I'm listening to them now, that's what made me think of it.
Nine Inch Nails would be my first choice, but there was so much good music in the 90's it's hard to say.
I don't think I'll be saying the same for this decade, once it's over.
TOOL!!!!!!
Mogwai, Stereolab, Radiohead, Powderfinger, Rage Against the Machine, Siguer Ross, The Crystal Method, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Chemical Brothers, Spiderbait all come in at an equal second place.

Hell yeah- they rock. I'm surprised, up until recently, there wasn't a scant mention of them on this forum. I guess it's the Aussie influx. :D

I don't think we would've got past 1992. Their impact was so huge, every other band named is the wrong answer. If you gave the wrong answer, you're either just trying to be cool or you don't get it and might as well listen to country. The 90's, especially 93-97, was an awesome time for music. There were so many good bands, there wasn't enough popularity to go around. A lot of 1 and 2-hit wonders of that time were actually really good bands. There will never be another Nirvana, and there will never be a period quite like that.

Nirvana may have been groundbreaking, but musically, they weren't as talented as other grunge bands like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. And the question is "best band", not "most influential band".

Yes, they had a big impact. I still don't really like them. And they're massively overrated - one of the 3 most overrated bands of all time, in my opinion.
Oh and BTW, I don't like Kyuss either. :D

That's a fair point. Kim Thayil is an awesome guitarist, I can only wish I could play like that.
However, Nirvana were the band that got me into music. I wouldn't have picked up a guitar if they hadn't been around. The problem with both Soundgarden and AIC for me is that their work wasn't always consistent (IMO). There are some Soundgarden songs that are simply craptacular (mostly Cornell's fault). While AIC aren't quite that extreme, they have a fair number of mediocre songs. Nirvana, on the other hand, don't have very many songs that I don't like at all.
Oh and BTW, I don't like Kyuss either. :D

I DON'T HAVE TO JUSTIFY MYSELF TO YOU!!!!!
Ok, three reasons:
1) Very boring lead singer - Kyuss suffers the same problem as Interpol, with a crap-tacular lead vocalist who not only can't write, but frankly can't sing.
2) Droning - Every single Kyuss song I've ever heard is just endlessly droning and essentially sleep-inducing.
3) Inconsistent - About as reliable as Robbie William's sexuality in terms of delivery. For every semi-decent piece they make, there's about ten that strive for new levels of brain-drilling.
HOWEVER, I should point out that Kyuss is really Drug Rock, and I do admit to enjoying it more when I dropped acid.

The last I heard, he was on the No WTO Combo, with Jello Biafra, Krist Novoselic, and Gina Manowail. They play at the Seattle demonstations in '99, and released an EP of what they played.

Yes, on both counts. It does have some Jello Biafra spoken word on it, though, so if you don't like spoken word, you might not like it. They do a cover of "Let's Lynch the Landlord" on it, also.
NIRVANA, i don't think anyone else comes close.. THey paved the way for most of the guitar bands around today..
1) Very boring lead singer - Kyuss suffers the same problem as Interpol, with a crap-tacular lead vocalist who not only can't write, but frankly can't sing.
I originally had that impression too- I thought he is secondary to the instrumental work. Eventually he grows on you and he becomes part of the music.
2) Droning - Every single Kyuss song I've ever heard is just endlessly droning and essentially sleep-inducing.
While I can see your point with some songs, it's not universal at all. Eg. "Gardenia", "50 Million Year Trip."
3) Inconsistent - About as reliable as Robbie William's sexuality in terms of delivery. For every semi-decent piece they make, there's about ten that strive for new levels of brain-drilling.
I disagree again. I tend to listen to the whole albums in one hit, and they come together a lot better.
Doesn't work, obviously, for their greatest hits album. :)
HOWEVER, I should point out that Kyuss is really Drug Rock, and I do admit to enjoying it more when I dropped acid.
I enjoy it even when sober, actually.

"Welcome To Sky Valley" is the first I heard, and I still think it's their best.
"And The Circus Leaves Town" is probably a little easier to find in stores and is almost, but not quite, as good. (There is a secret track on it that is supposedly a tribute to Nirvana :))

Even though they did most of their best work in the 80s, I still have to respect Sonic Youth for all the great work they did in the 90s, especially on the more avant-garde end of the musical spectrum. The SYR series may not be for everyone, but it contains some of SY's most consistently intriguing instrumental work. Washing Machine was arguably their best since Daydream Nation, and Goo and Dirty are extremely underrated in respect to the rest of their discography. Listen to them free of context, and you'll find a pair of wonderful experimental rock albums with little to no evidence of blatant commercial pandering, which seemed to account for most of the criticism levied against them upon release.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Pavement yet, either. Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain are both simply genius, and Wowee Zowee and Brighten the Corners more than hold their own.
Guided By Voices, who have written more amazing songs in the past decade than likely any other, even if only half of them are any good? Take into account all the side projects, too: Airport 5, Go Back Snowball, etc., and it's a body of work to be reckoned with.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor? Mogwai? Bjork? Beck? Yo La Tengo? Built to Spill? Aphex Twin? Boredoms? Don Caballero? There are just wayyyy too many great bands in the decade to mention here. I can't decide.

Personally, I'm getting sick of people Ooo-ing and Ahh-ing over Nirvana, hell, Rolling Stone put Smells Like ATeen Spirit as #11 in their top 500 songs (it's not even the best Nirvana song and it somehow beat out anything by say, the Who, which is just sacrilidge) and they put Kurt Cobain in the top 20 of best guitarists.... A great song writer he may have been, but a great guitarist? Certainly not. Not on a list that Tony Iomi didn't make and that John Frusciante and Tom Morello placed outside the top 20. They are overrated, if Cobain hadn't blown his brains out (or if Courtney hadn't done it for him, whatever) and they continued to make music, no one would give a rat's ass about them anymore.

Wow "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was rated as low as #11? They should've removed one of the 1s
I do agree that Kurt Cobain wasn't a great guitarist, if you're talking about technical playing, as his style was rather simplistic. I'm not sure what criteria they were using. I do have to agree that Nirvana wouldn't be rated so high if Kurt weren't dead, not because they're undeserving, but because people don't know what good music is.

This was best songs of all time. It wasn't some stupid "best songs of the 90s" garbage... Even then Smells Like Teen Spirit shouldn't even place #1 in a top 10 of Nirvana songs.
This is Nirvana competing with greats like Led Zeppelin, the Who, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan et c. They placed Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone as #1 (not his best song either) And there's no way in hell Kurt Cobain could compete with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Santana again, I must bring up Tom Morello (that guy's amazing) John Frusciante et c. Confusion is Sex borrows too liberally from Branca's work for my tastes. Not to say that I don't enjoy it once in a while, as it's a prime piece of early 80s New York no-wave/noise rock, but it lacks a distinct identity.

Cool! About the same as mine, but switch Mellon Collie with Adore. :)
Ha! You actually give Rolling Stone any credence? I have that issue, actually, and I have to say that the list was complete bullshit- Wasn't there no mention of Zeppelin until no. 22, or something? And I don't recall seeing RATM in there at all. And no, SLTS isn't their best song. But they *are* one of the best bands of all time, in my opinion.
Savage Garden
I really hope you're joking.

Remember their list of the 50 (or was it 100) best guitarists of all-time? Johnny Ramone was #16 (WTF!?) and Joan Jett was #12 (double WTF!?).
Rolling Stone's got some issues.
I'm going to go to my bed and cry now. You smelly mollops! Nirvana only influenced shite like alice in chains and all the rest. The real influence and clearly one of the best bands of the 80s 90s and 00s is the melvins :headbang: :headbang:
Green River created grunge and featured Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam.. it was not Nirvana that began grunge.. do your research before insulting bands that inspired Nirvana... Alice in Chains is far from shite.. and was not inspired by Nirvana but by heavy metal and punk music and have a far heavier sound than most of the grunge bands, people just refer to them as grunge as they came from seatle durring the grunge era.
Best band of the 90's? I'm gonna have to go with the Ramones.
Sure, they broke up in 1996, but so what? They were great, even at the very end.

Morrighan and Rhea's Obsession, though that's quite late 90's.
It's not my personal choice but I would choose objectivly Nirvana. A martyrs death and forever glory.
Why?

:)
I see. But the first song I ever really liked was "God Save The Queen" by the Sex Pistols. My sister had it on a demo CD from a magazine (or something of the sort). I was in her room, and she decided to play it. The song ended, and I asked her to do it again. And again. And again.
That was in 1990... I was only 2 years old, and I remember it vividly. And oddly enough, the song's not gotten the least bit stale. It was 13 years old when I first heard it, now it's 28 years old. Not even dull. Not in the least.

Media manufactured martyrdom should not be part of the criteria for determining the best band of the 90s. Nevermind and In Utero are fine albums, but their value is more than overinflated, due to rags like Rolling Stone, obsessed with the past and clueless about the present, much less the future, needing a spokesman for this or that, someone they can easily package as a marketing tool for a demographic, and sell more magazines. We all know that's the last thing Kurt would have wanted to be, anyway.

I cant believe no-one has mentioned U2 or REM yet...
Although I would probably go for Nirvana purely based on them being the most influential band of the 90s imo.

Well, in U2's case it's probably because they didn't do anything good in the 90s, except for a few songs on Achtung Baby. On a list over 80s bands on the other hand...

Same for R.E.M. The bulk of their good work, barring Automatic for the People, was released on their first 5 albums, from '83-'87.
