful than a mass produced lump of metal.

Most people don't go into marriage expecting to break up. That's just horribly cynical. It's like people who tell someone who just got engaged to "get a prenup." Ugh.

Give your mate a 50 cent ring. If your mate truly loves you, your mate will accept it. Hmm, dunno. I'd think if you were proposing you'd be wanting to show your commitment, not put them through a test.

If someone got me a 50c ring, I might wonder why they didn't go to more effort, and why if they are planning to marry me, are they testing to see if I love them?

http://www.sndgems.com/3princesscutdiamondrings.htm

Though this is kinda nice too:
http://www.sndgems.com/threestonerings4.htmI have to say, I think 3-stone engagement rings are pretty gaudy.

My personal fave is the Tiffany Lucida (square-diamond) ring (http://www.tiffany.com/expertise/diamond/rings/engagement_lucida_ring.asp?ring=lucida&).

Blue Nile (www.bluenile.com (http://www.bluenile.com)) also makes one that is very similar - and a lot less pricey.

And I think cut, clarity, and color are far more important than having lots of carats! Actually, about .6-.75 ct is a good size, I think (and I'm tall, so my hands are larger than most women's).

EDIT: Remember, too, that a woman will (presumably) be wearing the ring all the time, so you probably don't want something that will snag on things easily.

I've never been able to get over the slight feeling of nausea I get when I see someone flashing a big old rock that says, "Oooo...looky...someone owns me, and he's willing to spend lots and lots and lots of money to prove how much he luuuuuuuuuuurves me." Puke. To me they seem silly, wasteful, sexist and tacky. If other people like them, that's cool, but for me? Ick.

My husband and I do both have modest wedding bands. That feels more egalitarian and well, right. It's a nice little way to carry a piece of each other, and not something to flash to the world.

When I proposed I had a small aircraft drop off a "picnic basket" with champagne, some goodies and the ring in it (used a fake cutout of the ring which I switched surreptitiously once it landed - it was South Africa, u cant be too careful :p) while we were having a picnic on a gorgeous summers day.

You're nuts! Just try to think of her and what she may like with her personality. Try not to go overboard.........my ex bought me a huge rock and let me tell ya.......I didn't like it really, was too afraid I would loose it or smack into something with it and the rock would fall out.
And again, I didn't say you assumed right either... ;)

However the purpose of this thread was cos I was curious :p

When I proposed I had a small aircraft drop off a "picnic basket" with champagne, some goodies and the ring in it (used a fake cutout of the ring which I switched surreptitiously once it landed - it was South Africa, u cant be too careful :p) while we were having a picnic on a gorgeous summers day.

How cheesy is that? :D

It worked, she said yes, we never got married tho and split up 6 months later so maybe cheese isnt the way to go :p
wow.....I hope when someone proposes to me they'll do something cheesy like that

With these its kinda hit and miss tho, gotta visit a bunch of antique stores before you find something that really feels right... of course any intelligent man will take his girlfriend shopping for a watch or something else non-ring-like and see her reaction (without giving the game away) to his choice which happens to be in the same store ;)

platinum + a sapphire, ruby or emerald.

I do not believe in the value of Diamonds and will simply refuse to give one as an engagement ring to any woman I wished to marry. What is the symbol and point in giving someone that special to you something that you feel is essentially worthless?

I did that one. And was told that Rubies were actually rarer than Diamonds.

My wife and I have found a jewler in Barbados, who sells one offs or limited editions. She costs me a fortune each year. But they are great rings/earings/necklaces/braclets etc. And it's all about 40-60% cheaper than here :D
I like it cos their funny and like to drink a bottle of wine or two each afternoon :)

I gave my wife a 1 caret asscher cut (very art deco) in a white gold setting, with a knife edge band. I designed it myself - which added to her love of it.

If you've never seen an asscher...it is a square cut with great depth.

You should have a look at South Africa, remember we are among the worlds biggest producers of gold, platinum and diamonds and the exchange rate aint bad ;)

We bought a very nice =anniversary= style ring for the engagement ring, and comfortable, plain 18k gold bands for the wedding rings.

The "engagement" ring was about CDN $800. The bands together were about CDN $200.

At about year seven or so she sold the anniversary ring to a pawn shop so she could give the $150 or so away to a travelling preacher.

At year ten she took off the wedding ring and hurled it at me -- for the last time.

At year eleven she gave me the boot altogether. I'm making my mobile home as comfortable as possible while she lives in my five-bedrooms, hardwood floors, hot water heat, fireplace, built in 1935 heritage home (while I pay the mortgage on it).

Bottom line for me: get something meaningful, sacrificial (my folks used to say it should cost three months' wages), identifiable (you want a public statement "I'm involved already, thanks") and personal to the two of you.

It would have to be platinum for me, I'm not a fan of gold (even white gold, ick).

I'd definately go a Tiffany setting, or a square/princess cut (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Aerou/Other/engagement_fancy_emdsides1.jpg), with a wedding band that matched the engagement ring (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Aerou/Other/weddingband1.jpg). Or a simple platinum band with no channeled diamonds, that would work too, heh.

When I first got engaged, my ex-fiance proposed with a 2.5 orange diamond (http://www.orangediamonds.co.uk/) in a platinum Tiffany etoile setting. I loved it. :)

you will only get a green finger if it's gold plated :P

Pure gold does not turn yrou finger green. Gold plate or fake gold turns your finger green. I wear gold all the time and my fingers are not green.

I'd actualy prefer a dot on my head like the Islams. Those dots rock! I could like, make mine blue and Jennifer neon green (Her favorite color.) and then like on the magic the gathering color wheel i could send pinkos back to another plain of exsistance or simply silence them (IE: counterspell.) and she could become really big and stomp Bible-thumpers into the ground and peoples would run in terror because blue and green were not meant to combine thier strengths and so begins a new and improved Invasion block bwahahahahaha!

*Sigh!* I've been playing magic the gathering too much.. still it'd be cool though..

My husband gave me this ring (http://www.customceltic.com/celt-heartenga.htm). The center stone is a ruby with a white pearl on one side and a black pearl on the other. Don't have a picture, but can get one if you really want it.

When we tied the knot (literally, since we had a handfasting), we got the matching wedding bands in white gold.

Just a question... what engagement ring would you like to give/receive (within reason)?

Look into TiGold. It's a alloying of titanium and gold. It produces a gold that is around 24 karat that is as strong as 14 karat gold. *nod*
