Post the origin of your nation name

Cyania
19-03-2005, 08:18
Where did your nation name come from? Cyania is an acronym from c(reate) y(et) a(nother) n(ation) plus the Latinate suffix -ia indicating a name.

Potaria
19-03-2005, 08:20
Mine came from an alias of mine, Potatish. But, since I wanted to have a Nation with a reasonable name, I used Potaria.
Maraque
19-03-2005, 08:20
Maraque (pronounced Mara-kay) is just a random name I came up with.

My puppet nations; Curona, Westhampton, and Atrons are also names I just made up during the spur of the moment.
Mlle Juliette
19-03-2005, 08:21
Where did your nation name come from?Nothing nearly as intricate as yours - my name is Juliette, and Mlle is short for Mademoiselle in French, so there you go... Mademoiselle Juliette. Yay creativity! :p

Mine kinda explains itself. I was following a link of a link and I didn't think I'd come back so after trying for a bit I gave up.
Rogue Angelica
19-03-2005, 08:21
A couple years back, I drew and created a creature I like to call a rogue angel. So I added -ica. Yay.

My nation is a misspelled Sufjan Stevens song title.
Wild Hand Motions
19-03-2005, 08:27
I made this nation on a dare, with most of my Academic Decathlon team watching. Part of the AcDec curriculum is to give a speech--and I'm known throughout the school as "that one AcDec girl who gives speechs with big hand motions." Thus, Wild Hand Motions. My single puppet, the Leather Ocelots, is because Ocelot is a nickname of mine, and leather is my favorite fabric. :p

you might want to check out otto and gregor strasser as well, they weren't gay but they were other important leftwing nazis. my knowledge of them is kinda superficial but they are interesting as well. the nazis are often seen as monolithic evil, its interesting to see what a strange and sometime contradictory bunch they were. it humanizes them, which i think is important. the holocaust isn't what some monsters did 60 years ago, its what we all could do in our worst moment if the conditions were right.

Central East America
19-03-2005, 09:32
Mine is pretty simple. A bunch of states in the middle of the Eastern United States of America decided that the US government sucked, and was force feeding them martial law and paranoia, while taking away more and more of their rights. So, they formed a new nation within the United States, one that has alot more freedom.

Etc.
Nation of Fortune
19-03-2005, 09:41
I named my nation after the old term soldier of fortune, but since soldier of fortune was taken, I changed soldier to nation, implying instead of just beng a single soldier It was a nation full of mercenaries.
Marrakech II
19-03-2005, 10:16
I use to live in Morocco for awhile. Marrakech is my favorite city from there. In fact that is where my wifes family is from.

It's actually a joke. DLE is an atheist nation intended to be partially mysterious. Anyone with familiarity with a certain type of Christians should get it.

Patra Caesar

My nation's name is a pelling error, it was supposed to be 'Caesar Pater' but ohh well. Pater means father, as in father of the nation in a father knows best state.

19-03-2005, 11:17

1= me soundeing too proud (i'm #1)
100 =on hotmail the first itme i used this name was taken
101 = room 101 (never a good thing)
300 = too plane
301 = just slightly off normal... just like me

Skydragonia
19-03-2005, 11:50
This was the very first nation I created on NationStates, in 2003 (its been resurrected since), and at the time I wanted Dragonia. It was taken, so my husband suggested I put the Sky in, to sort of give the impression of dragons flying :)

Sanctaphrax
19-03-2005, 12:56
Mine is the city of Sanctaphrax, from the Edge Chronicles, a series of books by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. (very good books;))
Portu Cale
19-03-2005, 13:02
My nation's name is my IRL nation name origin (Portugal)

Its latin, it means "Cale Harbor", it was a northern city in my country.. along time ago. Basically, its history :p
Divine Imaginary Fluff
19-03-2005, 13:03
I just wanted to make my nation as weird as possible, so I ended up with Divine Imaginary Fluff, since it was the weirdest name I could think of at the moment. I then used the prefix The Holy Empire of, since that enhanced the effect. (now I use "The Most Holy Empire of" instead, since that sounds even weirder)
Hata-alla
19-03-2005, 13:09
Hata-Alla means "hate everybody" in swedish. Not a very nice name, but it suits my dictatorship.
Borgoa
19-03-2005, 13:34
Mine is the Latin name for the town of Borgå in Finland, where my mother was from. Random I know...
Monkeypimp
19-03-2005, 13:39
The first time I wrote down where my name came from I saved it on my comp. Here's the copy+paste of it. Keep in mind its pretty poorly written, as I quickly typed it up to answer the question.

Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name on of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly (note: in the dictionary at the end of my last year at school I got 'Always seen: with his bitchaz, Most likely to be: A P.I.M.P. this stemed from this tshirt) When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. When I started playing NS, it was the name I was using at the time so I went with it.
Atheistic Might
19-03-2005, 13:39
Mine is a twist on the phrase, "the atheists might...", rewritten to sound like a country's name. As something of a pun, Atheistic Might's motto is, "We just might..."
I V Stalin
19-03-2005, 14:50
A variation of Down With The Sickness, but I couldn't be bothered typing "Down With The System" in every time I log in, so it became "Down System"
I always assumed you kinda named it after System Of A Down.
Anyway, my own...named after one of the co-conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot to kill King James. Possibly. Or maybe not...could be after a certain 20th century dictator of the Soviet Union.
Rattus Norvegicus 7
19-03-2005, 14:52
Named after "Rattus Norvegicus" was unavailable.
The Alma Mater
19-03-2005, 14:59
To quote wikipedia:

"Alma mater" is derived from the Latin term for "nourishing mother". It is frequently used in the English language in reference to the university or college a person has attended. In American English, it is also in reference to a high school or elementary school. Alma mater is sometimes used as a title of a school's anthem or song. The word "matriculation" is derived from the Latin root word mater. The term suggests that the students are fed knowledge and taken care of by the educational institution. "Alma Mater" is also the title of a song by Chicago and of a different one by Alice Cooper; Morrissey also punned on the phrase for his 1997 single "Alma Matters. "

My NS country is basicly a HUGE university, with campus. The motto "One cannot stay in the cradle forever" is short for the quote "The Earth is the cradle of the mind, but one cannot stay in the cradle forever." by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.
Its flag is taken from the game Alpha Centauri, and shows a man looking through the door to an alien planet.
Tomzilla
19-03-2005, 15:02
I was(and still am) a big fan of the Godzilla films, getting the nickname "Tomzilla". When I found this site, I decided to put my nickname there for the name. My name on X-Box Live is "Sarge Tomzilla" so, that also had influence.
South Osettia
19-03-2005, 15:02
Mine comes from the region of Georgia known as South Ossetia (which I wanted to have but couldn't). I know, I'm a pretty boring guy.
Zombie Lagoon
19-03-2005, 15:27
Mine comes from the song Zombie Nation that i like, but Zombie Nation was taken so I took Zombie Lagoon. I think I also saw Resident evil that day
The Chocolate Goddess
19-03-2005, 15:39
It all started with a sweet party I throw each year... My friends, all wanting to be on the invite list, started to call me Chocolate Countess. Well, I wasn't going to stop there. The world is my truffle.

Chicken pi
19-03-2005, 17:09
When I started my nation, I had no idea what to call it. As I was eating a pie at the time, I decided to call it Chicken Pie only to find the name was taken. At that point, my mum came into the room and suggested that I replace 'pie' with 'pi'. Muttering about crappy names, I created my nation.
Wolfrest
19-03-2005, 17:14
My nation's name was easy! I write play-like-skits and novels for a hobby (No you can't see one) and I made my own nation in one, hince, Republic of Wolfrest :D
Naval Snipers
19-03-2005, 17:16
I love the US Navy and the SEALs are the only ones in the Navy who can be snipers. The rest is pretty much self-explanitory
Heiligkeit
19-03-2005, 17:17
I'm for divine power, holiness...etc

That's why I used the Germn form of sanctity: "Heiligkeit"
Great Scotia
19-03-2005, 17:33
A sport of nationisation of the (posh English) exclaimation "Great Scott!"

I keep getting telegrams from ppl who think I'm Canadian or something :|
Nasopotomia
19-03-2005, 17:37
It's a combination of my usual screen name 'Naselus', and 'Mesopotamia'. Unfortunately, that means that it means 'Land between the two nostrils', in bastardised Latin/Babylonian.
Quentulus Qazgar
19-03-2005, 17:41
Mine is the name for a mountain range in one book by Douglas Adams (I think it was "The life, the universe and everything").
I didn't remember it correctly so it's a bit different than in the book.
Ramissle
19-03-2005, 17:47
I was eight years old, and I used to make pirate maps. Then I started to make country maps, and in one of the countries, called Bonesacke, there was a city called Ram Isle. Ramissle just came from that.

UntiedStates
19-03-2005, 18:53
OOC: Mine is because of the last two elections. The allegations of fraud slung about by both sides is dividing our nation. Hence, the Untied States. Which is my extremely overdone parody of whatever government is in power at the time.

IC: Land of the Brakes home of the Freon, baby.
Fweet
19-03-2005, 19:11
plus a bunch of guys camping and my utterance of the drunkin term "Man that was suckin' fweet!!" over an explosion we made. We laughed about this all night and most of the next..painful day. Then i joined nationstates.if you havent figured it out yet switch the first letters.

Dakini
19-03-2005, 23:07
It means angel in sanskrit.
Muktar
19-03-2005, 23:11
I was looking through a Warhammer book for a name that sounded like it could be a country and found "Al Muktar's Desert Dogs."

When I made in e-mail address so I could join the UN in the early days, I made nsmuktar the account name. Ever since corporations and family members of criminals have been asking me for money.
Kervoskia
19-03-2005, 23:26
I wanted a nation with a Russian or Balkin sounding name.
Neo-Anarchists
19-03-2005, 23:35
My nation name originated with a profound lack of creativity, and a useful prefix.
Jordaxia
19-03-2005, 23:38
My middle name - Jordan
Since everything is cooler with an X, Jordax.
Make it sound like a nation.
Jordaxia. The X is still pronounced like a zed though.

Bam!
Bastard-Squad
19-03-2005, 23:53
Vivan from The Young Ones. His favourite programme was a flick called Bastard Squad.
31
19-03-2005, 23:59
I tried about twenty different names, everyone of them was rejected because it was already used. In frustration I typed the first number I thought of, 31 and the system allowed it.
I hate name choice thingies.
Salutus
20-03-2005, 00:04
first of all, i would like everyone to know that i am infuriated because i started a thread like this once. ;)

i wanted to be 'Neo-sparta' cuz the spartans were hardasses, but that was taken, so i tried 'Salutus Invictus' which i believe means something along the lines of 'one man, unconquered' but that was a no-go, so i shortened it to salutus. maybe that means 'one man?' that'd be pretty cool too, i guess.
Farquel
20-03-2005, 00:09
Farkel is a dice game, but that was taken. I used the name I call it, Farquel.
Huntarian Alliances
20-03-2005, 00:12
This puppet nation's name came in the result of a revolution starting within my main nation of Huntaer. Huntaer is a evil-dark side of the Force main nation, my evil side. Huntarian Alliances is a group of freedom fighters within and outside of Huntaer space who is the good-light side of the force pupet nation.

Basicly, my semi-origonal Jedi and Sith nations mixed with 40k Imperial of Man (IoM) stuff as well.
Free Goths
20-03-2005, 00:14
hehe, I got my name from not being able to afford Hot Topic stuff. My other nation, Yu-Jyo, is from the english spelling of the japanese word for friendship.
Chiwanpan
20-03-2005, 00:20
one word: caffine
Nimharamafala
20-03-2005, 00:20
Well, I had to make my nation quickly and with little imagination becuase my sister was kicking me off the computer. Hence, I started with Nim, thought a bit, added Ha, then got lazy and typed as it came to me adding ra..ma..fa.....la, thinking it was the funniest thing ever.
Shenyang
20-03-2005, 00:21
I openned my "big book of military aircraft" and took the first manufacturer I saw, Shenyang, as my name.
Nianacio
20-03-2005, 00:26
Nianacio:
our nation (English) -> nia nacio (Esperanto) -> nianacio -> Nianacio

Niancio:
Nianacio (correct) -> Niancio (a common misspelling)
Deleuze
20-03-2005, 00:27
From the French theorist Gilles Deleuze. Of others in the Continental school of philosophy (Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, etc), I thought he had the best name for a country. I had also just had an interesting debate about his work a view days earlier.
Steel Butterfly
20-03-2005, 00:36
Steel Butterfly wasn't my original nation name. It is, however, the one that I stuck with. To be honest, I don't remember exactly how it came about, only that it was supposed to be "something strong that normally isn't."
Boonytopia
20-03-2005, 00:53
Named after legendary Aussie cricketer, David Boon. Holder of the beer drinking record on the Melbourne to London flight (52).
ElleDiamonique
20-03-2005, 01:44
ElleDiamonique is not the name I wanted for my nation name - it was supposed to be DiamondGypsy. But, diamondgypsy just didn't sound right as a nation, to me, so I took a part of one of my other membernames that I use on the messageboard circuit - elle - and added diamonique - which is from diamond. No real excitement in the origin of my nation name.
Maledicti
20-03-2005, 01:49
Supposedly Maledicti means 'sinner' or 'accursed' in Latin.
Gnomish Republics
20-03-2005, 01:54
First, it was Turnignomipasia, from Jan Jansen of BGII. Then I went on vacation and made another gnomish republic- Slords (due to downing of T-pasia during the vacation). Then part the second of my vacation came around, and I was once again out. So I unified these two and a bunch of hypothetical other gnomish republics under the umbrella nation "The Commonwealth of Gnomish Republics". My alter ego nation "The Dominion of Gnomish Corporations" is supposed to be a split off of that happened during the Second Post Golden Age Revolution.

I always thought Jan Jansen was a bit of a pain in the arse.

Lascivious Maximus
20-03-2005, 02:17
Lascivious Maximus shares a common element with the first nations I ever made here on NS (I think I had two or three Lasc's back in the day)

This name is the only one of the 'Lasc' names Ive created with more meaning than its surface value. This name and the name of my puppet, form mathematical funtions of one another to describe the duality of man. (My puppets name is a derrivative of this name). I am, it seems, a product of events leading up to even this day - though one particular event in my own historical background seems to have defined, in summation, who I am. So I used the two puppets for a delicately planned RP which I was to execute in the Paradise Club - Lascivious, as the person who I have regretably become - and *puppets name here* as the person who I used to be and strive to return to. They are of course extreme functions of my being - one plays off the negative values of who I have become (Lasc) and one plays off of the positive values of that which I was (puppet). I am divided trying to find between the two extremes, my former self. Sadly though - I have not had the moxy to finish my RP in the club, I sort of left it and my puppet hanging quite some time ago. I really ought to go back in and finish it.

Timothy Zahn is a great author.

My name comes from a contient I created a long time ago in school as part of a fairly involved project. When I went to build a name, it was the first thing I thought of. Maybe if you're lucky, I'll put up a picture of it someday. ;)

Mine is the name for a mountain range in one book by Douglas Adams (I think it was "The life, the universe and everything").
I didn't remember it correctly so it's a bit different than in the book.
....so, does that mean you're "Sorry for the inconvenience" ....?
;)
I guess the upncomin' flick oughtta do you some justice.
Straughn

(THE THEOCRACY OF) Straughn.
Straughn is the last name of this individual i know for many years past and hence, who IMO has undergone some peculiar circumstances and is currently in a status that kind of has me unsure of our relationship in a way that i don't think makes much sense to anyone who hasn't endured something similar. Basically he turned from nihilist/absolutist after his first cancer remission, although that polarity was a strange contention in his living versus his spiritual pursuits (hence "Not today, i don't feel like it" motto)
After many strange phantasmic situations he and i were mutually in, he made a choice that was fairly detrimental to our relationship, and after many years of reflection and experience, he apologized and we began communicating with the perspective now of our mutual spiritual discontent with current events and their significance - i named the nation then after him, after being intro'd by a mutual friend who is currently in the no-com zone in Iraq and intelligence ... and so far along with the tumult of his pursuits some (one or two) less than honourable people jumped him and caved in his skull on both sides, so he is again awaiting something i don't think i yet understand in a hospital bed, being kept from contact of his peers by his family since they know there is almost no one he could trust. The strange thing is when the transgression occurred that faulted us, i was writing a book (still sorta am) where he met a strange limbo after a severe cranial trauma and began to float free, while influencing people with varying nihilist/absolutist thoughts and impressions. And so now this happens and we both wait. I don't think i can explain this well. But that's why the name.

I dunno. I was just drawing pictures one day on a scrap piece of paper and drew a near-future battle on it. When I made a flag for one of the sides, I put a star surrounded by lightning bolts jutting out of it. I then thought "Hmmm, this seems like a good Imperial flag..."

And the rest is history.

Meh. Manuel Amador Guerrero was better than Simon Bolivars New Granada. How corrupt it was...

I mean, they even fought their civil war in Panama! Talk about abuse of provinces! Thank goodness Presidente Amador came around to make sure Panama wasn't bossed around by those nutjobs in Bogota.

Feindseligkeit
20-03-2005, 08:40
My nation's name means animosity or hostility in German. I was thinking about creating a militaristic dictatorship and I thought it would be a fitting name. I just entered in all the words that came to mind about dictatorships till I found one that wasn't taken already.

"Nation Name" was taken the last time I checked. "Insert Name" may not be, though I imagine "insert name here" is taken or was at some point.

Edit: I just checked, and "insert name" is taken.

Sharazar
20-03-2005, 12:32
When first creating my nation i tried using a series of carefully thought out names, or names that i usually use online. :)

They were all taken. Every last one. :(

So i started typing things in at random. The first dozen or so of them were taken as well.

But then Sharazar worked, so i've been stuck with it ever since. :D

I wanted to have a crazy economical/militaristic nation that totally eats up all resources and grow like crazy.

Once our nation is totally devoid of resources and on the downturn, we just invade someone elses country and keep on moving.

We are like Locust. And we cannot be stopped. Muahahah
Cambridge Major
20-03-2005, 13:34
Mine is the name of the ringing method that I was in the throes of learning when I created my nation. Cambridge refers to the actual method, and Major to the number of bells (eight). I would put in a link to a diagram, but it would take half an hour for me to find one on this appalling connection, and in any case, I cannot imagine that anyone would want to read it

Oh, also - it is not, as someone once thought, a boast about having a degree from Cambridge!!

Now, my hearing is not as good as it used to be, and all I hear now is the whispering.
You Forgot Poland
21-03-2005, 18:01
So I was playing Risk one time and boy, lemme tell you. It was a real knock-down drag-out battle. Things were looking grim for the tiny green plastic soliders of You Forgot Poland: We had Australia and New Zealand, but the tiny black plastic soldiers were sweeping across Eurasia like locusts. They were doing horrible things to the tiny plastic women of Belgium and Russia. But I had a big pile of tiny little soldiers in Poland, and they held off the invasion. It was a miracle. Then those tiny Poles swept out and liberated Europe! It was a grand day for Poles everywhere! We had a tiny tickertape parade! We vowed never to forget!

And then that damned Texan chimpanzee stole my line.
