No single favorite. Karekano (his and hers circumstances) is the god of relationship animes, Cowboy Bebop is the best production value in an anime I have ever seen, Trigun perhaps is the best combination of philosophy and anime I have seen in a while. FLCL, underneath its manic face lies a complex but exceedingly well told story, with amazing direction and camera work, the story tells itself in unusual ways. Ghost in the Shell pushes the boundries between a standard police story and a cyberpunk investigation of trancending humanity through computers.

But anime, like life, is a collection of induvidual moments and scenes. Perhaps one of the more touching scenes I have seen came from Rah Xephon; where the hero swears to protect someone, only to kill her on accident in that very next battle, she knows what will happen and accepts it even as the end comes. It was exceedingly effective as a scene, my guts felt twisted inside my body; I empathized with the character beyond what I normally would.

I watch anime as much for those moments (some happier and more friendly than the one listed here ;) ) as for the entire series. Because of that I cannot find one series that encapsulates the entirety of human emotion and experience.

Some of my favorites I would recommend to all

Long series - Naruto, One Piece

Short series - Berserk*, azumanga Diaoh, Mahoromatic, Vandread, Read or Die (OST), Golden Boy, Stellvia of the Universe, Gundam Seed, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, Initial D

Some good series but the ending totally screws up the seires, makes you go WTF?!?!?! and screws up your perception of the show. - Last Exile, Mahoromatic, Vandread, Hellsing, Scrapped Princess, Noir, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Gunparade March

Movie - Hoshi No Koe (The voices from a distant star)

Has anyone seen Naruto?

I'm new to the Anime scene and I kind of want to see where I fall on the scale.

Excellent anime. Although the anime is kinda slow and draggy towards the fighting scenes.. But if you can stand through all that, Naruto has a very very rich world full of history, with each individual has their own story to tell.

And as you progress through it, it gets better and better. Right now in Japan it's episode 126. And honestly, the series might only be 1/4 way through.

Oh my god! I neglected "Karekano"!!! Yes - truly great.

Yeah, it seems few people know about it in comparison to other anime; perhaps it slipped under the radar? It didn't have very flashy animation or anything, and sometimes the constant recapping got old (VERY low budget at times I understand) but the story and characters just shined through all of it.

I stand by my statment: God of Relationship anime. :)

Isn't every sixth episode a review of the story so far, or something?

Personally - I loved it. Not just in terms of 'relationship' anime, but also in terms of just general anime... it's one of the most well-observed, most 'genuine' and certainly one of the most amusing, anime out there.

Might be worth checking out "Boys Over Flowers" (as it is called in the US), or "Hana Yori Dango" (which was the version I saw it as...), if you like Karekano.

Also - have you seen "Love Hina"?

More than that actually, watching it a few months ago I discovered that the recaps are proportional to their buget woes. For example, a full half of each of the "14 days" episodes are recaps until the final three eps. There are entire episodes that are recap episodes, and sometimes the recaps at the begining take up 5 to 10 minutes. Its kinda scary, looking back at it.

I loved it as well; though I think of it mostly as a "relationship" anime because it reminded me so completely of my own first relationship. Its fun watching parts of your own life played out in SD form ;)

I'll have to jump on the band wagon and say Trigun and Bebop as well. And I'll have to give Flame of Recca and Irresponsible Captian Taylor honourable mentions as well.
However, there is one show that splits my sides like a drunk, axe wielding redneck: the one with Guu in it.
Those who know which anime I'm refering to will recognize the name, but for those who don't: the title of said anime is so long and hard to spell, I'm not even going to bother

Until I saw Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Evangelion: Neon Genesis was my favorite. I hear that the second Ghost in the Shell series is even better.

I've started ranking animes by whether or not I remember what happened. Here's my list:

Remember: Evangelion, GitS, Scrapped Princess, FLCL, Trigun, Boogiepop Phantom

Don't: Last Exile (remember everything but the end), RahXephon, Texhnolyze, Lain (remember the end)

Haven't finished: Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop

Personally, though, I see in this conversation the reason why I'm no longer really into anime culture: most of the stuff mentioned has been teenage pop crap, with the exception perhaps of Eva, Koukako Kidokai: SAC and *possibly* Kare Kano. Hear me, hear me: there is anime made for intelligent, thinking adults, anime that is not simply genre fiction - but I had to *live in Japan* to find this out, because almost *none* of it is imported and translated; it's a slanderous practice, and makes me ashamed to buy Viz and ADV's products. Now, I'm not saying that I don't enjoy shows like Naruto and Fushigi Yuugi (as my large collection of romance manga will attest to), but I no more enjoy having to find sustenance entirely in popular teen shows than I would enjoy only being able to read genre fantasy and scifi novels. The stuff has its place, it's fun and a lot of it is well-made; when the most recent adult-oriented stuff I can find in most stores is along the lines of Akira and Galaxy Express 999, however.... ecch.

Mobile Suit Gundam - my favorite anime epic of all time. For those of you who have not seen MSG, 08th MS Team, or an alt. universe Gundam series like Gundam SEED you are sorely missing out. Oh, and Gundam SEED Destiny is coming to the US in the fall :)

I also like GitS, Trigun, Ruroni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

Patlabor 2 : The Movie

I love that film, the score is brilliant, the story is good (i don't mind the plot holes caus every film has them), i can associate with the characters and its has great relevance to todays society and politics, despite being made a fair while ago now.

Well, Production Value means more than just how expensive the animation itself looks. Its true that Akira has very high production value, but Cowboy bebop's very style and nature helped it raise the bar. For example; Cowboy Bebop took on different genre's with the same cast of characters from horror (Toys in the attic/Peirre la Fou) to straight comedy (Bohemian Rapsody, Stray Dog strut) to the more traditional action or comedy episodes.

The point is that the show took on numerous genre styles and methods and spliced its characters into it successfully, seemlessly even. Added to this was a diverse musical score that molded itself to each episode, enhancing the experience.

The consistently high quality of the show even as it did this means that their production team was very talented and skilled. This is what I mean by high production value: it spends its money wisely, and never dissappoints when taking on a new subject or genre. Arguments could be made about other shows being more suited to induvidual taste, or having greater impact on anime in their heyday sure, but the Bebop crew does the most with what they had.

For me my favorite is pretty much whicever one they're playing on TV at the moment because I'm not going to go out of my way to buy the DVD of seasons.
So with that said I'll say Inu-Yasha cause that's pretty much all that left not counting Dragonball GT and Gundam Seed. I'm sure I could be easily swayed if another were to come on TV.

Fansubs. They take a while to download, but they're better than the dubs you'll find on TV.

Besides that, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Cowboy Bebop are on television frequently. I've also seen parts of Trigun and FLCL on TV.
