Started playing guitar when I was eight(I'm 37) so I grew up on Classic Rock. After high school, I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, which opened me up to the jazz scene. So I guess my fav style would be a rock/jazz/fusion sort of thing.

Favorite Bands/Artists: Jane's Addiction, King's X, Primus, Phish, Steps Ahead, The Yellowjackets, Budgie, Fishbone, Steely Dan, Rage Against the Machine, Allman Bros., Pink Floyd, Living Colour, Dread Zeppelin, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Michael Brecker, Concrete Blonde . . . Mostly, i listen to whatever i like.
Artists in bold are ons i feel are paticularly important

Artists currently in my cd folder:
DreamTheater, Pitchshifter, Incubus, Silverchair, Muse, Alanis Morissette, 1st Matrix soundtrack, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tori Amos, Metallica, 1st Shrek soundtrack, Audioslave, Iron Maiden and The Rocky Horror Show.

Other artists that spring to mind:
Radiohead, Sheryl Crow, Live, Union Underground, Cypress Hill, Maroon 5, Insane Clown Posse, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin, oh the list goes on and on... yeah i think i'll just write etc.

However, i'm doing music a levels, and i've done Associated Board Jazz piano, so now all my piano compositions have a jazz feel to the harmonies. As a result, i'm under orders to listen to classical music more, and while i don't seem to enjoy it as much as my other music, i can still apprieciate it as fine music. I can't say the same of most pop / dance music i've heard. Sweeping generalisation tho, i do apologize. :D

Emo is what's keeping Punk (Though it's barely a Punk subgenre) going. It's balancing out the sell outs and the crap pop punk bands.

Personally, I think some punk and hardcore music is ok, I admit I like Anti Flag, and some Canadian punk bands, and a lot of bands with hardcore or post hardcore elements, but the lack of any real emotion in punk and the whole machismo element in hardcore gets annoying after a while.

Yeah, most Punk Rock lacks anything close to emotion, which is sad, since it was originally an emotional musical movement.

And hardcore does get fucking annoying. "Look at us, we can play really fast and growl and scream about nothing!".

The Damned had a few songs that meant absolutely nothing. New Rose is the first one that comes to my mind.

But when the Ramones wrote songs that meant something, they were beautiful. I'm talking about "Poison Heart", "It's Gonna Be Alright", "Strength To Endure", and "Censorshit". Mondo Bizarro was one hell of an album... It's too bad that they only released two more, plus a final live recording. They were getting great again.

Bah, I didn't read that part!

Well, whatever you do, don't get the CD reissues. The first reissue from the 90's is a basic reissue, meaning that it has very shitty sound. The Digitally Remastered version from 2002 is even worse. It's *much* slower than the first reissue (which was slower than the Vinyl version, because it's on a CD, which doesn't have a true pitch/tone like a Record), and it has very crappy lows and highs. The percussion on the 2002 Reissue tends to break... A lot.

not gonna go into the huge array of bands that i like to listen to, basically almost anything between Michelle Branch through Lamb of God i'll listen to though i must take this opportunity to name the one band who particularly pisses me off: Dashboard Confessional. yea, lemme whine a bit more into the mic. anyways, i particularly enjoy Metallica (except St Anger, yuck), and those 3 grown up kids from SoCal, Green Day (they might be the biggest band of the 90's-00's era, like the Beatles were of the 60s, Zeppelin for 70's, and i spose Metallica of 80's-early 90's). My DK cd reissues are almost comparable quality to the vinyl versions, which I don't actually have, but routinely listen to them in my university library...mind you, not exactly the same, but the CD reissues are by no means terrible.

Yeah, the first reissue was pretty good, though not close to the original Vinyl. I guess I jumped the gun on that one... But I'm still right about the 2002 Reissue. It sounds very bad, and is *very* slow.

Jello sounds like he took some sedatives... That's how slow it is!
I looked at my albums...and while I can't find a manufacturing date, they're made in Australia by Shock Records. I'm guessing that the quality must differ...

Yeah, that's probably what it is. Do your reissues have the same speed and pitch as the original Vinyl release? If so, that means the label digitally transposed them to correct the imbalance inherant in Digital recording.

I was actually very surprised when I heard the CD version of Bedtime For Democracy a few weeks ago - it had a much better sound than the excessively tiny vinyl version I have, but then the vinyl was produced at the height of the whole PMRC shenanigans, so maybe they were scrimping on pressing quality at that point.

Funk Jazz-Sex Mob*, Medeski Martin and Wood, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (I realise they are a second line band, but they also funk-ay), Garage a Trios

Fusion-Mahavishnu Orchestra, Headhunters, Miles Davis (early over later)

Third Stream-Gil Evans (duh), Uri Caine

Legends-Dizzy Gillespie (alright, I just wanted to mention that...), Count Basie (with Lester Young-Pres!), the usual cannon...

I dig the jazz-

....... Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie, and SUN RA!!!!!!
Music just doesn't get better than those three. I once saw Bowie, the Art Ensemble and the Chicago Gospel Band (was that their name? Probably not) live. I don't think my brain has ever been so alive as for that hour and a half.

..... The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (I realise they are a second line band, but they also funk-ay), .....
Did you hear the Phil Alvin album that featured the Dirty Dozens with Sun Ra? Very fine.

.... Pink Floyd .....
In the interests of maintaining my respect for your musical taste, I'll assume you meant Barrett-era Floyd only.

Man, when I saw them they didn't even have Waters...Certainly there is a scale Barrett>Waters>>>Gilmore. I honestly believe they work better together. But it they peal back from phenominal it really only makes them fall to fuckin' good to 'Yeah, I'll go." That is to say the whole is so incredible that the parts outweigh most, which allows me to enjoy all itterations (that being said, I ain't buyin' Division Bell anytime soon.) I dunno, I used to like them heaps back in the day, but now I find them unlistenable, largely because they really should have hired a singer to replace Syd Barrett. Plus there's this oddity that Gilmore was obviously always recorded at the wrong speed. If you listen to his stuff at 45rpm instead of the recommended 33, he's actually quite a reasonable blues guitar player. Odd that they never spotted the error.

But yeah, early Floyd and Barrett's solo albums = prodiguously awesome.

The only part I would disagree on is that I actually liked the policy of finding the best person for the part, and that the singer wasn't always even part of the band. That sort of 'art above ego' (hard to say that really, with Waters there, but you know what I'm getting at) approach that I kinda respect. Never knew that about Gilmore. I like his playing, though. Not so much his lyric writing, or song writing while not dealing with someone else.

Although I have seen SOME mention of the pioneers of rock i.e. Zep, Doors,Dan,Clapton,et al.....IMHO, there is much lacking in today's "rock"(I fault the "corporate" radio station industry for this as much today, as I did many years ago!)The exposure of musical virtousity has, unfortunately, given way to what amounts to nothing much more than rehashed drivel!
I've seen Dream Theater mentioned here a few times, and I am saddened that they have been placed in the (merchandising) category that they have been....They are TODAY'S virtuosos, but alas....no airplay or exposure to the general music-listening population! They walk in the footsteps, with giant leaps forward to their predecessors! Groups of the ilk- ELP, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull,Yes, King Crimson, and those who can not only create the music for distribution, but present it with excitement and ALL the precision live...not only being an inspiration to us musically, but culturally, as well!

I envy you ... I used to have that sort of thing going on all the time. I blame my current lack of musical synchronicity on my kids disrupting my natural rythms. Not the relative quantities of drugs being consumed then and now. Nope, not that, that couldn't be doing it. That would mean drugs could have been messing with my perceptions of reality, and that would be silly.

Anywho, it's a glorious spring day over here, so my kids and I are off to the local park to chase some deer. Catch you later.
