I am from Canada and the age of consent is 14... not 18.

There are however, certain restrictions on sexuality between the ages of 14 and 18. More specifically, it is illegal to have sex with anyone between the ages of 14 and 18 if you are in any sort of position of power over them. Thusly, teachers cannot have sex with their fourteen year old students, for example. The same goes for religious leaders, sports coaches, and pretty much anybody else who runs a youth program of some variety.

This can lead to situations like a person who is 18 years and 15 minuts old being imprisioned and labeled a sex offender by having sex with someone who is 17 years and 364 days old. Even worse, some states do not allow consentual sex between minors. In these states two teenagers can be arrested for getting it on. Usually, it is the boy who is arrested and prosecuted because of sexist policies and prejudices.

Another big problem with statutory rape laws is that almost none require intent. "She looked 21" isn't a defense against statutory rape. Neither is " Her driver's liscense said that she was 21." Depending on the state you are in neither is "He put a gun to my face and raped me." After all, if the crime doesn't require intent it also doesn't require the consent of the perperatrator unless specificly stated in the law.

No, its not bullshit and it is used quite often. It was enacted to help prevent sex tourism. The government uses it all time, mostly against US citizens going to poor countries where they can obtain sex with children in exchange for money. Originally, the law said that it was illegal to travel to another country for the purposes of having sex with a minor, but that didnt work because all you needed to prove was that you had other motives for travelling and just decided to do that while you were there. So, they deleted that language and now it doesnt matter what your reason for going was.

I think most "age of consent" laws are fucked up, basedo n the fact that people mature physically and mentally at different rates. I myself am 19, but people think that i'm twice that age sometimes, while a friend of mine is 25 and is confused for a minor whenever we go out to the bars. (I'm in Canada, so stop looking at me like that).

I myself believe that certain teenagers are capable of raping adults, and certain teenagers are emotionally mature enough to handle sexual intercourse. I also believe that an arbitrary distinction, seperating a couple who are less than two years apart in age difference from sexual activity, is useless.

What I think should be promoted is parents taking responsibility for their children and teaching them morals, rationality, and consequences for their actions. It is not the state's responsibility to instil common sense into the populace, just a waste of taxpayer's money over draconian laws.

Depends. If you're 19 or under and from Missouri, you would not have commited a crime. Each state's laws varies - it is NOT uniformly 18. In Missouri, it is legal to go as low as 14 if you are no more than 4 years older. On the other hand Wisconsin (As far as I know) is 18, no discussion. I would suppose that the '18' idea came about because there might be a nationwide standard concerning interstate or internation relations, wherein they deferred to the highest age any US state requires.

I believe that the age of consent should be 17 with anyone over the age of 21, but 15 with a 4-year proviso for anyone 20 or younger. There's a BIG difference between two fifteen year olds messing around, and a fifteen year old and a thirty year old.

Edit: Actually, I could make it a lot simpler to understand without changing much of anything. If you're 21 and up, you can go to 17. If you're 20 or under, you can go to 15.

Actually, in the USA it varies from state to state, the oldest (as in my home state, Oregon) being 18 and the youngest being 16. I've heard rumors of some southern states having 15 or 14 but I've checked on that and it's not true.

No I am saying if a person of either sex has gone through puberty then they should legally be able to have sex. Being jumped on by the nearest male without the girls consent would still be illegal if the girl didnt consent to it because it would be rape.

You say it's weird, but you know, I think that sounds very reasonable, especially compared to what a lot of laws currently are. I mean, think about it. Take the age of consent of 18, the way it is in a number of U.S. states. That's a little ridiculous, isn't it, to say you're not mentally competent to make the decision of having sex until the same time you're legally an adult? I mean, if you want to get into analogies, the government trusts you with a multi-ton hunk of metal (car) before your own body? It's also incredibly unrealistic. And of course, say a 16- and 17-year-old are in a physical relationship, then both their birthdays pass, suddenly if they have sex the older one can get jailed. But then again, you get THAT same problem no matter what age you set it at. If you say 16, then you just lower the ages of the example people by two years and it's the same situation. But you have to have an age of consent law to protect children, that's why it exists in the first place. Thus the dilemma.

That right there seems like a perfectly reasonable solution. It allows for human adolescent biology while keeping the age-difference window narrow enough to protect from pedophiles and other people that might take advantage of a minor. And of course it keeps genuine kids safe from all ages.
