# At least Afghan/Iraq Girls life is easier now...

For all the pervading pessimism of the average Iraqi, US commanders maintain a pervading optimism.
...
"I think we’re getting some momentum built up against the insurgency," he (Richard Myers) said.
But statistics from other sources continue to paint a grim picture.
...
the true trend behind the figures is hard to tell, there is no doubt that nearly every Iraqi can recount a tale of loss, often involving a loved one and often still fresh. A week ago, a friend of Ms Jamal’s was shot dead in his grocery shop. His only crime was being the brother of a former Baath Party member.
...As a young, single girl in Saddam’s time, Ms Jamal could wander the streets and meet her friends freely without worry.
Today, life is an endless round of nights in at home, chaperoned trips out and the occasional stay-over at friends’ houses. "In the old days, we could meet in clubs and in parks and other public places, but now the only place for that is at work or at the college - and there most people just finish work and go home early."

I thought it might be worse. Perhaps some progress is being made. However, I bet that things will act up by next summer. The insurgents can fight from buildings, taunting American soldiers in heavy uniforms in the unbearable heat. That should also shut down the entire damn country.

Their lives are getting better, maybe if you watch some footage of Afghanistan or Iraq from a non-liberal new channel you will see clear evidence of it. But what does most of the media want you to believe? Bush is a moron and should be impeached for attacking two countries that possessed no threat to us. Now think a second, did Afghanistan pose a threat to the world? Yes. It was the site of the most Al-Quida training camps. Did Iraq? After seeing all of the evidence, no. But if NBC weapons had been found were would everyone stand?

What better way to justify a war than "they could have been a threat and wouldn't you have felt stupid then?"

Hate to break this to you, but Iraq is the most dangerous non-African country in the world now, and it's not because of the liberal media.
And no-one was against Bush invading Afghanistan. The Taliban was sheltering several deadly terrorist groups, it's civil rights record was straight out of the Dark Ages, and it was clearly very tight with Al-Qaeda high command. Everyone accepted that it was a threat.
Iraq, on the other hand. wasn't. Everyone knew it wasn't. Everyone in the US administration knew it, and frequently vocalised that before 9/11. Saddam was contained. If he'd had WMDs, he'd have used them, probably while invading Iran again. Saddam had no connection with Al-Qaeda. The only terrorists that bothered Iraq were ones WE funded (and usually ran). Finally, there's the whole thing that the invasion of Iraq was illegal. That's quite important. It means that the US is, in effect, actually no better than Saddam's regime. That's the kind of thing that pisses the rest of the world off, including volitile nuclear countries like North Korea.
Oh, and Bush IS a moron. Look at any of his quotes. 'Most of our imports come from abroad'. Where do the other ones come from, George?
Bush managed to take all the goodwill that the rest of the world had for the US post-9/11 and flushed it down the toilet. He's been acting like a spoilt child who's found his daddy's gun.
Oh, and where we'd stand if weapons HAD been found is irrelevant. There were no weapons. You might as well ask where we'd stand if we were invaded by flying cows.

This argument would apply if the intelligence had been mistaken, but the way Bush and Blair contorted the evidence and in effect lied to their peoples destroys any validity.

I hope things will get better soon, you have too many lives invested in this, by wich I mean dead American and allied soldiers.

Not to mention these gems:
"That's just the nature of democracy; sometimes pure politics enters into the rhetoric."
"This would be so much easier if this were a dictatorship, so long as I'm the dictator."

I know they understand the proper role of government. And that is that government can't make people love one another.

We spent a lot of time talking about Africa, and we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease.

Blame the insurgents. They have to realise that they need to fight back the insurgents themselves as well.

If Iraq actually had NBC weapons and the ability to deploy them against the US or our allys, wouldn't an invasion be
absurdly stupid. Sure, we could have still won the ground war easily but with nothing left to loose why wouldn't Sadam have destroyed a few major Western cities?

I was watching the Cutting Edge (SBS Tuesdays)...or maybe it was the docco that was broadcasted after the late news/movie, like 10pm or 12pm or something, as I do obsessively, and I hear a majority of the Iraqi population are under 15.
Seems to me that the Destruction of Iraq was not only an attack on a sovereign nation, but attacks on civilian targets amount to little more than attacks on children, which is a breach on the UN's Rights of the Child. Or my tangent might be completely tangental. It's pretty gut-wrenching to comprehend, nonetheless.
After Australia's collaboration in the Iraqi unpleasantness, I find myself clinging to anything to appease my guilt, to no avail. :headbang:
