Explain SAT to stupid foreigner

I read the 'Presidential IQ' thread and it started as a competition
about who has the highest score...

Could someone explain it to me. I know the basic idea (I've seen Conan O'Brien :D )
What's the idea behind it? What's the avarage score? What is good score?
Does it matter how high (or low) you score... The whole deal?

The SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It really has nothing to do with IQ. It's what you take when you apply to college. You would want to probably want to get at least 1100 if you're planning on going to a technical college. 1400 can get you into the Ivy League. You can get a score beyond 1400 though. However, it is very rare.

SAT - Stupidity Awareness Test (Standardized Aptitude Test)
Idea is somehow that standardized tests are effective as a method for determining (as one factor) of which college you go to.
Average score (on the former 1600-pt one): 1100-1200
Now it's worth 2400 points

Lots of things with the SAT... It is supposedly a "measure of the test-taker's ability to succeed in college"... glean from that what you will, but it's in no way an intelligence test, as some people in the other thread were trying to make it (converting SAT scores to IQs). Of course, all the people I know who got good scores on the SAT were smart, but there are plenty of smart people I know who didn't. Intelligence is too subjective a quality to ever be measured in a test, really.

Didn't mean to start ranting there about my opinion of IQ tests, though. The other thing I was going to mention is that a high SAT score isn't a ride to college. People look at a 1600 (perfect score, at least on the old tests, now on the new ones with essays the maximum score is 2400) and say, "well, he can go wherever he wants." And I sense a lot of bitterness from people about how "a stupid test decides whether I go to this college." In my experience, it's been the opposite. I applied to MIT with my 1600, ranked 2nd in my class, had all the numbers colleges supposedly look for, and didn't get in. So I think that now and in the past few years, they are moving away from looking at test scores and looking more at everything else the applicant presents.

In England, the SAT is taken when you're 11 and then again at 14, and they exist for no other reason than to tabulate schools.

It's odd to note how competetive the government wants our schoosl to be, yet how derisive of the idea of a privatized school system they would be.

I think it stands for something else here, also.

Yup, and axed the analogies everyone always complained about, but then gave them an essay section that will probably be complained about ten times as much.

Well, like I said it doesn't happen too often but it does. I just don't want the poster to think American colleges expect people to score 1600 or close to it.

that would be insane, although now that they changed I think they do expect around that

Mitch scored like 1580
and Keenan scored (I think) 1530

A friend of mine's older brother, who is currently a student at Cornell, missed one question on his SAT and got like a 1595 or something. I would LIKE to try the SAT I next year (my sophmore year) although it may not be possible. Now (dorky as this sounds) I basically know where I want to go in life.

When I took it a couple years ago it was two parts, verbal (which is written and deals with english language skills) and math.

I scored an 800 out of 800 on the verbal half and 710 out of 800 on the math half.

for a score overall of 1510.

From my experience taking the SAT I in June 2004, it isn't that hard a test. I missed three questions in the verbal section, so I only got a 1560. I didn't do any test preparation or anything and pretty much took the test cold and hung over...

The trick with the SAT I is not to worry about them. They are not the end all be all. If you take the test with the mindset that it is but one aspect of many things, you'll do fine.

'Sat' is the past tense of 'sit' which is what you are probably doing right now. HINT: it involves a chair.

If by IB you're referring to International Baccalaureate, then the American version is IB.

yes it is multiple choice. Since most colleges require this or the ACT, a ton of students take it, so to make grading easier they make it multiple choice. Although if you get a question wrong you lose points and there is no penalty for leaving them blank.

hmm...

in A level, in one of my Eng Lit questions i had to write an essay on the poetic techniques of Chaucer in the Canterbury Tales, quoting lines and passages and analysing them...all without a book

and in history, i had to examine and explain the various reasons for WW2, with essay questions on the importance of economic factors in the rivalry between Japan and the US leading up to the war..

so its just strange to see a big test in multiple choice

The most important thing to know about the SAT is that it doesn't actually message intelligence, it measures if you can live up to presupposed standards set-up to the eleventh grade level in the U.S. system. Low scorers are often the most intelligent, whereas high scorers are often those who can remember the most; this isn't always true, keep in mind, just an observation of what my fellow high school buddies have compared to with test scores.
