They didn't agree on much, but at least they are talking. This is an exciting chapter in Russian-Ukrainian relations. It could've been very possible that Putin acted like a spoiled child, and cut off dialogue to Ukraine to make his point. But they didn't. To the contrary, they are trying to guage eachother's differences. It's a start.

It's a good way to soothe possible tension between Russia and Ukraine, though Ukraine should not get too soft with Russia considering Putin is a ruthless despot yet tries to look like he's not.

Well, its too early to judge Putin fully. He might not be the type of guy to kill opponets, like Hitler or Stalin did. However, he does sometimes arrest his more powerful opponets, as is what happened to the CEO of Yukos. It's very dangerous when a billionaire opposes you. Just look at Ross Perot, and how he almost changed politics.
