Yays and Boos On GT4

There seem to be a lot of gamers on, so I'll do this now in the hopes that at the very least the thread won't fade instantly-even if it's people telling me "PS2 Sux! Project Gotham Pwns! You re teh luser!"

So-I only have a PS because of GT. I have other games but none of them prompted me to buy a system. I love racing simulators. Live for 'em. GT is still king, and some things are cool and some aren't so much-

Yay! The game is frickin' huge!!!

Boo! The game is frickin' huge!! Where the hell do you start? What are you going to buy that isn't going to be a one race pony? I read the book cover to cover and it barely helped. The guide is supposed to be online but I haven't found it. Whats that? I have to buy a book to understand the game? Cheap...

Yay! New physics. Crap the cars are harder to drive.

Yay! I can take money from my GT3 game.

Boo! No qualifying on all races, only some. You could always skip it if you didn't want to, but it was a great way to find out before commiting to the race that you brought something too fast or too slow. Extra Boo-no qualifying on the speedway enduro-I really want to know I'm on pace before I commit to the race, and being too fast is just as boring as being too slow.

Yay! Old old old cars. Model T old. 1886 Benz-Patent Wagen old. Sweet.

Boo!-Why do I have to turn off the traction control computer off on my 1886 Benz-Patent Wagen?? How and why did it get one?

Related Boo!-Mod chips on carborated cars from the 60s?

Yay!-The Caterham!

Boo!-I can't drive it anywhere! What the hell? 60 grand for a track day car? And I don't get to find that out until after I buy the car? It's a lucky thing I didn't use my sparce cash to buy it for the lightweight race....

Minor related Boo!-No real Super 7. At least as far as I know.

Yay! GT points to reward drivers for having good races, not just stomp fests.

Boo! I don't get to know what I'm going to earn until the race starts. "Ah, one point? I'm goin to kill them...crap, now I have to forfiet and there goes my win precentage." Or the other way around, "250? Oh man, I hope I don't get lapped..."

Unexpected Yay! B-Spec mode. No way in hell I thought this was a good idea. 1/3 of the miles I've run so far have been B-Spec (though 1000 of those where all at once when I was experimenting with the 1000 race in the europe league. Unless the ment kilometers...that just occuored to me.....anyway, it took three hours, which brings me to-

Related Yay-I can speed up game time in B-spec mode so a 3 hour race take 1. Will certainly come in handy in one of the 3 24-hour races...good lord...

Related Boo! I can only do that on the extra boring race moniter screen.

Yay! Both local tracks (Infeneon (Sears Point) Raceway and Laguna Seca)!!! The former is a track I've actually raced enduro karts on. Sweetness.

More Yay! Sarthe! Nurbering! Damn those tracks are hard.

Unexpected Yay! Photo Mode. Alright, I'm a filmmaker and am doing documentaries on cars. I should have realized that I would end up spending way too much time taking pretty photos of my cars. Photo drive mode is extra cool. Getting the perfect shot of my '63 Z06 Corvette was funner that I thought when I scoffed at the idea originally...

Boo!-Not every car has a race for it. Like my Z06.

Yay!-Track meets to make up for that. Though I can't get it to just send period cars against it, so partial boo.

Yay!-Taking my 1970 Chevelle 454 and beat the modern NA cars in the corners. I love tuning. (Having that TVR pull me on the striaght going up the hill on Trial Mt. and then taking him on the big turn at the top in my big ugly muscle car...you know that had to sting...)

Boo!-Unbuyable cars. Which means I have to win them. Which means I don't get to choose the color. I wanted a black or silver 300SL Gullwing, I got red.

Boo!-Unbalanced entries. I get 1 point for the 1000 and can cream 4 of the 5 cars, but don't have a prayer of catching that Cobra in my Ginetta. That makes it a two car race with four track hazards. In one there was a Citreon 2CV, the tin snail...the only reason I won one of the vintage races was the Cobra nailed that little bastard on the straight...)

Yay!-So many prize cars and only one so far has been a Skyline. Damn I was sick of getting Skylines in GT3. I was afraid that "600 cars" would mean "400 different Skylines"....

Yay!-Tons of tracks.

Boo!-Tons of tracks. I've only unlocked a third of them and there already is no way I'm going to learn them all.

This is getting too long. I'll add later providing anyone cares.

GT4 is incredible. The graphics are better than any game I have ever seen before. The game is incredibly expansive, and the physics are incredibly rendered.

With that said, this game is incredibly boring and frustrating when you start out. It seems so slow compared to other racing game at the start, and I have not yet become accustomed to it. That and I prefer the rally racing which I can't do at this point.

I have to agree with the ferrari thing, and Lambos now that they have more than one in their line-up.

Also, as a Porsche fanatic, the RUF thing leaves me wanting. First of all, in reality, the RUF cars are as moded as you can get so the idea of 'sporting them up' seems weak. RUF should be in the tuners corner (another Yay, tuners corner). With real Porsche's there I have the possibiliy of 914s and 944s...and maybe the 917....salivate....917 vs Ferrari 512, old school Le Mans stylie....ohoh-against the GT40, the race that never got to happen!!! Now I want to cry...

Forgot one-
Yay! Can-Am cars!!!!!!!!!!! Words cannot express!

Boo!- So far the only one I've seen is a Toyota. No hope for the legendary 917/30 with its 1100hp....

Bonus Yay-The Chapperal J2, which now that I think about it is a Can-Am car, but even cooler-those big fans on the back? "Officially" its to draw air over the engine to cool it under that housing. Where does it draw the air from? Under the car-like the Lotus F1 car that was legal only long enough for it to warm up, it literally suctions itself to the ground. Kick-ass.

sounds a hell of a lot like the car Brabham raced at the '78 Dutch GP, they had a fan on the back to suck air from under it...it just stuck to the road, won the race by a mile, and was promptly banned

I could have swore that was the Lotus-I may have mixed them up. I tend to think anything daring, inovated and immediately banned comes from Lotus...ah, Mr. Chapman, you kicked ass....

he did indeed, legend

they (Lotus) had a car in 82 (i think) that had two chassis...one for the aerodynamics etc, one for the driver...because the driver was being put under so much pressure by ground effect that they couldnt safely get any more

so with two chassis, they could use stronger ground effect etc, and still have someone who was able to drive the thing

Yeah, their not for everyone, especially one like GT4-which is why I am really bummed about the removal of the on-line mode. I want to play against other good drivers, not my friends who are humoring me and slaming into the walls. It's not thier fault they don't like the game, but I want some competition, dammit...

Definately looking that car up-that is sooo cool.

I like that Chapmans curse continued past his death, when Lotus returned to Le Sarthe (he had said that he wouldn't go to Le Mans because they just don't like him there after having his umpteenth car DQ'd) with the Elise GT1 the car was DQ'd again on an after the fact technicality (though if I recall correctly, the rule was there to hobble the Porsches which people where concerned would out exclusive the class. So the CLK-GTR did instead....)

Back in fifteen, when I get home.

Definitely boo...

No online mode, no damadge model, and on the 600 or so cars: Well, I personally don't care for 95% percent of them (Microcars? Please... why?).

With so many leagues, it is simply getting out of hand. I want to finish a game by myself and don't want to have to watch my great grandchildren do it.

hmm...i think the car is the Lotus 88

*checks*

yup, the Lotus 88, and it was '81, not '82 as i thought

If Chapman hadnt died he would have been in jail for many years, so Lotus were (unfortunately) going to lose him either way...

Sorry to put a downer on things, but nay. Didnt like the first 3, not even gonna try this one. Racing isn't 4 everyonje. Esp. when there's not a single bike involved. Maybe a Fireblade would get me interested :) .

Ruf is a manufacturer and its cars get their own separate VINs from Porsche cars by Germany. RUF also has many states of tune and their cars can be upgraded beyond what RUF offers.

Also Porsche and Ferrari are both obligated to other companies and they are not legally allowed to let their cars be used in GT4.

But both Porsche's and Ferraris have been in other games. As I understood it, Porsche had an exclusivity for Need for Speed Porsche's Unlimited, but that expiered. Unless they signed up again with Project Gotham. Either way, the lack of both is still a boo. RUFs VIN not withstanding. I still like RUFs and as a kid those and Kramers where my poster cars, I just want the other Porsches. I mean I get to drive a ghia.

I likey the mini-cars, but thats me. I'm not crazy about most of the Japanese cars, and those are most of the cars. (They are good cars, but not what I'm about as cars go. I always put it this way, the Japanese are passionate about technology and the car is a vessel for that, and expression of it. The Europeans are passionate about the car itself. There are blured lines there, certainly Mr. Honda was very much all about cars and the Germans can seem a little clinical, but with my big favorite-Porsche-they've stuck with a strange idea until it worked (rear engine). anyway...)

I have to say that the size is daunting. I've been going at it a solid week and just hit the 25% required mark to enter the enduros. Those are going to be tough going, which makes the B-spec mode valued. I've had to step away because I can't get the Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR to get up to pace in the final race in Pro League. Against the Group C cars that are in there I don't think it's goinna happen. Maybe I can get that Peugot Group C. (another sniffle for the lack of Porsches, no 962. Oooh-XJ9. How do I get that....)

A big one I forgot that you touched on-

Boo!-Still no third dimension. Not so realistic if I can't flip the car. Hot Wheels, leading the way.....still not as bad as the first game, where my tightly wound Griffith would literally pop up on two wheels at a 45 degree angle through the turns. It was damn silly. I did it anyway, that car was cool and it looked funny in the replays.

That's kick ass. Gotta love a car so scary that its banned as soon as they pull it out of the truck. I didn't know that Chapman was involved in the DeLorean thing. The blurb I read didn't say how or what he did, but it really is too bad. Where are the Ferdinand Porsches, the Graham Chapmans, the Enzo Ferraris?

Maybe Don Panoz counts. I really do like that guy. I was hoping the real Esperante would be in the game. One of the professors drives one around here....lucky bastard. Or the AIV-it'd make the Prowler even sillier than it already is.

Reminded-

Yay!-The DeLorean!! And the hot rodding to make that car as cool as it looks (you may have to have been introduced to that car as a kid when it came out to think that...) I've won a suprising number of races in it. Though why is it listed as a 2004? Is someone remanufacturing it?

also-

Yay!- Manufacturing politics! The Cobra is listed as both a Shelby and an AC. hehehehe.

But both Porsche's and Ferraris have been in other games.

Your point? I said both Porsche and Ferrari are obligated to companies other than SCEA(Publisher of GT4). Both Ferraris and Porsches have appeared in many games.

As I understood it, Porsche had an exclusivity for Need for Speed Porsche's Unlimited, but that expiered. Unless they signed up again with Project Gotham. Either way, the lack of both is still a boo.

It is what it is. Do you fault mankind for not being able to break the laws of physics? GT4 can not have Porsche and Ferrari in the game even if they wanted them to be included. No point in blasting the makers for not doing something they couldn't do.

I'm not blasting the the makers, it's what I would have liked to have seen. I'm not writting angry letters and picketing thier offices-I would have liked those cars to be there. I didn't know that Chapman was involved in the DeLorean thing. The blurb I read didn't say how or what he did, but it really is too bad. yea, Lotus did the suspension (i think) and maybe the chassis as well, but im not too sure

he would have been in jail for fraud...he was mixed up in DeLorean siphoning off a whole load of government money

still a brilliant engineer though

Thats really too bad. Seems like around that time Lotus was building a lot of peoples suspensions-wasn't that around the same time that Izuzu started badging their cars with "Handling by Lotus" ? That explains why my video game DeLorean is so damn solid. Sooo cool to watch the replays of that thing stalking down Mustangs and Camaros...

Brings me to another-

Yay!- Finding out there are countries that I didn't even know built cars (Netherlands? Cool!) and what some of their hotter rides are. (It gives the impression that Australia is the land where the muscle car never died, thus re-enforcing my Mad Max image of that country (sorry guys-but at least it's not Steve Iwrin...eh? eh?....sorry))

Geez, calm down.

Where is that comment coming from?

I'm saying if they've appeared in many games it seems they could appear in one more because at that point it doesn't seem all that exclusive.

It is exclusive because of the time at which the game is released. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 is no longer a real competitor for a game like GT4 or Forza. Much older games are also no longer competitors. As such it matters a great deal whether or not Porsche or Ferrari are in GT4. Many people I know simply aren't buying GT4 because they are going to buy Forza, which will have Ferrari among others.

I'm not blasting the the makers, it's what I would have liked to have seen. I'm not writting angry letters and picketing thier offices-I would have liked those cars to be there. You are faulting the game for not doing something it can't do. There is no point in that. Especially when the makers of the game went to the effort to include Ruf, essentially trying to put Porsche into the game.

Seriously, relax. You are clearly the master of industry information. I bow to your individual knowledge on the ins and outs of liscence. Project Gotham just didn't seem that old, and some of the Le Mans games. Didn't seem that big a deal. I'm wrong-there was some liscence deal that I didn't know about-it was just speculation about, and this part is important-a game.

The fact remains, while I acknowledged that I like the RUF cars I would have liked it if the actual Porsches where in the game because there are Porsches that RUF doesn't modify that I would have liked to drive. If you are so bent out of shape about the things that I would have liked to see, then focus on all the good things I said about the game.

Thing is, I like Ridge Racer but I dared to dream of a game with real cars. I liked Need for Speed, but I dared to dream of more control over the cars. I liked GT1 but I dared to dream that there would be more cars. I'm perfectly capable of enjoying a perfectly good, nah-great game, and still wish, no matter how impossible, that it would include something it doesn't or can't. I wouldn't, and am not, getting worked up about it. Just some harmless wishing. And I certainly am not going to get worked up over it's impossibility. It'd still be nice. No harm no foul. Relax.

Ooooh, man....soooo deep. You're advantage is going to be that by the time you get it some cats will have already gone through it so you can have some guide as to what you'll need. (like don't buy the Caterham until you got money to burn)

I just got the Chaparral 2J, that screams...it's still not fast enough to handle the last race of proffesional league, I'm gonna need a Group C car. The Jag is 3.5 mill....I got some race whoring to do...(the German touring championship gets you a CLK-GTR which you can sell for @ 700,000) Stuff like that.

And since there is no on-line mode you're not behind any learning curve.

Oh for the love of....fine-

I hearby recend any notion that I would have liked to see actual Porsche's in the game and publicly apologize to any of the game designers who may have read this, or designers children who may have read this and-despite the fact that I spent most of the time praising a game I still consider my favorite of all time, might have been troubled by the notion that their daddies or mommies where somehow less of a person. I was clearly a fool to express any desire whose application might be not be immediatly possible. I was foolish not to look into the up to the minute liscencing for all parties before I expressed any desire, no matter how fleeting or small. I hope that I have not irrevocably ruined any lives with my reckless daydreaming.

I can only hope that we can now get past this and get back to celebrating and enjoying the game.

You're pretty much a dumbass you know that? I made a simple explanation about why Porsche and Ferrari aren't in the game, and personally I do see it as foolish to "boo, no Ferrari or Porsche" when they can't be in the game. Didn't say a thing about not having the desire for them to be in the game. You're the only person here who has gotten bent out of shape and who needs to relax.

Hell, here is a real "boo" about the game. taken from another forum.

"Before anyone gets their underpants in a bunch I want you to know I am NOT a video game freak but find myself cordinated enough to get through a game.

So I get charged up by seeing all of the posts on F-chat about how great PS2 and GT4 is.." it's so real", "it's awesome", "the tracks are right on the money". So I go out and buy the entire package...hook it up to the big screen and stereo. I am jazzed because it looks great..sounds great..and can't wait to tackle my favorite track..Laguna Seca. I instruct there and enjoy it very much.

I don't disagree with these comments except for this...this game is NO WHERE NEAR DRIVING THE REAL THING. Not even close..

I can't keep a car on the track, I can't control the freaking car with the controller..etc. Hell I even went out and bought the steering wheel and pedals. What a joke !!!!!

I am frustrated (but laughing at the whole thing) and I think this game is a complete rip-off. Go jump in a car and spend $200 on an open track event. No substitution for the real thing. Leave the video games to Pac Man - Frogger - or Pong.

I just however, believe the video game has been talked up a bit too much or I was Gary..Gary Gullable for believing how "real" it would be. I am still laughing how I ending up spinning in turn 1 (at Leguna Seca) when turn 1 is not even a turn..but rather a small elevation and light wheel correction to set-up into the real turn...turn 2 (double apex if you want). I spun on what i consider a straigh away in an M-3 !!!!!

I just suck at the game and I believe the remote control funtions are non realistic, oversensitive, and just plain over engineered."

Which is why you got so bent out of shape that you wrote a rather stupid rant of sorts with basically no provocation.

Cheers, but you still need to relax.
Dude, your point has been conceeded, I was a fool to have dreamed or to share that dream. Are you going to actually add anything to the discussion or just keep throwing wet blankets? Because there are a ton of abortion/gay rights/political threads where you can be as contrarian as you like, you know...

And, in the hopes of getting back on track (no pun intended):

I just did my first dirt rally (futiley, but only because I really wanted to use my new Jenson Interceptor that I thought there was a special race for, but there isn't...) and

Yay!- On the suicide king photographers that run out in the road and then scramble back as you approach! That's damn cool. Now if I could get my Jenson to deal with the dirt better...

Hell, here is a real "boo" about the game. taken from another forum.

Meh. The game was $50, so I already saved $150, and my car is a '67 Bus, so the excitement level is going to be pretty limited.

If he's upset about the physics in this game he should have seen the first one where I set up a Griffith so tight it would literally stand on its side through the turns. That ain't right.

I raced a lot growing up and understand the difference between the real and controlling a car through a stick on a controler. A great deal of real driving is feel that cannot be simulated on a game. Still, Night Driver<Pole Position<Ridge Racer<Need for Speed<GT4<Real Life. But also: What I can afford<The Real Thing. This is as close as I can get, it's still fun. I'll take it.

I also understand the difference between flying a real plane and dogfighting in a video game. I understand that Pong does not acurately simulate Ping Pong. I can live in a world where both exist.

I can understand where he's coming from, if I was an instructor at Laguna Seca I wouldn't need this game either. But I'm not.

There are worse stereotype impressions you can have. V8s & hot sixes have been in Aus since the mid 60s & they haven't yet gone out of fashion. Ford Australia use the Mustang 5.4 V8 and a locally made 4.0 straight six in the Falcon. Holden use the Corvette 5.7 V8 in their Commodore & Monaro coupe. Don't know if you know, but the Monaro is exported to the USA as (I'm pretty sure) the Pontiac GTO.

I did, though only because of the good folks on NS (when the GTO came over someone here pointed it out). I'm hoping I can do a Monaro vs. GTO deal to see how they measure up in the game. I don't think that they tapped the GTO heritage very well with the rebadged Monaro, so I'm 'boycotting' that car.

The racing Falcon was my suprise car in GT3. I didn't think much of it when I got it, but once I started racing it I was really taken. So unfair that you cats get to keep the Falcon...Ford saves all thier best stuff for the right-hand drive countries...(though I have to say the new Mustang looks pretty kick ass-but I thought that about the last one and eventually that feeling faded...)

In GT2 and GT3 the Corvette C5R was my racing workhorse, despite having a slight aversion to Corvettes due to the 60s rivalry between Corvette and Porsche (I hold onto the grudge regardless of the fact that I was born after the fact...) I'm trying to find a new workhorse in this game, and I think it's going to be the new black racing Camaro (not much of a drift, I know...). I used the Oreca Viper in the first GT because I met those guys at a race at Laguna Seca and they where the coolest guys. They struck up the conversation with me and talked about the choice of Viper vs. the Porsches and regular small talk. Great guys. That car and Paul Newman's 300ZX, because it was cool that it was in there.

I read an article in I think Road & Track about someone taking a Porsche Turbo down some 900 mile road you guys have that doesn't have a speed limit. If I could get accustomed to driving on the wrong side of the road (:)) I'd like to check that out one day. Oh, and all the native beauty and splender that is yadda yadda iwannadrivefast...

I agree, it's not real, it's a game. It's the closest game to real & that's why I love it. I'm never likely to be able to drive these cars/tracks in my life, so I really enjoy trying them out in the GT series.

I'm a real Porsche fan, so I would have loved to have seen them in it.

Yeah, I heard the Monaro didn't really translate as well to the US as we here thought it would. There are some differences with Aus/US versions, due to the left hand conversion & moving the fuel tank. I can't remember what they are though.

I always liked the RX7s for my stock cars. They were great sharp handling cars, nice & light and could be tuned pretty well. There were plenty of racing versions too. The only downside is they don't make the bulk kilowatts that things like the Vipers/Corvettes/Skylines do. For that I turned to the Mazda 7B78 (? can't remember the exact name, it was the Le Mans car, green & orange) in GT3.

In the Northern Territory most open highways have an unrestricted speed limit. I drove my Peugeot 306 up there & had it going 205km/h (on the speedo), which was a huge buzz. Not bad either for a 2.0 hatchback. It was nice & stable at that speed too.

The post '93 RX-7s are beautiful cars, and a thrill to drive in this game. The 787B (I think thats it) is fantastic, especially as this is the only game I know of that has Group C cars (Another BIG YAY!). I'm glad that this version has added the Silk Cut (though it isn't called that, cause the game is sold to kids) Jaguar and the Mercedes Group C (whatever it's called, I mean aside from Silver Arrow which they call all thier racers...) You need a Group C car to finish out the Pro League.

Right now I'm in the middle of the Grand Valley Enduro (checking posts on pitstops). I thought the Camaro would be even with the other cars. Nope. It's running away from them. However, I'm making three pitstops to their one on medium tires. It'll be interesting to see if I'm really that much faster or will the fewer stops pay out for them. I think it'll be the latter.

I live in Northern California (right between Infenion and Laguna Seca, Yay! for me). When I was a little kid there where some 'open' roads in Nevada, but loooooong gone by the time I was a teenager in my Malibu (Classic....a long way from the muscle car, but was worth the nothing I paid for it-inheretence...)

A friend of mine recently moved officially into a Porsche collection picking up a '89 944 Turbo to add to his '73 914 2.0. I'm sooo damn jealous. One of these days...well probably not, I didn't really chose a lucrative field to go into in life.

Good thing there's GT...

The Grand Valley enduro was always my fave race in the originall GT. It's very satisfying to win in a clearly inferior car.

I reckon Bathurst, hear in Aus, is a great track. I'm disappointed that one didn't get in.

I wish I had the $ to get into Porsche collecting too. :( That is much of the beauty of GT though.

I'm getting the mixed bag, superior car with far inferior tire strategy, which is making it close. I was hoping to let the B-Spec take over for a stint, but the race is too close.

Watkin's Glen, Road Atlanta, Sebring and Daytona (the road course) would be cool. Australian tracks, too. I like Surfer's Paradise-I was starting to own on that track in TOCA World Championship. But as it is (I think I stated this earlier) the shear number of tracks are daunting as it is. I don't know that I'll ever learn them all. (Thanks to B-Spec mode, though, I never have to run my least favorite tracks-Deep Forest and SS Route 11. I just suck out loud on those tracks no matter what I do.)

I should add a bonus, invite people to list the tracks that they feel are their 'home tracks,' ones that if they are on the list you almost immediately consider them a lock even if you have to drive a tricycle.

Mine would be:
Laguna Seca, Infenion (true of my location as well), Trail Mountain, and Midfield.

I'm good on other tracks (Grand Valley is a blast), but those I feel are home. If I lose on them it hurts deep down in the pride.

My home track is Trial Mountain. If anyone beats me there I get really shitty. The other ones I love are Grand Valley, Apricot Hill & Laguna Seca. Deep Forest & SS R11 I really like! What's bending my mind at the moment though is the Nurburgring, it's just incredible.

I'm bound and determined to figure out Nurbering. At first I would just run B-Spec on it because I didn't want to lose the race slamming back and forth in the wall.

But I found the Photo Drive mode and spent a really long time on the track trying to get some good photos of my 300SL Gullwing and Ginetta G4, so I'm starting to get it. Still a long road to go. (Lap 41 of 60 on the enduro and I'm coming out of the pits in 3rd)

I hope to turn Le Sarthe into a home track soon. I hope to actually go to Le Sarthe some time soon....

I have to spend some serious time on it for the licence testing. I got 9:09 for the ia licence, but I'm finding it bloody hard to get around the entire track for the Special licence.

La Sarthe is made. Near 400km an hour speeds & there seems no end to it! The marker boards just flash by.

I believe that using a program called X-link and a wireless router you can play GT4 online by fooling the game into thinking that the internet is just some big LAN...

If you could explain that to me like I was a child I would be all over that. Unfortunately I'm not the most savvy with moding anything. I currently am connected to the internet through one big ass network, so I'm halfway there (unless I have to do something to the hub, then I'm bone)
