This is a weird topic and I don't know really how to best explain it, but:
What are some of the best songs and musicians that people know and like, but a lot just don't realize it?
For example:
Songs- "Under Pressure" - David Bowie, "Pasttime Paradise" - Stevie Wonder
Musicians - Van Morrison

Slander! I do not like Van Morrison!

Aaron Copeland comes to mind, but thats lame as it's pretty obvious.
There is a guy you've heard hundreds of times and not realized he does other things, and that is Ken Nordine (http://www.wordjazz.com/). (Also less esoteric here (http://dead.net/almanac/vol1_2/Nordine_Longp4.html)

Mozart. I think you'd be stunned how many of your favorite movies have some mozart playing somewhere in the background.

Barber's Adagio for Strings (Symphony #2). For those Kleenex moments.*
*No, not those sort of Kleenex moments.

Barber's Adagio for Strings (Symphony #2). For those Kleenex moments.
If it were a fugue rather than an adagio for strings, it would give new meaning to this statement:
"I thought I saw an angel once, but it was just my husband in a druid's cloak masturbating to organ music."(does anybody know where that line came from? I forgot.)
Yes, I ignored your small print. But I just had to...

Great line. It seems to be an Onion quote.
(I just Googled, "Druid's cloak masturbating". This is not a sentance I ever anticipated writing.)

Head Automatica is alright in my own personal taste. Saw them live once.
Ozzy Osbourne. Why? Because "Crazy Train" is played at pretty much every Sporting event I go to, and nobody seems to hate it.
Same goes for the Ramones. They play "Blitzkrieg Bop" when a team is falling behind, and sometimes even the crowd starts chanting "hey, ho, let's go!".

The Rolling Stones (Jumpin' Jack Flash, Can't Get No Satisfaction)
and for some reason I am tempted to say the Beegees.

Those are probably of the two most well known bands for their respective genres in history.

Let me be the first to express my dislike for that song then. If it wasn't for the first 20 seconds of that song nobody would even recognize it.

This I will give that to you, it's hard not to enjoy that song. Fist pumping music at its best.

Okay then lets see....hmm how about the song American Woman or perhaps Dust in the Wind?

I rather like Kate Bush (I think she influenced many others like Paula Cole, Tory Amos, Sarah Slean)
V.A.S.T. is another great example of great music.
But one of the greatest composers (not the only one, mind) must be Carl Stalling. He did incredible stuff, even if it was for cartoons.
I do not like Van Morrison!
You just don't realize you like it :D

As for American Woman, the band the Guess Who, would probably be a band that a lot of people like but don't realize.
Another band and song that I think fits is "Werewolves of London" - Warren Zevon.

Apparently lots of young people think that We are the Champions is a "folk song" and isn't by a band. Lol, kids these days...
And does anyone know who wrote Feeling Good, which was done by Muse and Michael Buble? The Muse version is the shit.

I like the song, but I hate the tone of Randy Rhoads' guitar. It sounds simply "ick".

Nice. I remember when Take 5 was being used to sell Infiniti cars...for a brief moment I knew what it was like to be a classic rock fan with all thier music being used to advertise beer...

I think this is supposed to be songs that people have heard and liked, but don't know about. You've probably heard mine somewhere (Harakiri), and few people know of it. And yes, I am Gnomish Republic's secondary nation.

Yep, so long as it's the Goldfinger version.
How's about The Clash? London Calling, Rock the Casbah, Should I Stay or Should I Go. Most people probably know the songs, but not everyone knows who they're by.

Yes, Kool and teh Gang did lots of good stuff that nobody really knows, like Duji.
Also Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island since it has been remixed.
Die Fantastischen 4 also used the really good Right Down Here by Asha Puthli for Die Da, which is quite known in Germany, at least.

I love that surf music. It's just so happy; perfect pop. It even makes me wish I was the athletic type. My favourite is the surf medley delivered by Junior Brown on Semi Crazy.

I live in Surf City (Santa Cruz, CA) so I get a lot of it. I'm still bummed about missing a chance to see Dick Dale two summers ago......
Did someone mention Carmina Burana(sp) yet? By Carl Orff? It just occoured to me and I don't want to make two posts.
