Worst Band of the Seventies

Vittos Ordination

Considering the quality of seventies rock, this thread should have plenty of nominations.

I'm going to start off with Foreigner, Journey, and Styx.

Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, and Lynrd Skynrd are my three nominations.

Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, and Lynrd Skynrd are my three nominations.

Although I whole-heartedly agree with you on the first two, and somewhat on the last one, I think you are going to catch a lot of flak for those choices.

Foreigner and Journey are great! Jefferson Airplane is horrible, but I enjoy Lynyrd Skynard.

Though I don't like Styx.

And ABBA suck.

Hey, Pink Floyd are good! :p

There's being good with your instruments... Then there's writing good music. They did not do that. It's trite and boring, and they were full of themselves.

Completely.

I can't wait until someone says Led Zeppelin or Queen. The shit will hit the fan then, and everyone will get all fired up over personal tastes.

I'm not exactly sure if Motley Crue was 1970s, but they were horrible...the only song that I like from them is Kickstart my Heart.

I was gonna say LZ and Queen, but I didn't want shit to hit the fan so quickly.

And, they actually wrote good music, so I would've been flame baiting.

Meh, I love the Scorpions...the guitar work is simply amazing, although it doesn't live up to Page, Hendrix, or Lifeson..it certainly beats Iommi however.

However, Iommi has only half of two of his playing fingers, and uses plastic caps to make up for it. He can't even feel the strings on his guitar. Consider that, and he's pretty damn good. (And he plays left-handed like me, which makes him all the more awesome.)

Well, to me their guitar work sounds at best to be on par with the other rock bands of the era, ie Foreigner, Boston, Bad Company.

well I was in Junior High and High School in the 1970s, so we are talking my music here...

everybody involved with Disco should have been shot

Jefferson Starship, Foreigner, and Leo Sayer should have been shot as well.

Pink Floyd not only didn't suck, but they have the longest running album in the top 40.... ever

Leonard Skynard had at least a couple more good albums in them... too bad that plane crash wiped them out (by the way, popular musicians should REALLY avoid charter aircraft)

Queen was good enough to have hits well into the 80s (although I HATE Another one bites the Dust)

Now the worst bands of the seventies:

Yes, they both recieve a lot of critical praise.

My dislike for Pink Floyd is more of a personal taste than a critical evaluation.

That's based on a personal dislike (IE. your opinion on the sound is subjective. I like it. Though I will concede that some songs drag on a little.), and isn't rooted in any actual suckiness on the bands part. If they were purely a hype band, how did the unlabelled 4th album do so well?

I like both Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin. I'm not too fond of Queen though. The way Freddy Mercury sings bothers me.

Also, Led Zepplin's fourth album did so well because of subliminal messages.

While I personally would vote Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd as the most overrated bands of the '70s, I can't say they're the worst, as they have some good songs.
I do, however, find it odd that the Jefferson Airplane made so many people's lists. How can the best band of the '60s be the worst of the '70s?
With that said, I think the worst '70s band would have to be Foreigner.

This is impossible to ascertain... after the punk revolution of '76/'77, there were so many awful, awful bands that sprung up in almost every corner of the world, trying to be the Ramones and failing miserably. Searching through the 7"s at the radio station taught this to me. Sometimes, even attitude isn't enough to save you.

Have to agree with BackwoodsSquatches on all three counts, though. Also, although I should hate Pink Floyd in principle for being pretentious, there were far worse prog-rock bands. Like Rush, or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

It was out there, but not in mainstream rock, which was behaving like a bunch of pretentious students.

For example, in the USA, the New York scene and some of the West Coast bands were good. Europe had the beginnings of synth music, the UK a good R'n'B-based pub rock scene and a lot of very sound folk music. There was funk and reggae all over.

That's just off the top of my head. The good stuff is always out there, it's sometimes harder to spot than others is all.

I agree that there was good music out there in the early '70s, such as the Stooges. But it increased exponentially with the advent of punk.

I agree; there wasn't much before 1976 that I enjoy, excepting Krautrock (Neu!, Faust, etc.), classical minimalism (Terry Riley, Steve Reich, etc.), and a few others. However, I was trying to say that while there were many good bands that came out of the revolution (i.e. Wire, The Fall, Pere Ubu, the list goes on and on), there were many more bands that were positively wretched, relegated to basement shows and nearly unlistenable 7" splits, compilations, and so on. And while I admire them in spirit, actually listening to it is trying.

(A pedant writes.) More of a step change than an exponential increase. Punk decreased the entry costs for new bands, it became cool to have less gear, less rehearsals, smaller audiences and more creativity. Recording and publicity costs dropped dramatically. It both increased the number of `small' bands, and improved their visibility.

But I know where you're coming from. Round about '78, I remember looking back and realising I only really liked about five bands from '75 and about 100 from '77. Of course, ten years later, I realised I'd actually missed dozens of really good bands from '75. So, yeah.
