Does God have a soul?

One for the theists here I guess. It seems a universal assumption amongst them that we as human beings have souls, but does God have one?

If god is not human then no. A soul is just the distinction between the mental and physical elements of a person or animal. If god is immortal, then he would not have one. I'm not saying god is immortal or human, I'm saying if that is your belief then this is what to be true.

I'm no theologist, but I assume He either has a soul or is a soul of some sort. I hope that helps.

I guess it depends on how you imagine the trinity... Jesus was 'alive' - so he had 'the breath of life'... which theoretically means Jesus had/has a 'soul'...

I think so. I know he has a body too I think.

Well, shit. God made James Brown, so this seems like a no-brainer.

The real question is, does God have the blues?
Does He have the funk?
I think yes.

It seems a universal assumption amongst [theists] that we as human beings have souls...Only amost the ones who don't actually understand the basis behind their religion.

You don't have a soul, you are a soul, who temporarily has a body.

Ergo, God would also be a soul, by merit of existing and being concious (not a lower animal).

Most humans perceive their primary mode of existence as physical while believing in another world of spirits. Because of this, they feel the need to premise another construct in order to bridge the gap between the physical world and the spiritual world. God's primary mode of existence is spiritual, so obviously there would be no need for such a construct in His case.

I'd have to respectfully disagree. Since God is pretty much an immortal being (which is a view that would likely be a supported by most religions), could it be that God was the ~first~ soul?

Mind you, this is a theory I just pulled out of my ass, so I have no real arguments to support it. Just something to think about...

Since i believe we are all souls who have a body (not the other way around) it would make sense to think that any deity is also a soul.

If you thought about as a cross between Buddhism and Christianity, then God is Soul.
Under Buddhism, our souls are merely vessels that contain our essence (think of it as a jar). Reaching enlightenment is breaking free of that jar and merging with the universe, which is Buddha.
Under Christianity, after death our souls go to reside with God.
But perhaps a better way to think about it, is that our souls become one with God, and the universe. So our souls are merely part of God already and are being allowed to return to their original source.

There, I've finished being theological now. I have a fever at the moment, which probably explains the above.

God is the collective soul of the Universe. Duh!

I don't think God has a soul by our standards, but something more...can't quite put my finger on it, y'know?

I can clearly say that I do not have a soul...

Umm... no. Jesus was an actual man. God was not. Remember? God is referred to as everyone's father in Christianity, including Jesus. However, Jesus didn't actually have a father God was his "father". God is something people cannot see and touch. Many may claim to see God but unless you can touch and see him he has no actual physical element. Without a physical element you are not a soul.
