Money to burn: PS2 or Xbox

The Force Majeure
18-03-2005, 22:39
So I have a nice paycheck coming up, and was wondering if I should blow it on a video game system. Which one should I get? Why?

I've seen many listings on ebay for systems plus 10 games or so. Is that a good way to go? I played Halo 2 online with my kid brother a few days ago; it was pretty fun....so I'm leaning towards an Xbox.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just for halo/halo 2.

Wait a little and buy XBox 360 supposed to come out this fall?

Or, buy a Neo Geo, the only console that can make you poor. :P

At the moment I'd say buy an XBox, but in the end it really depends on what type of games you like. The PS2 has all those cool niche games like the Way of the Samurai- and the Kengo-serieses.

Compared to the Xbox, the PS2 is an inferior peice of hardware. Unless your into the few exculsives left on the PS2, like the Final Fantasy Series or any RPGs like that, the Xbox does not have too many (except fable, which is pretty good). But for pretty much everything else, it looks much better on the Xbox, and since they are the same price, why go for the one that gives you less bang for your buck? Besides, the Xbox has Halo 2, which happens to be one of the most awesome online games. Also, if you got the dough and broadband, go for Xbox Live. If you got other people you know that also have Xbox Live, it is awesome to go around with the Party system in Halo 2 and have 16 people play at one time. If you want online, the PS2 in nothing compared to the Xbox's online support.

XBOX. Better games, nicer graphics, cooler XBOX live.

dont buy either. Spend the money on kick-butt parts for your computer. Consols are not worth the money. You should listen to me, it took me five consols and about $1,000 before I realized what I just said to you.

What? never. Don't go too far into game consoles, but having one is nice.

My opinion: Wait. Xbox 2 is coming out soon, and PS3, which will essentially revolutionize gaming with its processer, is coming out late this year. That is, of course, if everything goes well. Really, wait for the new systems.
EDIT: Crap! You beat me to it!

Actually, I'd wait for XBOX2

i'd go with xbox, but also when ya buy it get a warranty with it, now the new xbox is gonna suck with its features because microsoft is getting rid of alot of the stuff that made the first xbox awesome:
1) there will be no hard drives in the new xbox system, you will have to buy a mem card for it,
2)you will have to buy a modem piece for it because microsoft is not gonna have the onboard modem like the first one did,
3) the new xbox will only be able to play it's games, not the first xbox's games so you will have to keep the first xbox i you like playing your xbox titles

so if you were gonna with the new new systems coming out soon, i would choose the playstation..

Please, don't buy the Cell chip hype.

Did you forget the Sony claims for the Emotion Engine that they weren't allowed to sell PS2 into Iraq, because they were supposed to be powerful enough to be used as missile guidance systems? It's all just PR.

Never the less, the next round of the "console wars" shall be interesting.

I'm a consol fan because I only have to check one thing to see if it'll work on the machine I have. PS2? Yep. Great, the game works and I don't have to install crap. Some people like dicking around with all thier stuff, and you can get a game that is deeper and more complex on the computer, but if your just shooting stuff a console is all you need.

The PS2 has the library. You will find something you dig in there. Soooo many people with Xbox's might as well just call it thier Halo machine. One game does not a console make.

But really, look at the games you want to play and then the system that best lets you do that. I like racing games and Project Gotham, while it has its good points, fell short. With the GT series and racing sim games I had to go with the PS2. The people I know who like shooters seem to like the XBox. I can't stand shooters so I'm a terrible judge. Just go to the video game store, count the games you want and from which system. Pick the one that has the most you want to play. Likely they'll have both systems running if you want to compare how the same game plays on each system.

I can't stand the XBox's controller. Some like it. Some people like Salt and Vinegar chips too, though....

your best bet is to go to a game store like gamstop or game crazy and buy it there, plus thier warranty entitles that if your xbox fails, they will replace it with a brandspankin' new one,(that is if you bought a new one from them)

Depends on how ure going to proceed after getting the console; no doubt the Xbox has the best games (Halo, Fable etc) and better graphics, but the PS2 has more good games.

I'll start the war of, if nobody minds?

I hate PS2 consoles. They're black and ugly.

XBOX is green with an X. Its so much cooler. It can hold 4 players at once, unlike PS2

With taps you can play up to eight on the PS2.

You can play with four players using an adaptor, but there aren't that many games supporting four players on the PS2.

That I have to give up. Xbox Live you can see whos online no matter what they're playing and communicate with each other, it blocks people using mods and gamesharks and the like. It really is much better. But, it's also not free. It's not expensive either.

True, PS2 is free, but XBOX live as so much more to offer. It's not expensive at all. 12months for $50? That is cheap.

Get the XBox. The S-type controllers are great. They phased out the big shitty ones a long time back.

If your paycheck will cover another $35, get an xecuter and solder that shit in there. Drop in a bigger harddrive and load the bitch up with emulators. Frikkin awesome.

The only gripe I have with LIVE is that the games are hosted on a player'S XBox rather then on a dedicated server. This makes especially Steel Battalion a real pain...

Meh, I prefer the PS2 quite a bit, but if your gut feeling is with getting an Xbox I'd suggest you get that, as they're both good choices.
However as said the Xbox 2 is likely to be released later in the year, and the PS3 probably at some time in 2006. However they are going to be as usual very expensive when they are first released, so it may not really be worth the wait if you feel like just playing some games now.
Anyway, kinda overlong of me just to say that I think you should go with your feeling and get an Xbox. :)

Well, if you can do the soldering yourself... the chips themselves are cheap, but I recently took a look at the soldering plans. And I must say, no, I'm definitely not skilled enough. ;)

Also don't forget that modding the box may result in a LIVE ban.

For the harddrive, yeah, but you can get the mod chip for 35 beans. And harddrives are cheap. I crowbarred an 80 gig out of my old desktop. Plenty of room.

And I can play the real Goldeneye on my box. Rogue Agent? Fuck that!

Having bought the PS2 at launch I don't know that it's the best idea. It's when it's most expensive and glitchy. I've heard the same from folks who bought thier PSOnes at launch. (I didn't buy my PSOne until Gran Turismo came out, then it became a matter of need...)

The box mod is easy. PS2 is hard. XBox has a readymade slot, initially intended for developers. With PS2, you have to solder onto seemingly random spots on the board.

But yeah. I can't Live. But who cares? I can play Golden Axe 2 and Captain Commando!

EDIT: xecuter also has a solder-free install that uses a screw-in pin header and tape. It isn't so good if you're going to be lugging the box around, but if it lives on your shelf, it's plenty solid.

XBox! Its seems PS2 is more geared towards kids and XBox is more for adults. I mean yes PS2 has adult geared games, but..........We actually blew something on our XBox and had it fixed, then yikes, electrical blow on our house and bought another XBox.....had nothing to do with the XBox. Most of Xbox games are more adult rated. Oh and Halo and Ghost Recon are great for guys on XBox.
